Pishtacos, Pudding & the Monster Who Was Actually Doing Good

This week Sam and Dean go undercover at Canyon Valley, a suspiciously effective weight loss retreat run by the sweetest monster they've ever had to shut down. Sam teaches yoga in a tank top. Dean gets assigned to the kitchen, steals some pudding, and sneaks away to eat it in a basement corner like a raccoon. Sheriff Donna Hanscom shows up on vacation and immediately becomes Berly and LA's new favorite character. The real villain turns out to be a very hungry, very disgruntled brother with a grudge and a body count.

Also: the debate about whether to kill monsters who are living their best non-murderous lives comes up, again, and Berly has some feelings about how many times this show is going to make them have this exact conversation.

The lore this week covers the real Andean legend behind the Pishtaco, which turns out to be rooted in genuinely horrifying colonial history.

Hello, LA. Hey Burley. Before we get into today's episode, a couple of quick announcements. Firstly, I made a comment on our episode Firstborn, the 11th episode of season nine, when we were Googling Timothy Omenson pictures. That there were some pictures where he didn't look so good. I had a lot of people message me that he had had a stroke and that those must be the pictures we were talking about. Oh no. Y'all, those were not the pictures. We were just talking about beard or no beard. I did some more Googling. The pictures I was talking about were Psyche. Like I wouldn't want Timothy Omenson from Psyche to kick in my door and come get me. That was it, guys. So apologies to anyone who thought that that commentary was about that. It it was literally just we prefer the beard. Another update. We have a social media update. We are no longer on blue sky. Uh it was asking because we're in Texas, it was asking for a picture of a driver's license, and just that's just too much for me. So I've deleted the blue sky. So denim wrapped is on Patreon, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Threads while we're at it. Last episode was titled Sharp Teeth. And Garth is back. He killed a cow, got hit by a car. And uh that was all in the cold open. Right. After six months of being AWOL, he admits that he got bit on a hunt, fell in love with a werewolf named Bess, and joined a peaceful werewolf congregation run by a sincere reverend and his too good to be true wife. Dean goes undercover at Bible study while Sam works the case in separate cars because things between the brothers are still very much not okay. Wifey, it turns out, has been running a cult inside the church and has a very different vision for how werewolves and humans should coexist. Meanwhile, Dean wants to move past their latest spat, but Sam's not having it.

Uh uh. That brings us to today's episode, The Purge. It was the 13th episode of season nine and originally aired on February 4th, 2014. We open up at a hot dog eating competition in Minnesota. It was gross. But there's a gentleman named Wayne McNutt who gets declared the winner, even though he fucking cheated. And the other guy, his competitor, is like calling him out, like he cheated. He's got a hot dog in his pocket. And he was like, That's not a hot dog, that's my penis. He's like, I hate to break it to you. That's not a hot dog. And we were just like, hate him immediately. Like, don't like this guy. He he seems like an asshole. But still, I wouldn't have wished upon him what happened. My God.

No, it's also really gross that he ate the hot dog from his back pocket when he got in the car later.

Don't judge, okay? Because I remember us drinking too much and ordering Jack in the Box delivery one night and me passing out on the couch with an egg roll in my hand. And I distinctly wait remember waking up and the egg roll was still in my hand. And it was like right there in my face. And so I ate it. I went ahead and ate it.

That's okay. It was just in your hand. He had it in his back freaking pocket.

What are you thinking's in his back pocket that's in the middle of the room? Like he sat on it? Hot. It still looked good to me. No, no. He didn't lock his doors and start his car as soon as he got in there. Like, hello. Girl training.

Let me sit in my car with it not on and eat this nasty hot dog.

Eat my pocket dog. And we see this figure sit up in his back seat, and then we couldn't tell what was happening to him, but then he just started deflating. And it was like, ugh. The special effects on the deflating stuff was really good, in my opinion. Yeah. It was very cool watching him deflate, like very Stephen King thinner. And with the young woman that we see in the gym later after this, getting Stephen King thinner, like very cool. So Sam and Dean, they're at the bunker. And y'all, today is the season of the consistent scruff on Dean.

I mean, I've been noticing it every episode.

Oh, I thought maybe it was like something fans talk about.

I mean, I've had some comments on our last episode because we talked about the scruff, but I don't know if it's an ongoing fandom conversation that Dean is scruffy this season. Oh, okay. And then Sam has the perfect five o'clock shadow in every episode. I'm digging it. Well, Dean's not sleeping. And he says it's because good TV was on. Like, what'd he say? Rudy and Unforgiven just got him so wired up that he just stayed up all night researching. And you know what? I've stayed up all night because of something.

But Rudy and Unforgiven, I don't see that being what does it for me. True. Sam seems completely unconcerned by this. Which also red flag. Like, really? But okay. Dean explains. You know what? Good news though, I found a case. So I'm not mad about you saying we're not brothers. Not at all. No. I'm not going to bring up that up repeatedly during this episode at all, Sam. I'm not mad about that. So that's not about this. I'm going to go take a horse bath and then we're going to work this case. In Minnesota, they meet Sheriff Donna Hansgum, played by the adorable Brianna Buckmaster. We've seen Brianna at conventions and we've been waiting to finally meet her character. And oh my god, she's so fucking cute. I love her. She's explaining to the gentleman, the whole eating competition culture in Minnesota, that it's a really big fucking deal here. Explaining that they've eliminated Wayne's competitor in the competition, that he had a whole bunch of witnesses, that the coroner is saying it was like heart failure. And she's like, but literally, like there was multiple organ shutdowns. Fucking got like a hundred pounds sucked off of him.

Like yeah, it sounded awful.

Yeah. We know this is not the gig. Like, we know something weird is going on here. And the scene with the donuts.

When Dean had it all over his face, and Sam like tried to warn him and he just dabbed the side of his mouth. It was just a little bit.

Well, and her too. She's like eating and it's all around her mouth.

All around her mouth, all over her tie, her black tie had little sprinkles of sugar on it. That's the thing with those donuts, too, though, man. They they're good, but damn they're messy. Oh yeah. Damn they are messy. But her introduction was adorable. I really liked her. Um, I know we'll get to see her again in the future, and I'm looking forward to it. So they go check out the competitors house. I don't remember what his name is. I don't either.

And I kept in my notes, I was like, wait, his girl's name is Mala.

Not that much. They go to Mala's husband's house. Oh, Slim Jim. That's all I know of him. Oh, Slim Jim. They go to Slim Jim's house and he's eating lettuce and is like, oh, it stretches the stomach. And Dean was like, Oh, that's another reason why I'll never eat lettuce. And I was like, wait till you hear about the explosive diarrhea, Dean. So he explains uh that he didn't do shit. The guy was an asshole, but of course he didn't like want to kill him. Like he's like, I wanted to beat him in the competition. I think he's a dick, but that's it. Then Sam is kind of looking around and he sees pictures of Slim Jim's wife, and he's like, Oh, you know, where where is she from? And and what were they calling her? Romania?

Yeah, she had like little uh there was like a shelf and she had some of her little Tchotchkeys, yeah.

Yeah. So they determined she's from Romania, and because Sam immediately gets suspicious and is like, Oh, well, I need to go look in your bathroom. And the guy was like, Well, don't go to this toilet. And Sam was like, you know what? That's exactly the bathroom that I'm gonna go to. Where his wife is showering. Yeah, I'm gonna go to where your wife is showering and poke around in your bedroom. Sam finds a little hex bag up there while Dean and Slim Jim are talking about shoving hot dogs in your face. They go back to their hotel room and determine, yep, this is a pussy.

This is isn't that what they this is a pussy. Putsy. This is a putsy. It's essentially a Roman hex bag. This this bitch is a witch. And they were using the G word an awful lot, and I was just like, oh, oh yeah. Like, isn't that a derogatory term? We're not supposed to say that anymore.

He was gonna win the competition and they were gonna run away together and go get married in Orlando. I was like, Orlando? Why?

Sometimes it's nice. So, you know, no, don't knock it till you try try it. But Mala, Wayne seemed like a real asshole. Like Slim Jin was not right about that. So I still questionable. Questionable. But anyway, so they're back at square zero. Square one? Yeah, that's the saying. They're back at square one. They don't they don't know what's going on here. Like there's no connection between the random woman who was trying to work out to lose weight. She's not connected to Mala and Slim Jin at all. She's not an eating competitor. So whatever. Somebody should really teach her how weight loss works, though. Right. I felt so bad for her when she was like, oh no, I can't wait. And I'm like, no, that's good. It's muscle. That's a good thing. The other stuff will come. Stick to it. Stick to it.

Well now we know it was his throat, his throat snake. Remember the throat snakes that came out? Well, yeah, but so that just went un underneath her clothes? He was being sexy with it. Yikes. He like laid down next to her and let his throat snake go under her clothes and up to find a really good spot and then Okay. He was that was a cool effect though when she deflated.

That was a nice touch. Corny as hell, but a nice touch. Like that was totally could see that being in a horror movie, you know? Like really good, really good touch there. So Sam and Dean were like, well, fuck. Okay, let's go, let's go investigate this place too. And they can't figure it out. No connection. What's going on? And then whenever they lifted up her shirt and Sam was like, is that a birthmark? Did that fucking look like a birthmark? I mean, it looks, I was like, I would have been like, is this a burn? Like a brand? An infection? Like, what is going on? Not a birthmark. Not a birthmark, Sam. You're oh for two here, okay? Damn. And then they see the hot trainer come in. So of course we have to argue over who gets to stay here and talk to the hot girl. And Dean wins because apparently Sam is just weird with girls. Fair. Go to the Morgue. Yeah, go to the Morgue Sam. See if you can find another birthmark on Wayne's body. Well, while Dean is talking to the trainer, she turns around and she's got a birthmark too. So he finally talks to her and finds out about Canyon Valley, a wellness spa. And apparently the woman who had been working out, she had been there too. And the trainer had been there. They all have these little spots. So it's like time to infiltrate, time to go undercover. The interview scene was so funny. Like Dean was so proud of her.

For themselves or their uh the jobs at the place. Yeah. Which I want to say, the Canyon, I would love to go to Canyon Valley.

That sounded like a wonderful business plan. I was really disappointed at the end of the episode when they made her go back to Peru. I'm like, excuse me? She's doing good work. Despite his enthusiasm, Dean does not get the trainer position.

Why? What was that? Like he was sitting there and he got so gung-ho about something. He likes making people healthy.

He likes working them out.

So weird. But then the the the husband did his weird thing too. I was like, these guys are a little too excited.

Calm down. But we are talking to, oh gosh, what's her name? Maritza. Maritza and her husband Larry. They are who run Canyon Valley. And they're they're cute. We find out later. Yeah, we find out later. Larry's a bit of a dick. Um, but you know, he seemed to really care about his wife. Well, and she was a sweetheart. Yeah, and she was adorable. I I liked her a lot. Yeah. Um, but yeah, it was really funny. Sam got the trainer position and has to go teach yoga, and they gave Dean a position in the kitchen. Hair net and all.

Sam's comment about like, I thought you'd be psyched to be around all this food all the time. And Dean's just like, it's health food, man. Like, there's no burgers and shit. This sucks. Well, it turns out adorable Donna Hanscom is also at Canyon Valley. She is here on vacation doing a little wellness retreat. They take her into a room to go get cupping done. It was just, it looked like meat, like what is it? Raw meat, like hamburger meat, where they had in the cupping thing. I was like, it doesn't get that red. Right. We even Google the pictures. Well, whatever. Maybe they had like they didn't have enough time to get the coloring right. It was close enough. Close enough. It was a little distracting though. It was. And then we see Maritza's throat snake come out and her eyes like roll back in her head. I'm like, close your eyes. It shows it go on Donna, and we can like see the chunks of fat going up through the throat snake.

And Sheriff Donna out cold.

Oh yeah, she she fell asleep. She laid down and Maritza's like, it's the lavender.

Even before she put the first cup on, I think she was out. Yeah.

Well, in the yoga studio, Sam is noticing everybody's got the birthmark. And he's just like very confused. Which okay.

When he's going around to each person and that guy lifting up their shirt. Yeah, I was like, I would be like, what the fuck are you doing?

Hey, I think we've established Sam was not on his game in this episode, okay?

LA 16:40

Yeah, but I just I I totally expected that guy to be like, Can what are you doing? He looked good in a tank top, so they just let him. He looked good.

I say I'd that I'd be like, what are you doing? But I'd be more like, what are you doing?

His hair is all silky and smooth. I would have been like, oh, adjust me. Adjust me, Mr. Winchester. Did my shirt slip up? Did my pants fall down? Uh-oh. Downward facing dog for five minutes, you don't say. Oh, that was funny. Everybody's face was like, Jesus. Well, in the kitchen, Dean discovers the pudding. And he's disgusting. He took the serving spoon that he's using to make the little servings of pudding that are gonna go to people and licked it. And then was like, oh yeah, this is good. And took one of the to-go puddings and put it in his pocket, and then took the serving spoon and stuck it back in the pudding. And so I was like, that is not sanitary.

I wasn't that surprised that he would do something like that, you know? Like gross, but I, you know, double dipping.

So he sneaks off and eats the pudding, and it like knocks him the fuck out.

Also goes all the way down to where he went. Like underneath in the basement in one of these random rooms.

To go eat the pudding. Like a little he didn't want to get caught. Like a trash pan to run around there and then hiding his food.

He calls Sam and Sam's like, Where are you? And he's like, Sweet potato. He's the position of his body looked very uncomfortable. I mean, he nailed it whenever like he was done because he was standing, and the way he like started kind of swaying and was like, Oh, I felt I thought he did great. He did. I thought he did great. Before Sam gets his call from Dean, he runs into Donna in the hall and she's like, uh, Agent Fee. And he's like, Whoa, she's really out of it, huh? Just like takes off. Well, unfortunately, Larry is pushing Donna in the wheelchair, and this makes him suspicious. He's like, uh, she might be out of it, but she's not that out of it. Like, I don't know, hot guy, hot yoga guy who clearly didn't know what he was doing in the yoga class. Something, something ain't adding up. Sam goes to find Dean and Larry digs around, finds out about the hot dog eating contestant dying and all this other kind of stuff, and goes and gets Maritza and is just like, hey, so there's two hunters who were here. I went and broke into their car. Yeah.

But he pulled out the box and just from the glove compartment.

I was like, Well, like that. Wow, okay. He really wanted to find out.

Confirmation, right? He wanted to confirm before he accused, but he definitely got confirmation. He was like, they're hunters, and look at this. And Maritza's like, oh fuck. So we're like, okay, so it's not them. So who is it? It's the angry little shit working in the kitchen with Dean. Yeah. Maritza's brother. So that's the end of the episode.

Which I mean, I can't kind of can't blame him for being a little disgruntled.

Well, I mean, he almost killed one of their clients.

Well, and then here's my question. She was like, oh, he only got fat from the jars. There were a lot of jars, Alonzo. Like, was she telling you you could only have one jar a day? How are they? How are they really depriving you? Number one. Number two, where did they get all the fat in the jars from the fridge?

Yeah, I don't know, but it was disgusting.

Like they said they don't do surgery here, so it's not lipo.

Maybe they suck it and that's I don't know.

They suck it and regurgitate it into the jars. I don't know. Anyway, but Alonzo almost killed a patient, a client, on the table. So he got sent to the kitchen and he was just like, Y'all are starving me. Y'all are starving me. So I started murdering. And Larry's just like, oh well, your sister doesn't even fucking like you. You're terrible, you're a terrible person. She wants you out of here. Like she's we're gonna give you up to the hunters. Fuck you, Alonzo. And Alonzo is just like, okay, I'm gonna just kill you then. Yeah. And then he goes on a murdering spree. He kills Larry. He kills the chef. He's just like murdering away. I'm like, damn, Alonzo. If you're so hungry though, go eat a Snickers.

You didn't eat them. You just killed them. Right. What a waste. Man, that fight with him and Sam though.

But that was Sam being like, I really want to do Walker, Texas Ranger, one day. So let me show everyone my Chuck Norris karate skills. Yeah. Hiya.

Well, I'm getting ahead of myself. Dean and Sam go and talk to Donna and let her know they're there undercover, that there are some ties between the spa place and the victims. And she was like, like what? And they were like, the birthmarks, duh. And she was like, oh, like these, and showed them our back. And they were like, where'd you get those? What is it? And she told them the cupping treatment. Like, this is where you go for that. So they go to check out that room. And when they walk. In Maritza's throat snake is out, and they're just like, caught you. You're a monster. Let's tie you up. And this is when she tells them everything. Like, Larry and I opened this place because I don't want to kill people. And I actually figured out I can help people. You know, I'm making people happy. I'm helping people get more healthy. Like while still feeding myself. Yeah. Without having to kill nobody. I'm not hurting anybody. Like we can coexist peacefully. What are those other parasites? Like, what is it? Symbiotic relationship where the parasites actually help their thing. Like, go, girl. Good for you. But Alonzo was like, no, I don't like that. She was like, so it's my brother. It's my brother doing it. And I felt so bad whenever she was like, listen, I am not on his side. I'm on your side. I don't want people to be getting killed. And so they're like, okay, cool. So just tell us how to murder your brother. Yeah. That poor woman. She lost her husband and then had to like help these hunters go kill her brother. Which apparently you just got to cut off the throat snake. Who knew that? Easy bango bango. Well, and then they make her give up her company. Yet again, debate of Dean wants to kill her just because she's a monster. And Sam being like, no, but she's a good person. It's like the Amy debate. I mean, how many times have we had this debate? Yeah. You know, kill he killed Amy, anyways, but we let the uh what was it? The werewolf girl go with Lenore. They were gonna kill Lenore, and then Dean agreed to let Lenore live, the vampire. This debate has literally been going on since season two. When's it gonna be squashed? Like we keep coming back to it. Where nope, we gotta, we gotta kill him. You felt differently literally last season. I'm so confused. Why is this becoming a thing again? The brotherly melodrama. It's it's getting repetitive, guys. Yeah. Back at the bunker. Dean's drinking alcohol.

Okay. And even though he said he's not mad about the no brothers thing, he's still mad about the no brothers thing. So he tells Sam, you know what? Like, maybe I I don't I don't feel bad. Everything I did, I did because it was right. Okay. It was the right thing to do. It was the right thing to do. I saved you. I would do it again. I would do it again. And Sam was just like, what good has it done having me be around? We aren't any further toward our goal. And I'm just like, damn, Sam, you're not grateful to be alive anymore? I mean, sure, still be mad about the consent thing and all that other kind of stuff, but I don't know. And just yet again, it's like, if it was reversed, you'd do the same thing for me. And Sam was like, um, do you not remember when I abandoned you in purgatory for a year? No, I wouldn't do the same thing. I wouldn't do it for you, Dean. We've already had this conversation. Like, Dean, you were all beat up and mad at your dad for sacrificing himself to save you. Being all like, what's dead should stay dead, and all this other stuff.

Like, just And he looked so shocked.

Yeah. I mean, there's been some really good one-off episodes this season, but despite there being Abaddon and Metatron and Gaudrill and all this stuff, the overarching uh themes just it just feels like we've been here before. Yeah. So I'm really hoping that something new happens in these last few episodes. Anyway, they are not on good terms. Dean is just like, you said like we need to just stick to business. And see the and Sam's like, yeah, I meant like between us. Like we're not gonna brotherly bond anymore. I'm like, y'all sure are having a lot of these brotherly bond conversations for you to not be brotherly bonding right now. Yeah. I wanted to like this episode. It was really, really, really cute. But then they just leaned so hard into the melodrama there on the end. It kind of ruined it for me a little bit.

I really enjoyed Donna. I even liked the Pish Taco Monster. That was cool. The Valley Spa, where she like figured out a way to actually help people. Like I loved this episode for the most part, but yeah, just that melodrama stuff. I'm like, oh like, oh god, we move on. Uh yeah. And like it's not even about it being melodrama, it's about it being the same melodrama that we've already had in previous episodes, right? Yeah. It was written by Eric Charmello and Nicole Snyder, and it was directed by Phil Sacretia. Uncle Phil. All right. Gore. There wasn't any gore.

But not like the chunk of neck missing, and it was like the way they had that blood pouring out of them was really good, though. That looked awesome. No splooges, though. The chef, the chef, he we didn't get to see his neck hole as good. But yeah, that's when we were just like wasteful. Like right. They have some fat on their bodies, Alonzo. What's wrong with you? Just murdering for no reason now. Did you adore anything about this episode? I kind of just listed mine already.

Yeah. Um, yeah, I really liked Maritza and like how she found a way to help, even though she's technically a monster, I guess. Um, I like her and Sheriff.

Yeah, I liked them. Yeah. There were a few things outdating this episode, right? Like there was some fat phobic stuff going on. Yeah, yeah. That you know, wouldn't wouldn't happen in an episode today, I would hope. Um, but I still think there could have been a way to tell this story without it be the fat phobic stuff. Yeah. Other than that, and the repetitive melodrama, I I enjoyed this episode for the most part. Yeah. What about that lore?

All right. Well, the lore is if this uh pish taco is real. And it sort of is. Oh. So this one's a little different. We've got a full-blown Andean boogeyman with a supply chain problem. I keep wanting to say pistachio so bad.

No. No, no. Not today. But here's the wild part. It is actually rooted in something real. Historians trace the legend back to actual 16th century colonial practices. Spanish conquistadors reportedly used fat rendered from indigenous corpses to treat wounds and illness, and early chroniclers recorded that highland communities lived in genuine terror over Spaniards allegedly killing people specifically to harvest their grease for medicine.

Over the centuries, the pistaco's reputed employer has shifted with the times. First it was Spanish soldiers, then supposedly sketchy priests wanting fat to improve church bell acoustics. Then it became hacienda owners, then factory and machinery operators. Basically, whatever new industry showed up, folklore slotted the pistaco in it as its behind-the-scenes fat supplier. So weird.

Because it played directly into the centuries-old legend. So the myth and reality have a genuinely blurry, uncomfortable overlap. So is it real? Not a literal fat hunting, cryptid roaming the Andes, no, but the fear is built on genuine documented colonial violence, and it's been flexible enough to attach itself to whatever real world exploitation was happening at the time, which honestly might be a little bit scarier than a monster. I mean, damn.
