Kevin's Back, The Veil Explained & Castiel's Accidental Army
The bunker is haunted, Dean is having a heart-to-heart with a coffee machine, and Kevin Tran has been stuck in the veil listening to a Winchester pity party.
This week Kevin makes his return from beyond the veil with a mission, a message, and absolutely no patience for the ongoing brother drama. Sam and Dean head into the woods to summon a ghost named Candy using a radio EVP setup, track down Mrs. Tran from a demon-run storage facility, and deliver what might be the most bittersweet reunion of the season. The impossible hug situation is heartbreaking.
Meanwhile Castiel pays a visit to Bartholomew's operation, which goes about as well as you'd expect, and somehow walks out of it with the beginnings of his own faction. He did not ask for this. Nobody asked for this.
The lore this week covers the veil, the real spiritual concept behind the one keeping all those post-fall souls stuck, and whether the veil has been thinning since 2020. Spoiler: one wellness blog thinks so. Berly and LA have thoughts.
Drop a comment with your theories, and if you're enjoying the show, a review helps other fans find their way to the bunker. See you next week. Jerk. Bitch.

Welcome to Denim Wrapped Nightmares, Tipsy Exchange podcast, where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.
LAOver drinks, we'll discuss the lore, the gore, and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.
BerlyI'm Burley, and I'm a new fan of the series.
LAI'm LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get tipsy. Hello, LA. Hello, Burley. On our last episode, it was titled The Purge. So on that one, Sam and Dean investigate uh recent murders where the victims were hundreds of pounds lighter after their deaths. I mean, we're talking shriveled. Shriveled.
BerlyThat one lady wasn't hundreds of pounds lighter. True. Oh well.
LASuspecting witches, the two go undercover at a fancy day spa that all the victims had attended for weight loss. While Sam is hired as a fitness instructor, Dean takes kitchen duty. After Dean swipes some tainted food and passes out, the guys realize someone is drugging the guests and literally sucking all of the fat out of them until they die.
BerlyI'm into fitting Sam. Wait, what's that joke? Like you you hey Sam, you into fitness? Fit in this. You want to fit in this? Yeah. Nailed it. Captives is the 14th episode of season nine and originally aired on February 25th, 2014. It was good to see Kevin, but also, oh poor baby Kevin.
LAWell, I'm like, so this is probably our last time to see him, right?
BerlyOne would think.
LASo I'm happy we got to see him again. I'm still sad about him. But I'm glad that ending was infuriating. Well, we'll get we'll get there. But yeah, I'm I was happy about him and his mom.
BerlySame. And she looked great. Oh my god, that haircut was like adorable. Perfect. That coat, that peak coat. Oh yes. I love it. I love it. So the episode opens up. We're in the middle letters bunker. The lights are flashing and we're kind of like moving through the bunker. And LA and I were both very confused. We were like, what the fuck is this? We thought it was worded against everything. What snuck into the bunker? I was like, nah, no.
LAMm-mm. This is not continuity. No. Right? But I we were wrong. Yes.
BerlyDean is just chilling on his bed listening to some rock music. I don't know if he's taking a nap or what he was doing, but he immediately opens his eyes as he realizes something has infiltrated his room.
LAYeah, didn't it like mess with his headphones? His sound.
BerlyYeah, the music. The music was messing up. The lights are flickering around. Honestly, I'm ashamed that we didn't figure out it was a ghost sooner. True. Yeah. We still figured it out quicker than them.
LAWell, I think though it was just that we were so confused that like anything is going on.
BerlyYeah, what's going on? Yeah, this is the safe space. We don't understand. Dean is screaming. Sam comes running out of his room. He's like, the fuck?
LAI like the first, like, he doesn't even like be like, hey, everyone, Sam! Sam. Even though they're beefing and he's super bitter, he still calls for his baby brother, first thing.
BerlySam goes running out of his room, frantic, goes to Dean's room. Dean's nowhere to be found. Goes running through into the library, the war room area, and we see the lights flickering and we see something kind of materializing behind Sam.
LAYeah, you saw it. You had to point it out to me because I didn't see it at first.
BerlyAnd that's when we were like, oh, it's a ghost. Which that was a good little effect. It was it looked cool. I liked it. I liked it. And we didn't really know exactly who it was at first either. You figured it out though. Before they did. Yeah. But yet again we did it before they did. So, but I loved this whenever Sam is like calling for Dean, trying to find Dean. And then he turns around just in time to see this entity coming at him, and then it gets shot with rock salt.
LAYeah.
BerlyFrom across the room. And Sam turns around. And Dean's like, Bunker's haunted.
LAYeah, that was good. That was good.
BerlyIt was a good cold open. Just like he's just like, yep. Sure enough, bunker's haunted.
LAWell, and it like it actually it ends and begins in the same way. The whole episode. What do you think about it?
BerlyKind of. I mean, it's Dean. Except for it starts with them coming together to resolve something and it ends with them.
LAYeah. Well, yeah. Well, I just mean that Dean on bed listening to music. Oh. Very different vibes.
BerlyRight. Yeah. Different vibes there, but same activity. Yeah. I think it was even the same song. Picked up. Yeah. Literally.
LAThey bookmarked it in a way.
BerlyYeah. So the boys are in the kitchen. LA was like, why do they keep working in the kitchen?
LAI mean, yeah, like with well, the on the last one when Dean was like up all night or whatever. So it's like, you're just chilling in the kitchen watching two movies on your laptop.
BerlyI said they just wanted to change the scenery. All right. I mean, I guess. They've only been in the library or the war room. And they figured out, like, we have tables in other rooms. Easy access to the food. Yeah. Booze. Let's change it up. Let's change it up. They're trying to figure out what could possibly be haunting the bunker.
LANothing can get in.
BerlyNothing can get in here. We're so confused.
LAI mean, it was a little ridiculous that they had to have this conversation.
BerlyIt was denial. It was total denial. You know, like, oh, is it an old men of letters person?
LAHas to be somebody that perished in here, but you know, it's been a little long for them.
BerlySomebody recently who could it be? I mean. So Sam is finally like, it's fucking Kevin. Okay. And Dean's like, no. And then the coffee machine goes, and Dean turns around and says, Kevin? And then one of the mugs shatter, and it was like, yeah, it's fucking Kevin. Who knew? Everybody. Everybody now.
LAEveryone but you.
BerlyEverybody. Well, in the meantime, we're at a funeral. And there is a gentleman. I thought he was a cutie patootie. He was. He was adorable. He had a bit of an Andrew Garfield vibe going with him. Good head of hair. Yeah. You know, more scruffy and more I don't want to say droopy, but like Ichabod Craney than Garfield. But I mean, he was he was cute, a cutie patootie. He's very sad at this funeral. And he's just like, oh, nodding his head, paying my respects. And then he turns around and Castell is like, motherfucker. Up in his face. What are you doing? His name is Elijah. And he was there to pay his respects to Rebecca. Well, Castell is like, fuck Rebecca. And then Elijah says, no, no, no, no. Rebecca was not friends with Metatron. Like they were besties up in heaven, but she hasn't talked to him since after the fall. She was like, This is bullshit. I don't like this political games and this fighting for power and all this stuff. It's stupid. I don't want to do it. I'm just going to live down here in harmony with humans. Who's with me? And Elijah was like, girl, me. And some others. Yeah, there were some others too. What they call themselves the Penitent.
LAYeah. Penitent man.
BerlyIt kept making me think of um Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, whenever uh after uh Sean Connery grandpa gets the stab wound. He's like, oh, or he gets shot and he's like telling Indiana, he's like, oh, the penitent man. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's what I kept. I love that. It's just such a good movie. That's what I kept thinking of whenever they were like, We're the penitents. I'm like, oh, Sean Connery. But they live humbly with humans. They're like, we can coexist. Okay? I can possess this vessel and chill. Just like Hottie McToddy that Gadrill took out a few episodes back.
LARight. Which it's nice to see a funeral for one of these vessels when it's been kind of up in the air. If they they live, they die, we don't know.
BerlyWhat happens to them? Like, we don't know.
LAIt's nice to see a funeral. I shouldn't say that.
BerlyWell, to see that like something happens afterwards. We just see them get killed and then we move on. So I agree. It's kind of nice to see. Okay. So what happens? Because like, we never know. Nope. And she apparently was a big deal. She was apparently fabulous. Yeah. But Elijah is like, you know who fucking killed her? Bartholomew. It's like, oh my god, we haven't heard that name in a while. Forgot about this guy. He's back. So Sam and Dean are back at the bunker and they are investigating. They got their EMF out trying to look for activity and trying to find out if Kevin is still trying to penetrate the veil. Dean is like really fixated on this coffee machine that was beeping at him earlier. Like having a whole heart to heart with the coffee machine. She's staring at it. And like sure enough, he's like talking about everything great that Kevin did and then turns it around to be like, now I gotta talk about me. But it's all on Kevin. It's all on me. It's my fault. It's me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me. And I loved Kevin coming into existence finally and being like, Are you fucking kidding me? Like, it's bad enough that I'm stuck in the veil, but now I have to be stuck here listening to a Winchester yet again. To Dean to Dean self-pity party. Like this is this sucks. This sucks. I died. I was like, that is fucking hilarious. Because literally, as Dean was lamenting and going on, I was like, Coursey makes it about him again. And so Kevin validated me a lot in this.
LAI sure did. I liked him, I did like the that when he was doing his little thing, and when he's like actually finally apologizing, has his hands over his eyes kind of like rubbing his head. That that's when he started to come in. Yeah. That's when the lights flickered and Dean didn't see it.
BerlyYeah.
LASo then Sam comes in and is like, Hey, did you see that? And Dean's like, What? And then that's when he comes in to say talk about the petty party thing. I was like, I liked that that Dean missed it.
BerlyYeah. Had no idea. Yeah. And then Sam and Dean are both just kind of standing there, and Kevin's like, Oh, can you can you see me? Can you hear me now? Whoopsie. Whoopsie. And he explains, like, yeah, with all this bullshit going on with heaven, it's closed. None of us, anybody who's died since the angels fell, we're stuck in the veil.
LAWhich when he as soon as he said that, I was like, Oh, well, that makes sense. Why haven't we thought of that before?
BerlyYeah. That's crazy. Yeah. You'd think they'd be doing ghost cases left and right. Yeah. Because yeah. Either they're in the veil or purgatory or what? What? Yeah, what's going on here? And so they're just like, dude, that sucks. And he's like, Yeah, I know. But you know what? You know what y'all can do to make it up to me? I met a girl. Oh, I met a girl. Her name is Candy. Candy. He's like, I got confirmation that my mom is alive. Crowley wasn't lying. So go find my mom. Go save her. And they were just like, oh my God, are you serious? And he's like, Yeah, you're gonna go to a forest and summon a ghost named Candy. When Castille is trying to leave the cemetery, all of a sudden, two angels like come up, like holding all these angel blades at him, like at his throat and everything. They're just like, Oh, yeah, Bartholomew's been looking for you. You're coming with us. And they disappear. Then we're back to Salmon Dean. They're in the forest looking for candy, just like Kevin asked them to do. They do a whole big setup to summon this ghost. I was like, I've never seen y'all have to do anything fancy. Yeah, you didn't have to do this for Kevin. You just talked to a coffee machine for like 30 minutes or something like that.
LAWas it like a circle of candles, a radio?
BerlyThe coffee maker was still there. Just in case. I think that he was literally convinced that that's what Kevin was attached to. But yeah, they do this whole big setup, and they're like, okay, this is a weird area to be in. And Sam was like, I'm more weirded out that we're summoning a ghost named Candy. I thought that was kind of cute. I did too. I did too. Well, it works. And I liked the radio thing. Like that was new. We haven't seen them do that before. That was really cool for to watch them get um, what do they call them? The EVP to use that for an EVP, an electronic voice phenomenon, and for Candy to be able to communicate to them.
LAI mean, they had a whole conversation, a big long one.
BerlyAnd we never found out who killed her. Oh, that's true. It looked like an angel blade, man. That's what she said, yeah. And what was really weird is that the demon at the end was all like, I couldn't kill anybody, I had to protect them.
LAWell, then who killed her? Who killed Candy? Well, but also like the you know the blade that they used? How it was curved up. It did kind of look like it curved up a little through her chest. Okay. But again, if he wasn't allowed to kill someone, yeah.
BerlyWho killed her? Yeah. I don't know. Maybe it was the dude that he killed to make a phone call. Maybe he was like a psycho killer on on like in his free time. He he didn't work for Crowley, so he didn't know the rules.
LAHe was just a kill somebody.
BerlyYeah, he was just a psycho. Okay. Let's go with that. It was the other, it was the other storage shed guy. So anyway, speaking of, Candy tells them, oh, we were in these boxes. Not actually boxes. There were vents, and there was the graded door, and they figured out like a what do you call it? Like a storage unit. Like a storage unit. And Candy's like, yeah, that's it. So then they figure out where in like a mile radius, because she explains how she ran, but she didn't run that far. So they're like, okay, so this is probably the radius we're looking at. And sure enough, there's a storage unit place within that vicinity.
LAI actually really liked the whole situ the whole little scene where she escapes and is running through the forest and whatnot with it being it was so dark, but like had such a greenish tent to it. It did look cool. I really liked that.
BerlyAnd I liked that because I thought it was a nice touch because the light that lit up in the radio when she talked was green. Oh my god. Look at that. Isn't that cute? Oh, see, that makes me like it even more now. So something important she did tell them that I forgot. Whenever she first got captured and was being tortured, Crawley was there with somebody else who she didn't know.
LAI love that she was like some British guy that really liked to hear himself talk.
BerlyKind of short. They knew exactly who were like, okay, we know who that is. Yeah. And I love that Dean has Crawley's phone number now. He's just like calling over and like, Crawley, I'm like, we need to come help us. Three uh three voicemails left. Sam was like, he's just not that into you. Let it go. That was funny too. But um she did say, you know, at one at some point, you know, suddenly that he it was just the other dude, like the short, the short guy with the sexy, beautiful voice, like disappeared. And I was laughing because I was like, because he was stuck in Sam and Dean's dungeon. So that's important that we know that there is this other mystery person who is holding these people captive. Castell is in Bartholomew's office, and Bart is just like, oh my god. Like I used to work under you, and I thought you were the shit, and then I thought you were crazy there for a little bit with that whole Raphael thing that was happening. But sure enough, your risk paid off, man. Like you you did good until you weren't doing so good anymore, you know. But I was just a grunt still, and fuck that noise. Cass was like, Yeah, you're not anymore, huh? And he was like, Yeah, I'm not anymore. And then Cass said, By the way, you're crazy. I heard about how you were torturing and killing people. And Bart was like, I was ordered to do that. We never found out who ordered him to do it either. Was it Naomi, I guess? I don't know.
LAI was real worried when they Bart Bartholomew and Cass came together to meet each other, like right there. I was like, are they what's what's gonna happen? Are they gonna try to kill each other? Are they gonna hug? Like, what's happening here? Because they It was like Bartholomew the way he played it, uh I I was really questioning it. He looked angry at first, like he was pissed about seeing Castile, but then all of a sudden, this big smile and they just like hug like they're old bros.
BerlyIt was weird, yeah. I was like, What? It was very, very weird. Like Bartholomew still hasn't figured out the whole human thing, clearly. Yeah, yeah. I thought he was kind of cute though. Yeah, he wasn't he he kind of looked like Brady Brady, but he wasn't as hot as Brady Brady. Well, and like you said, he had really pretty eyes. Oh, those were beautiful blue eyes. So pretty.
LAAlso, just like super clean-cut American-looking.
BerlyRight, like a kin doll.
LAYes, yes.
BerlyLet's hope he's not a kin doll where it matters, though. True. You know? So Sam and Dean go to the storage unit, and there's two dudes working there, and they figure out looking through the logs and looking at how there's a very specific row of only three units, and Candy told them it was three of them. They're just like, oh, okay. And they figure out, oh, it's Daniel, it's under Daniel Webster. Ha ha ha ha ha. Same guy's got them all. That's gotta be a Crowley joke. Fucking Webster dictionary. Okay, okay, Crowley. And then all of a sudden, one of the dudes is just like, oh yeah, Webster? Yeah, Webster. And that's when I was like, Oh, it's him. This little fucker. He his ears have perked up way too quickly. He's offering to be of more assistance way too quickly. It's this shithead. And sure enough, you were good though, because you said that immediately, and I was like, Okay, we'll see. We'll see. But sure enough, you were dead right. He was like, We got another unit, and especially whenever he was like, Oh, he has another unit on completely the other side of the building. I was like, Okay, he's splitting them up. Yep. Like it's all tactical. Yeah. So he takes Dean, and it took Dean way too long going through the shit in that room to be like, this isn't Crowley's unit. Like, what is this?
LAI also have to point out, I really liked their uh winter outfits. Remember? Like, um, gotta stop saying like Sam and his sweater vest. Sam looked like he was going to teach a class in college.
BerlyHe keeps doing little pops of color lately. You notice that with Sammy? I'm liking it.
LAI will say though, at the end, when Dean's sitting down, he had on plaid pants and a striped tie.
BerlyHe took a risk. But I still don't care. I don't care. Still looked good. I liked it.
LAAnd he had the little, he had his little sweater vest underneath had the like little.
BerlyDo we even remember what their what their aliases were, what they were claiming they were?
LABecause I was surprised you didn't realize it was Nyx and McVay.
BerlyWere they agents still, though? Yeah. When are they gonna do when are they gonna do something else? Oh, I know it's Fleetwood Mac. Oh, okay. I was like, wait, I'm just like, it's always agents now. It's always FBI agents. Like, what happened to them being like the repairmen and the sheriffs and I know because you like the uniforms. I want more, yeah.
LAWell, I liked this though.
BerlyI liked their outfits their winter outfits. They're winter, their winter wear. Yeah. They looked very good. And so the guy, like finally, Dean sees a stuffed unicorn or something like that before he goes, This isn't Crowley's unit.
LANo, it was some box with some other guy's name on it.
BerlyOh, you're right. It wasn't the stuffed animal. Yeah. The stuffed animal gave it away. The stuffed animal should have given away, is what I'm saying. But you are correct that after he saw the stuffed animal, he looked at a box and saw somebody else's name, and he's like, wait a minute. But you're right, he did pick up that weapon. I bet you that was the weapon that killed Candy. And then the demon dude came and like took him and threw him on the ground and like knocked him out with some sort of remember yeah, that baton? That was that baton thing. Okay. It wasn't like a long one, it was like a little one. Knocked him out. Sam, in the meantime, has found Linda and used his lockpick kit to get into her cell, but Demon Dude is has a camera in there and manages to lock them both in there. She's looking rough. She looks real beat up. Oh, she was screaming. Her screams, she should be in scary movies. Her screams were so good.
LAYeah, when it Candy was explaining, was it when Candy was talking? And then it was showing Miss Tran, and it was like, holy shit. Really good. She was terrified of whoever that was.
BerlyShe needs to be in scary movies. She could be a scream queen. Like she was eating it up. Loved Linda Tran in this. But yeah, so Sam gets in there, they get locked in there, he gets her out of her bonds, and they're figuring out how to get out while Dean is getting tortured. And LA and I are both getting a kick out of the fact that the little demon took his knife and like put it right against Dean's straw, strong jawbone.
LAAlso, he's like, I haven't been able to kill in so long. And so that when he does that and he's like thanking Dean for letting him do that, like he let him do it.
BerlyNo, he had to do it right there. Make sure he's like, in case y'all didn't notice this, let me highlight it right here. It's like we done been noticing. Oh, we know all about. Oh, he looks so good. Anyway, long story short, Sam gets and Linda figure out how to get out, which was really cute. Because Linda's who busted them out.
LARight. Well, I like that she Sam's over there at the little box where she told her to go and looking at the wires and Sam could look at my box. Oh, well and his little tool, like without saying a word, she just grabs the tool from Sam's hand very slowly and just kind of looks at him like you're a dumbass. And she starts going to town on the wires and and saying what she knows because she helps Kevin on his projects. Yeah. And then she was just saying that once they got out of there that they better take take her to her son.
BerlyAnd you could see that Sam felt so awful about it, but she was really motivated to get out of there in that moment. So whenever he like took her hand and stopped her, I was like, Stop it! No! Let her not yet get her somewhere safe. Get her somewhere safe first, then let her know. Why do you need to let her know now? But Sam he didn't even need to say a word. She just looked at his face and automatically knew.
LABut you know what? To her credit, she kept I mean, she kept her composure in finding out that her poor boy just died. Right. Or or had died.
BerlyWell, I mean, you have to think she's probably thought that that could potentially be something that's happened.
LAThat and adrenaline at the moment with Sam showing up, but still just Yeah, still being like you will take me to him.
BerlyYou will take me to him. Like whether if that's a grave, whatever, you will take me to my son. And she still got them out of there. She did. She sure as fuck did. And she took out the psychodemon too.
LAYeah.
BerlyKilled his ass. I loved it whenever he was like lamenting his love. And his job sucks, and I miss killing, but I'm gonna kill you. And Dean being like, Well, you can't kill me because me and Crowley are besties now. Yeah.
LAThick as thieves.
BerlyWe're real tight. Yeah.
LAWhen he uh murdered his coworker to make the call to Crowley, I was so confused, thinking, why are there two of him?
BerlyLike they did look an awful lot alike.
LAIt took me a good couple minutes to figure out that that was his coworker and not the same guy. And then I felt real dumb.
BerlyNo, they did look a lot alike. That's what I'm saying. The one that got his throat slit, he he must have been the little psycho murderer. Yeah, yeah. Because why was he back there anyway? You know? Why'd you go poking around in the other unit that your friend snuck off to with the hot dude? I would have assumed he wanted to be with that dude alone, you know? Uh yeah. Wouldn't we all? Right? Well, back at uh Buddy Boyle Ministries, Bartholomew is trying to convince Castell to join his side. Again, that it was very confusing with this conversation, what the point of it was.
LAYeah. I was I almost was gonna say when we were watching it, what's happening here? What why are we going back and forth between Castell and Bart and then the boys at Miss Tran?
BerlyIt was I just here's my theory is that they've just decided, oh shit, we gotta tie up this angel factions thing before the end of the season. Let's just start killing them all.
LAIt was just like a little discommobulated.
BerlyIt was just, yeah, I didn't understand what Bartholomew wanted. Like, like you were saying, like, do you hate Castell? And Castile, like, even had to ask, like, your people here want me dead. And Bartholomew was like, Well, I don't. I want you to join us, I want you to help us, and just going back and forth. And then they bring out poor Elijah Garfield and are like, Well, here he is. We're gonna test you, kill, kill him. And Cass was like, I don't want to. And they were like, Okay, well, we're gonna torture him. So they're torturing him, being like, Where's Rebecca? Where's the rest of the penitent men? And he's like, dude, you fucking killed us all. I'm literally the last one. I'm by myself. And Bart was just like, okay, well, Cass, finish him, finish him off, is what he said. And I was like, Oh, oh, why'd you choose to say it that way, Bart? That can be misinterpreted. Well, Cass doesn't want to do it, so Bart does it. And then there's very weird stuff where Cass is like, no, angels have to quit fighting. And it's gonna start with me, I'm not gonna fight you. So Bart is just like punching him and beating him up, and then Cass changes his mind and kills Bart. Yeah.
LAThere were a couple very strange moments, fighting moments in this one. Remember Sam? I forget when he when he punches the storage unit guy, it was just like his face in the O face, like the noise he made, and he threw like his whole body over sideways to like yeah. And then when Bartholomew Bar Bartholomew is punching Cass, and I was like, I understood, but at first I was like, Cass, you didn't see that coming? Right. You didn't want to like try to defend yourself, but then I understood because he wanted to stop the fighting. I mean, it was just but then when he had the blade against his neck and holding him, and the way he just really lazily tossed him on the ground just looked weird.
BerlyIt was like filler, is what it felt like. Yeah, yes. We need to wrap up this Bartholomew thing, even though we've been talking about him all season. Let's just like wrap it up real quick. Yeah. And we need it to fill out the rest of this episode. So I will say it was try to make it try to make it seem like it means something, but it it doesn't. But they did bring up Malachi, so I guess I guess we gotta see an episode. Yeah, we gotta see an episode where Malachi gets taken out next.
LAI will say it was a little bit of a nice reprieve from the constant brother melodrama these days, but it still didn't make sense and weird.
BerlyIt was just awkward. I wasn't I didn't really follow what was happening. Like he used to work for Castel, but then he was just a grunt, and now he's taken over here on earth, and just I want you to come work for what to to do what? Are you exactly? Are you trying to ask him to be the new leader when you were just bragging about how you were the leader? Like, I just what do you want, Bart? He just wanted to hang out with him a little bit before. Yeah, I guess so. He was like, Let's hang out and be friends. And Misha was like, I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel. And Bart was like, Well, we can't have that. Nope. So what happened to Rebecca? Jesus. Okay, so back at the bunker, they find Kevin and they're just like, guess what? We found your mom.
LAAnd she looks fabulous. She's a lower. Because after they got out, the first thing you said was, please get her a shower. Let her shower first.
BerlyLet her get cleaned up first.
LAAnd normally I I feel like that when I watch stuff like that, so it's funny that you said that. And yeah, she looked dirty. Man, walking in and out of the room.
BerlyShe cleaned up, she looked so good. Her hair looked so good. That the outfit was perfect on her. She looked fucking adorable. She sees Kevin and it's just like, oh my baby boy. And I felt so bad for her that she couldn't hug him. I know. Hang on.
LAThat's what kind of killed me was thinking like she's standing there after so long seeing her little baby, and she can't even touch him. She just can see him. That maybe. And talk to him, I guess, but still.
BerlyYeah. And I like that Sam and Kevin got to talk where Kevin straight up was like, dude, I know it wasn't you.
LAYeah.
BerlySo go kill that prick because fuck that guy. Yeah. Sam was like, okay, cool. And then as they're leaving, oh, first, first thing they do is they're like, okay, is there an object that's keeping Kevin here in the in the bunker in the veil? Yeah, they go through all this stuff. Yeah, with Linda with Linda. And she identifies a ring that she's like, this is the only thing that his dad left behind before we lost him or whatever. If he's attached to anything, it's this. And it works. Kevin is able to leave with her. But before he leaves, he has a message for Sam and Dean.
LAWell, remember Dean, though, before she left, kind of warned her, I know you want to take him with you. But they can get scary. Yeah, the longer he's in the veil, he may not be himself.
BerlyI do wonder if we're gonna have a follow-up where like they have to burn the ring or something.
LAI mean, listen, I'll be happy to see Kevin again. Not necessarily in a bad way, but like if he's gotten nutty from being here too long. Like Bobby started to get. But I mean, also you can't blame her for I mean, she's lost him. I'd take him home too and have a little time to chat and I would be moving into the bunker. Oh well, yeah.
BerlyI would have been like, where's my fucking rim, guys?
LAOoh, I didn't even think about that.
BerlyYeah.
LAWhat a dream.
BerlyI mean, I straight up told you, she's been MIA for a year. There's no way her hor her house didn't go under foreclosure. You did say that, yeah. Yeah. What are you going back to, Linda?
LAI don't know, but she's got Kevin with her.
BerlyYeah, she does. And you know what? That's probably enough for her right now.
LABut to what you were gonna say before Kevin takes off is like the best thing.
BerlyOh my god. Again, I feel so validated by Kevin Tran this episode. So Kevin stops and it's just like, before I go, real quick, just because y'all haven't been able to see me doesn't mean I haven't been seeing you. So do me a favor, stow your shit.
LAHe said get he said get over it, and in my notes, I I wrote, get over it and underlined it. Like he like he yelled it. He didn't, he said it very nicely, but for me, I was like, Yes, get over it.
BerlyHe was like the drama, the fighting. It's stupid. And I was like, yes, thank you, Kevin Trailer, like a slow, slow clap for Kevin. Like, oh my god, thank you, Kevin. Thank you, Kevin. Like literally, we were just saying in the last episode, we're so over it. Please move on. So we are celebrating. We celebrated too soon. We celebrated too soon. I mean, also as soon as he was out the door.
LAWell, no, he's he's like, You promise me, promise me that you guys will get over it. And Sam. Sam, yeah, who like should already feel guilty a little bit. I mean, he shouldn't feel guilty. It wasn't him that killed Kevin, but still. He's like, I promise. I promise. I promise, Kevin. Yeah. And then the second Kevin and and Miss Tran are up the stairs. Out the door. He literally just walks to his room and leaves sitting there.
BerlyAnd he pa he does pause at his bedroom for like a second where you could tell he was contemplating and then decides against it and goes into his bedroom and shuts the door. So of course, Dean's gonna say, fuck it too. Right. And so he spins on his heels and goes straight to his bedroom and slams the door and like ends like LA just said.
LAIn the beginning, it it ends with him laying on his bed, listening to music, except he looks a little angry.
BerlyRight. He's not in the good mood. Oh, and then something else that did happen before this ending is Cass goes to the cemetery to be like, Hey Rebecca, I know I was like calling you a bitch earlier and hating on you and stuff, but you know, I'm sorry.
LAWhich is kind of weird that he's at the grave of the vessel doing that.
BerlyI mean, who else are you gonna talk to? It's not like she's in heaven.
LAThat's true.
BerlyThey haven't told us what happens to the angels whenever they die. I don't know if they go back to heaven then.
LAOkay, alright.
BerlyI'm sorry. I'm sorry. I thought you were like a crazy like lunatic or something earlier. My bad. And then this angel who was in Bartholomew's office shows up and it's just like, oh my god, you're gonna be my new leader. And Cass was like, I don't want to be a leader.
LAHe's like, I really liked what you said yesterday before before you killed my boss. Right?
BerlyIf you'll have me, I will follow you. Cass was just like, um, and then he was like, wait, I'm not alone. And these two random people show up behind him, and Cass is just sitting there, like, the fuck? So we've got that whole thing going on now.
LAHe's like, okay.
BerlySo I guess there's a cat, there's gonna be a Castel faction now, I guess. So the Castillo faction is gonna have to fight the Malachi faction. Mm-hmm. Is what I'm thinking is gonna happen. I don't know. This episode was written by Robert Barens and directed by Jerry Wanick. Oh, Jerry. There wasn't any gore. I can't think of anything. Oh, wait. Dean's bloody sharp jawline. But that's the whole problem, is like we didn't even care that there was blood because it was just highlighting that jaw, that sharp his scruff. Oh, and at the end, whenever I wanted to be so mad at Sam and Dean, Jerry did give us that one angle where it was it was kind of a little bit low on Dean, on his face, and he was just like looking, and I was like, oh god damn, he looks good.
LAWell, there was also Elijah when he was being tortured. They were cutting him and he was bleeding. Just a little bit.
BerlyWe saw a little bit of his grace come through. Something something else that happened with the angel fight, right? Like, I won't even go into the angel fight stuff. I've talked, I've bitched about angel fights a lot and the lack of continuity. And like, is it a big deal or is it not? Because it seems like maybe it's not that big of a deal, and y'all didn't need to be all that worried about the apocalypse to begin with, maybe. I don't know. But I thought it was funny where it's like uh Bartholomew like loosened up his tie and undid his top button. I was like, what is that?
LATo have this fight with Castell. Punch Castellan. All right then. Yeah. Only the top button and loosen the tie just a little. Just a little.
BerlyI don't know why I got a kick out of that. Oh, same, same. Okay, did you adore anything about this episode?
LAOh, I mean Kevin and Miss Tran, obviously.
BerlyMrs. Tran, yeah. Agree, agree. You like and Dean's jaw and then Bartholomew with his tie. Yeah. Yeah. And Jerry got some interesting angles in here. There was there was some cool stuff that he did playing around with stuff. Um, like that one angle at the end of Dean's face, I was like, oh God, it's fucking gorgeous.
LAWell, and I was gonna say when I was talking about the whole scenario with uh Candy and her escape, it was like sepia but green toned. Yeah. Don't you think? Yeah. Yeah, that's what because I already I remember the green, but as we were talking about it more, I was like, oh, it was like sepia kinda.
BerlyYeah, like a like like a film over it or something.
LAYeah, like a mossy sepia.
BerlyMm-hmm.
LAI really liked it.
BerlyI liked that. I like when they play with colors. Me too. And they're doing that more, and thank God, because I don't feel like I feel like they must have been under a different timetable or a different budget by this point or something, because just they used to do so many more interesting angles. And I don't know if that's because Kim Manners passed away and his influence is gone, but it just feels like maybe they had to stick with stuff that was fast. You know what I mean?
LAOh, you know what? One angle I didn't point out in the last episode when he was getting in the car and it was the angles from like the passenger side floorboard, right, with him getting in the car. I was like, that's kind of interesting. I don't feel like that's like an angle you ever see in car shots. No necessarily.
BerlyNot usually.
LAUm, I liked that even though it was very squick.
BerlyWell, that's what I'm saying, is like there there's like one or two angles that'll like grab my eye now. And I feel like back in seasons four or five, oh, we talked about them way more. Yeah, I mean, there was like at least ten in most episodes that it was just like, oh, that was interesting. Oh, that was interesting. Yeah. And I don't think it's a lack of desire. So I'm thinking time, budget, something like that. Yeah. Where you can't get the cameras and the cool because that takes time to set that shit up, set those shot up.
LASo so one like cinematographer figuring it out and then sh actually shooting it.
BerlySo that'll be something for us to ask Brad. Brad Priester. We should we should get him on here soon. All right, we'll talk about that lore.
LAOkay, well, we were going to talk about Bartholomew today, but there was no overlap between the character and his biblical namesake, at least from what we could tell. And it's not like we spent much time with the character, so R.I.P. Bart, we're done with ya. We hardly knew ya. See ya, Bart. Peace out. So instead, we're gonna talk about the veil, the real-world spiritual concept. So, first up, what the veil actually means outside the show. In tons of spiritual and folk traditions, the veil is described as a kind of curtain separating our everyday world from spiritual or supernatural realms, where spirits, ancestors, and other entities exist just out of normal perception. It's less a specific place and more a boundary concept, like a frosted window that still lets light through, even when we can't see what's past it. And apparently that boundary gets thinner sometimes. Traditions point to things like Sam Hain. Sam Wayne. What? Right?
BerlyWe did we did a whole episode. Remember Sam Wayne? Sam Wayne? I thought it was like with a yeah. I think.
LAOkay. It's been a while. Yeah. We've done a lot of lore. Okay. Sam, Sam Wayne, Beltane, and The Day of the Dead, and All Souls Day as moments when the veil is at its most permeable, making it easier to sense or communicate with spirits. Liminal physical spaces, crossroads, doorways, the edge of a forest.
BerlyThe back rooms. Oh.
LAAre also considered naturally thin veil zones. The veil's been having a whole thing lately. One spiritual wellness blog claims the veil has generally been thinning since around 2020. COVID. Right.
BerlyIt affected everything.
LAMaking it easier for empaths, psychics, and sensitive souls to feel spiritual activity. Signs you're picking up on it, according to that framework, acting on hunches with no logical explanation, all the time for me, suddenly clocking other people's heavy energy.
BerlyOh, that's me this year.
LAI'm probably putting some of that out. Desires showing up in your life fast. I wish. And generally noticing more signs and synchronicities everywhere you look. Basically, the spiritual equivalent of your phone battery draining faster for unknown reasons. It's the phone company. So have you ever seen a stage actor get wrapped up in the curtains? Unable to truly get to either side? Well, that's where we imagine Kevin and these poor souls to be. Lingering on the mortal plane just past ordinary perception and occasionally reaching across into the spotlight. Until the boys fix this Metatron heaven mess, our poor sweet advanced placement prophet is stuck doing extra credit from behind the grave.
BerlyQuote to close it out, it was Kevin talking to Sam and Dean when he was telling them to stow their shit. He said, It's stupid. Cheers. Cheers.
