Garth Returns, Werewolf Cults & the Myth of Fenrir

Garth is back. He killed a cow. And he got hit by a car. We have questions.

Sharp Teeth reunites the boys with everybody's favorite lanky hunter, who has been MIA for six months and has some explaining to do. Turns out Garth got bit on a hunt, fell in love with a born werewolf named Bess, and joined a peaceful werewolf congregation run by a very sincere reverend with a very suspicious wife. Berly and LA are charmed by Garth and Bess, deeply skeptical of the stepmother from the jump, and mildly concerned about Sam Winchester's brain after yet another knock to the head.

Meanwhile, Dean and Sam are technically working together but driving separate cars and absolutely not talking about their feelings. Progress.

The lore this week covers Fenrir, the Norse wolf so catastrophically large and dangerous that the gods had to trick him into being chained up using a magical ribbon and one god's hand as a bargaining chip. He is currently down there waiting.

Welcome to Denim Wrapped Nightmares, Tipsy Exchange podcast, where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.

LA

Over drinks, we'll discuss the lore, the core, and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures. I'm Burley, and I'm a new fan of the series. I'm LA, and I'm here along for the pride. Now let's get tipsy.

Berly

Hello, LA. Hey Burley. Our last episode was Firstborn. Crowley, being a little sneaky sneak, asked Dean to help him go find the first blade so that he could take out Abaddon and not have to worry about the competition. He wants to get rid of her. Dean reluctantly agrees because everybody wants Abaddon dead. You know?

LA

I mean she's pretty fabulous, though. Yeah.

Berly

Gadrill's not in the bar. What else is he gonna do? Dean and Crowley took a road trip. Uh, get it. Oh, wait. That wasn't this episode, that was the other one. It would have worked well though. And they don't find the blade, they find Daddy Murder Kane, guest star Tim Omenson, the first son, firstborn. There we go.

LA

There we go. Yeah.

Berly

Back at the bunker, Sam and Cass are having bonding experiences where Cass is pulling it out slowly. But but Sam just wanted him to get it all. Get Gadrill left. Yeah, get get deeper, get all of Gadrill out of me. Because Gadrill left a little drip, left a little drip of drip behind. They were worried it was going to cause damage to Sam, but once the thing was over, Cass was just like, I fully healed you.

LA

You're good. And that's it. Very nice. Well, today's episode is titled Sharp Teeth. It is the 12th episode of season nine, and it aired on January 28th, 2014. Guess who's back?

Berly

Guess who's back?

LA

I was excited.

Berly

Back again.

LA

Not excited about what he was doing. Right? But very thrown off. We just see that uh somebody, it there's a cow making sounds, a man making sounds, and then there's another man with a gun going after this man making sounds.

Berly

The closed captioning said cow mooing, man grunting.

LA

Well, and I appreciate that. I was still like writing my notes to you saying that. I was like, oh good. Okay. Because I wasn't watching or really listening. So I was like, oh, okay. But yeah, so this guy, and it's another cute little house, ranch house on some farm. But yeah, the guy is running through the woods chasing after this guy that was doing something to his cow, we don't know yet. And shooting after him, and the guy runs out from the forested area and just gets hit by a car. Right. And we see poor Garth on the road. We were both like, no. Yeah. I was like, what a way to start. Like, bring him back. They're always just bringing him back to like disappoint us in some way, you know? To hurt him. Yes. But poor Garth. He ended up alright in the end. True. So he's at the hospital, and we see Sam come in and ask for what did he call him? The Ichabod Crane looking guy. Yeah. And the lady at the desk's like, oh, he's very popular today. And you knew right away. Yeah. And of course, Dean's already in there.

Berly

With his scruff, his scruff is still I mean. I thought that was gonna go away after he sobered up, but I guess. I like it. He yeah, I'm liking it.

LA

This is uh what loner Dean? Loner Dean.

Berly

Yep. I like it. We we did miss that. That the reason Sam didn't go with Dean is because he told him, I'm going alone.

LA

Yeah, yeah.

Berly

You you don't get to come with me to hunt Gadrill. And Sam was just like, Okay. Yeah, I'm not gonna stop you. Dramatic. You cause this entire situation and people are mad at you, so you're just gonna get be madder than them. Yeah. Cool. He's getting sloppy too because he didn't test Garth. Uh, yeah, you even mentioned that. Yeah. Whenever he had that needle, whenever he like was messing with something in his hands, I totally thought, oh, it's gonna be the holy water, the silver, whatever. Why don't they just wear silver rings?

LA

Good point.

Berly

So they can shake hands and stuff. Anyway, and then yeah, Sam later was like, Did you test him? And he's like, No. I was gonna shoot him up with adrenaline first.

LA

Yeah. Great idea. But yeah, so they're standing there, and Dean tells Sam that Garth killed a cow and then ran off and got hit by a car. And yeah, so Dean was gonna hit him with adrenaline, but no, no, Sam didn't like that. So he's like, you know what? Backhand. Just backhanded the shit out of him. So this obviously wakes up Garth and he looks terrified. But then he looks at the guys and is like, what? What's happening? And he said, Am I in heaven? I know. Oh my god.

Berly

I was like, I was thinking same. I think the same. I'm in a bed and these two are standing over me. Right. Am I in heaven?

LA

What a dream. But as they're talking to him, um, Garth mentions he was on a hunt and Dean says something about him being AWOL for six months.

Berly

Yeah.

LA

They hadn't known anything about where he was until they got this call that or some sort of notification that he killed a cow and was in the hospital. Garth starts to get sickly, choke in on it stuff, and runs to the bathroom. Sam and Dean kind of have a little chit chat, and Sam fills him in on the grace taken out of him and all that, which I loved when uh he was like, it's turns out uh Gadrill Gadrill Gadrill Gadrill left some stuff in me. And Dean's like, you know how much messed that messed up that sounds. That doesn't sound good. Yeah. It's like exactly.

Berly

Oh, I bet you I bet you Garth was on the news. He was a John Doe. Oh, yeah. So I bet you people are like, you know, this guy's at the hospital if anybody knows him.

LA

Well, while they're chit-chatting and Garth's barfing in the bathroom, Sam notices Daddy's mark. Daddy of Death's mark, not Daddy. Yeah. Dean's just like, oh, no big deal. It's just the mark of Kane. Yeah.

Berly

And Sam goes, a wrestler? I died.

LA

Dean should have just been like, Yeah.

Berly

Yeah. Yeah. Kane and Undertaker came on by and marked me, man. It was awesome.

LA

Should have been there. Yeah. That's a story. But no, he's like, no, the biblical one. The Bible guy, yeah. Yeah. And he's real hot, Sam. You should have seen him. Yeah. We shared things. So Garth's been in there for a minute, and they run in and windows open, Garth's gone. So they run out, outside, try to see where he went. All they see is his hospital gown on the ground, and they're like, so he stole a car naked? Yeah. What's that about? They see a camera, and Dean's like, I got this. I'm gonna go check out surveillance. Sam goes to the farmer who where this cow was murdered by Garth, and Dean goes to get the surveillance footage.

Berly

You know what? The farmer called it.

LA

He really did.

Berly

Sam was like, What's going on? He was like, cult shit.

LA

Yeah. Well, he was like, at first it was chickens, then it was goats. And you know, it looks, I mean, it kind of looked like sacrifices. And Sam was like, come again. And he's like, Yeah, all the organs were gone. Like classic.

Berly

Cult shit, yeah.

LA

So then we jump back to Dean with the the pictures on the phone with Sam lying to him. And I loved as Dean's walking on the phone with these pictures in hand that he's staring at, lying to his brother. His brother comes around the ambulance and snatches the photos from his hands. Like he fucking knew.

Berly

He's like, Oh, look at this. Look at this camera footage. Full car, make model, license plate. Looks like we've got everything we need. Fucking Dean. Sam's like, I'm sick of your bullshit.

LA

Uh, I mean, yeah. So they go to Garth's apartment. I thought it was a motel. I did too. To be honest. And uh he's there. Doing laundry? Is that what he's doing? Yeah. Oh, he's a good husband. Well, out while they're there, his wife pops out of the closet and attacks Sam. Yeah. Because she knows they're hunters.

Berly

Then after after Garth had assured them nobody's here. Yeah. Nobody else is here. He's all alone. He's just doing laundry. You can look around, and she like pops out from behind that door. Yeah.

LA

Full-on werewolf teeth and everything and the nails. Sam scratched her or cut her? Yeah, he had silver. Okay, yeah. So then it's just very calm afterwards, and they're sitting on the couch, and uh Garth's tending to her little wound, and she's just looking at him with doe eyes. Oh, she's so in love. Yeah. She's in love with her hobby.

Berly

She's like, why are they here? Yeah. Their little pet names and everything. Oh my god. What do you call her? They're so cute. I don't remember, but she had one for him too. Yeah. It's very sweet, very doting on each other. It was cute. Her name's Bess, we learn.

LA

And so he ends up telling them that he was on a hunt, hunting a werewolf, got bit, and he didn't come back out to like resurface because he was embarrassed. He didn't want to admit he was a hunter and this happened to him, especially to Dean and Sam. Right. You know, which understandable and kind of heartbreaking.

Berly

You've seen how Dean and Sam are. Depending on the day, they might try to save you or they might just shoot you.

LA

Yeah. Because I and remember, I thought that his wife was uh Sam's old friend. Yeah. Thinking, but then I was like, oh no, then I was like, oh no, like Dean killed her, but then you thought I was talking about the college girl. Right. But it's like so perfect example. Will they, won't they?

Berly

Right, exactly.

LA

So yeah, in his shame and embarrassment, he he was cute. He was like, I went and had my my favorite meal, watched my favorite movie, and then I was gonna off myself. But fortunately, Bess found him and kind of saved him and took him under her wing and brought him into this family unit she has. And we learned that she is a born vampire.

Berly

And then we realized, oh, in bitten, that's why that had a different name for that guy. That's why they weren't calling him an alpha, because it's not the same thing.

LA

Yeah. Yeah, she's yeah, she's second generation, I think she said. Uh they invite them to come to their come pray. Yeah, oh yeah, come pray with us. That's what he said. Yeah. I was like, hey, family.

Berly

Just come congregation. Yeah. Come see it. Come see that nothing's wrong. See, see that everything's fine.

LA

So Dean's like, all right, I'll go pray.

Berly

But I was like, Dean only prays whenever he's calling out to his boyfriend to come help him.

LA

Oh my god, that was so good. When you said that, I was like, You're so right. Don't you know that, Garth? Well, he's making an exception. Although he doesn't pray, he just observes. Yeah. And Sam goes to do the research on the livestock in town to talk to the sheriff. So when Dean goes to this yet another adorable house.

Berly

So cute.

LA

They're all singing some. I don't know if it's a hymn, just a song, whatever.

Berly

All I know is it was second, third, fourth verse, same as the first. And I was like, that went on at least one verse too long. It did.

LA

So they're all in this house singing. Garth's on the he's tickling the ivories. And he runs over to Dean. It's like, hey, what do you think? You know, that's great, right? Which I immediately, when the oh, the stepmom came to the door when Dean got there. And I immediately was like, Colt.

Berly

Yeah, you were you did, you did. She was too friendly. You're the one with silver Dean. I'm inviting you into my house. I promise you'll be safe. It's so weird saying stepmother. I just want you to extend. Yeah. Who does that? Like, I'm his mother-in-law. I'm sorry, stepmother-in-law. Why did you feel the need to distinguish that? Yeah, and then say that it's weird. Nobody asked.

LA

That's when I knew.

Berly

And that's whenever I was like, oh, she's gonna be the bad guy. You were, I mean, you called it. Why was she emphasizing she's the stepmother? That's weird. Yeah. Especially if she's been raising best since she was a little girl. Yeah.

LA

You were you're you're good. We both called it in certain yeah, in different ways, yeah. Well, Garth is not happy. Dean's not happy and impressed with his new family dynamics. So they the the Reverend comes over, Jim. Nice guy, invites him to to break bread. I loved, he's like, come break bread with us. You'll see. See how different we are. I didn't see no bread. Uh there was no bread, and I like that Dean was like, why would I do that? He does sit down to dinner with them, and immediately I was sitting there thinking, poor, like, I just see like organs, bloody organs on the plates. And I was like, what are they gonna serve Dean? But you notice they cooked his meat, thankfully. So yeah, weird family dynamic at the table.

Berly

And I thought it was weird that it's like you were just hosting gospel session in your house, you're the reverend at a church, you're going to church, and Dean is like, So y'all aren't gonna pray before you eat? And he's like, We're not religious, we're spiritual. I was like, What?

LA

Wait a minute, what?

Berly

See, cult.

LA

Yeah, cult, cult. And as they're all eating, I was sitting there thinking, well, if you're this civilized and putting things on plates, like just go to your fucking butcher. Don't kill the poor farmer's animals. Right, or go to the farmer directly.

Berly

Yeah. Can we buy from you directly? Work smarter, not harder, you know? Yeah, you're gonna keep getting caught if y'all keep doing weird shit. Yeah.

LA

But then you know what I was thinking? I was like, I was thinking they could do that, but I bet because of their animal instincts, they need to hunt sometimes, you know.

Berly

Maybe.

LA

Anywho. So after dinner, Dean's looking in the fridge that's full of bloodied plates of things. And these two creepers are just standing there watching him.

Berly

It's the stepmother's kiddos.

LA

Yeah. I in my notes, I just constantly creep creeper creepers. And so they're just standing there, and Dean turns around and he's like, hey, like he's like, I just thought maybe you had some beers, and they don't say anything. Um, well, they may have, I don't know. But Garth comes in, and so they him and Garth go off and they have a conversation, and it was a little heartbreaking where Dean kind of accuses him, like, why the hell haven't you contacted us, even if you were ashamed? And Garth is like, Well, even though I was gone, don't think like for not one second I wasn't missing you and Sam and Kevin. Oh, that was a knife to the heart. That stung.

Berly

That stung. Especially the sincerity on DJ Qual's voice face whenever he was saying it.

LA

Yes. And so Dean had to break the news to him that Kevin was gone, which made I think Garth feel even worse. You know, not that that was Dean's intention, but yeah. Uh, but he does end up apologizing for you know going a while not talking to him. Uh meanwhile, Sam is talking to the sheriff, and this happy go-lucky sheriff is just we don't ever have any crime around here, mister. We should have known. That family, oh, they're just salt to the earth. Everybody's good. It's just a small town folk, nothing crazy goes on here. So the guys meet back up, and while they're together, Sam was like, What's going on here? They seem like good country folk, like everything's fine. You were like, you were like, you were saying, same. Yeah. Why are we here? Uh, but while they're having this chit-chat where Sam's basically like, let's let's roll. Things are fine. Uh, he gets a call from the sheriff he spoke with earlier and tells him that there's been an incident. Come meet him. Which I like to point out at this part. The boys each have their own car now. Right.

Berly

Which I think is so funny.

LA

It just it's just so weird. And Sam, I love Sam's car though.

Berly

It's so cute.

LA

The blue, it's cute. But they're having this conversation, like sitting on the hoods of their cars, and then they both get into each of their cars to go do this.

Berly

It's like we're not together. We're not together. Yeah, we're not working together. Yeah, but we're working together.

LA

And they meet up with the sheriff. There is a dead deer on the side of the road, which again, in my mind, I'm thinking, you guys are going after this poor farmer's like like cattle and things that he owns. Why not go after the deer and wolf population that's overpopulated?

Berly

Watch Twilight. Yeah. See? Uh anyway. Go hunt the deer and play some baseball. Yeah. Leave the cows alone. Leave the cows alone.

LA

Oh my god. Okay. Anywho, so they go to inspect this dead deer on the side of the road. And I instantly knew I was like, the way that their backs were turned, and the sheriff was just standing there, was like, oh no, he's no good. No good.

Berly

And it's just so weird. Why are you calling them in the middle of the night to come look at some roadkill? Like it was just weird. But the nails looked amazing. They shot out. The nails looked amazing.

LA

And the teeth.

Berly

Yeah, he looked good.

LA

And they turn around and they're like, oh shit.

Berly

This fucker.

LA

It is a cult. They didn't say that.

Berly

They figured that out shortly though, because Dean noticed the bullet necklaces at dinner. And then the sheriff had the bullet necklace and they saw Ragnarok.

LA

I forgot about the yeah, yeah, yeah. And that threw me for a loop with the Ragnarok thing.

Berly

Same.

LA

I was like, wait a minute, what? We're going to Norse mythology now? I was like, so they're not werewolves?

Berly

Like, what's what's happening? Or lichen? Lichen, what are they? They like to be called the lichens.

LA

I love that one at dinner, Garth was like, we don't prefer the term werewolf. We prefer lichen thread.

Berly

Yeah, we don't say the W word. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, the annoying thing she said was that they wear the the bullet like to remind them that they're vulnerable and just like humans or something like that. Think they're better than indestructible, yeah.

LA

But we wear these because we know we are. They're standing there, and then the sheriff goes to like go after them, and Dean just fucking whips his knife and right to the heart. Yeah, he's he's new Mr. Murder. I know, but like they haven't really addressed that yet. But it's like he's so stealthy, it's impressive. I mean, he's been killing things for a long time. I know, but like the like accurate accuracy and speed and like just surety that he's been doing, I feel like now is it's like I like it. Cause yeah, he like he didn't even flinch. It just went straight to that that werewolf's heart. It was very fast. Damn. Yeah.

Berly

Even Sam kind of seemed like, oh, yeah.

LA

Well, and the fact that he hasn't explained that to Sam yet, I feel like Sam's like, like how I was thinking, like, damn, like man, he's gotten good.

Berly

He didn't explain the whole, oh yeah, like Kane is daddy murder and he gave his mark. Like he just was like, Oh yeah, the Bible Kane. I'm just really gave me the mark so I can kill Abaddon. That's it.

LA

Once again, Dean says, Let's split up. He's gonna go to the church, check out this reverend, see what he can find there. Sam needs to go find Garth, lock him up until we figure out what's going on. So Dean's looking around the church, and then he goes into, I guess, the Reverend's office, gets on the computer, and discovers.

Berly

Well, he finds that Bible first, that werewolf Bible. Oh, I thought Sam found that. I thought that was in the church. It was very difficult to know who was who during this scene. True. Because I'm not complaining. I like hands, and they were doing an awful lot. You didn't make mention. They were doing an awful lot of close-ups on hands, and I have not memorized whose hands are whose. So I I got confused as to who was who at certain points. I okay, hold on. And it would show like one of their hands grab a doorknob and jiggle it, and then it would show the other, like it shows Sam sneaking up to the door, and then it showed the hand grab a knob, and then it cut to Dean walking in a door, and so I was just very who grabbed the knob. I even rewound it.

LA

It was Sam. It was Sam for sure, right?

Berly

Sam grabbed the knob.

LA

Sounds so wrong.

Berly

Grab that knob, Sam. He I he he he jiggled it. Okay, I will it looked it did look very tiny in his hand, so I bet it, I bet it was Jared. I bet it was Jared Padalecki's hand.

LA

Uh well, either way, so somebody finds a Bible. One of these brothers finds what was that accent? One of them!

Berly

What was that accent? One of these brothers.

LA

I don't know. I'm just which one? I don't know. And I just snorted. I'm I'm sorry.

Berly

Okay, so one of them finds a Bible. Dean definitely got on the computer and Googled.

LA

Right. I'm sorry. No, you're fine. Searched things. Oh yes. We don't know what search engine.

Berly

It was searched, it was searched things. That was the search engine. Was it really?

LA

Oh my god. Oh, that's why you said that. I wasn't looking because I was taking my notes. I I just thought you were just being funny. Oh my god, that's okay.

Berly

Oh, and Sam also discovers Garth and Bess are M I A. Right. They're gone. The place looks like it's been turned over also.

LA

And so yeah, there's some book, cool looking book, by the way.

Berly

Yeah, I like the cover.

LA

That like mentions Ragnarok and everything. But yeah, Dean researches on the computer and he finds that werewolves worship Fenris, a wolf god. Good. And they believe that when Ragnarok comes, uh, that they will rule over mankind. So and it flashes back and forth. So then we're back with Sam. He gets knocked out in the apartment. And what what? He gets knocked out. I just can't.

Berly

LA was just like, there's no way he doesn't have that CTE that the football players get.

LA

I'm I'm concerned about him. This poor man's brain. And then let what last episode Crowley's digging needling into his brain. Like, my God, how is he anyway? Anyway, all right. So yeah, Sam's kidnapped by the creepers from the kitchen. And Dean confronts the Reverend. The Reverend does show up at the church and they have a chit-chat. And he's kind of confronting him, telling him, Oh, I I know all about you, Ragnarok. And the Reverend's like, No, like I I I eradicated all that hate and all those, you know, things that most werewolves think of humans. Not in my not in my house, he says.

Berly

Yeah.

LA

I I got rid of that. And so Dean's like, yeah, I don't believe you, Ragnarok. So he goes over and looks at his bullet on his necklace, and it's clean. No Ragnarok. So then he's like, Well, great. This guy's legit who he says he is. It's not him. And so then he's like calling Sam. Can't get a hold of him because Sam's tied up in some barn with Bess and Garth. Right. And the creepers. Stepmom shows up, slaps the shit out of her stepdaughter for no reason. What the fuck was that? She just comes in hot. Yeah.

Berly

And it's like, I'm not your mother.

LA

Yeah. Which I don't even think she said that, did she?

Berly

Yeah. She said mother? Yeah. Bess was like calling for help, like calling her mom for help. And then that's when her mom leaned over and slapped her. And was like I'm not your mom.

LA

Well, and then she goes over to Garth because Garth gets upset. She slapped her. And then she pistol whips Garth, right? And it's like, you brought these hunters here. I'm gonna take out all of you. I'm gonna set the scene. Yeah. Then we learn that she is a fourth generation werewolf. And what set this all off was that her brother got killed last winter by some hunters. And she went to her husband and he was like, No, we have to stay with this way of life. He wasn't gonna accept that they shouldn't enact revenge. No. Peace is more important. Exactly. And she said, fuck that. Yep. Fuck that husband.

Berly

Fuck that husband.

LA

I'm gonna I'm gonna start back up the cult. Yeah. She said, no. No, no, no. And so she got her two creeper boys.

Berly

I don't think they're her boys. They're calling them cousins. They're calling them cousins in here. Okay.

LA

Well, the cousins.

Berly

The cousins, the creeper, the creeper cousins.

LA

We're like, well, how did she do this? And I was like, she was recruiting them through the church.

Berly

Through the church.

LA

Using her husband in so many ways.

Berly

Bless him. Poor guy. Stepmama, evil stepmother, explains the whole Finris lore. And that Finnriss wanted to kill all the humans because lichen lichens were better than humans. And she was just like, Yeah, so we're gonna go back to doing that. So I'm gonna make this all look like you fuckers came in here and killed everybody because whenever hunters, human hunters come and kill his precious baby, maybe that'll be enough.

LA

Yeah. Because it wasn't enough that she lost her brother. Right. That that didn't motivate him. Maybe this will.

Berly

Maybe this will if I can't take his only make him think that humans killed his only daughter. Right.

LA

When she wasn't doing nothing wrong.

Berly

Yeah.

LA

So she pulls out her pistol and aims it at her stepdaughter and about to shoot, but that long-legged moose just went, yeah! Yeah. It's funny because he did that in this episode, and I feel like one of the other ones recently, I was like, that leg, those long legs. But yeah, he kicks the knife out of her hand. And when this was all going on, we do see Dean show up at the farm. He got one of the creeper cousins. Yeah, and took a jacket so that they wouldn't smell him. And uh yeah, he busts in right after the karate kick to the gun by Sam. Takes out the uh other creeper cousin, and then the step mama. Yeah, and then and again, another stealthy move.

Berly

Right to the heart. Yeah, right to the heart. That blood, that blood soaking through her little sweater set was was good. That squib, that squib did a good job.

LA

I did like though when she um like went was going to kill Bess, Garth. We saw a little of the werewolf.

Berly

Oh yeah. I thought we were gonna get to see him go full werewolf, but we only got to we only got like a little sneaky pee. Yeah. I hope we get to see it eventually. I know I want to. Me too.

LA

I mean, as much as I love him and I hate that that happened, I want to see it. I want to see it too.

Berly

I really want to see it too. And then the stepmama, before she like stood up to kill Bess, it's like, you came in here hot, slapping her and being like, I'm not your mother. And now you're gonna be like, I don't want to have to do this.

LA

Oh yeah. I forgot you were so right about that. Cause it was like, she's like, Don't you call me mother? And I was like, but then she wants to be all this hurts me.

Berly

This hurts me too. Yeah.

LA

What?

Berly

Okay, lady. Get back on your medication. Yeah. I was about to say.

LA

Oh my god.

Berly

Like, I'm sorry, I'm sorry your brother died. Like, go therapy. Therapy.

LA

Like, this is not how you deal with your problems.

Berly

No, no. Oh, well, after all of that, they're back at the Reverend Jim's house.

LA

Yeah. And poor Reverend Jim is sitting there with Bess at the table, and he's a mess.

Berly

Yeah, whenever Garth was saying, like he feels like he should have seen earlier what was happening. That broke my heart for him.

LA

I mean, he's just an innocent guy trying to do what's right, thinking everybody agreed with him. So that was sad. So they start to say their goodbyes, and Sam and Garth hug. Yeah. It was a sweet little hug between them. And then, of course, Dean's standing over there.

Berly

Leaned up against the wall.

LA

Yeah, just watching, being scruffy. Oh yeah. Good. And so then Dean comes over, or no, he goes to Dean and is um talking to him, and and Dean makes sure to tell him, you know, Kev what happened to Kevin was his fault. And I thought it was so sad. Garth was like, no, he was like, I'm, you know, I took off. Kevin was my friend. Right. And I just left him, and friends don't do that. Yeah. And that's when Dean was like, no, no, no. Like, that's on me. Not on you. Not Sam. Like, that's on me.

Berly

I also liked that Garth didn't argue with him per se, but he was like, okay, well, there's plenty of blame to go around. Like we can all carry. Which is very true. And that's the truth.

LA

That's the truth. Yeah. Dean held out his arms for a hug, and Garth hesitated. He's like, get in here before I change my mind. I loved that. Dean's dropping Sam off at his blue car. And they get, or Sam gets out to go to his car. Dean jumps out and is like, hey, things were good when we were together. Hunting, you know. I don't know how it's working. And Sam's like, no.

Berly

Yeah, I'm I've had enough of your shit. I've had enough of your shit.

LA

What did he see? He said, uh, hold on. Sam Dean's trying to say like things were better when we're together. Like we when we rode together. He's like, get rid of your cool car. You can't compete with me. You can't have that cool car. And Sam's like, no, we don't see see things the same way anymore. I can't trust you. Like, you lied to me, you've done all these things without my consent. And you want to like you always go back to, oh, we're family, we're family, we're family. But it's not family. He was like, if you want to be brothers, that's one thing. But you can't just keep saying this family stuff.

Berly

You can't just keep using that as an excuse for I'm gonna treat you like shit, but we're brothers, and I'm I'm done being mad. So yeah.

LA

And just making choices without me, like not trusting me enough to like consult me in these choices. That's kind of how the conversation ends, but they do both get back into the Impala together. Which I was surprised by. I thought Sam was gonna be like, you you noodle on that one, and I'll see you in a little bit. Right? So it's just a stern warning. Yeah, he's like, I'll get in the car with you, but don't you think we're family or brothers until you start trusting me.

Berly

You think about this on our drive home together in the same car. And I'm gonna need to know what happened to his car. It wasn't his car, LA. He stole it.

LA

Well, he should keep it. It's very nice. You're not done. This episode was written by Adam Glass and directed by John F. Showbalter.

Berly

Alright, gore. The bloody animals and the bloody dinner table and all of that.

LA

Dinner table, honestly, probably. Yeah.

Berly

There wasn't as much gore as I would have thought with a werewolf episode, though.

LA

Well, they were civilized.

Berly

Oh, that's right. You're right. I forgot. Did you adore anything about this episode? I mean, of course, Garth. Garth. Garth. This was a cute one. It was a cute one. I'm glad they didn't leave that just open-ended that we got an answer to where the fuck Garth has been. I've been waiting. Yeah. And he looked so cute.

LA

He was so cute.

Berly

And I like him and Bess.

LA

Yeah. Oh my God. That little scene on the couch when he's tending to her wound was adorable.

Berly

They're adorable. They're adorable. I hope we get to see more of them in the future. Yeah. Very, very cute episode. Okay, so first things first, let's clear something up. In the episode, they were talking about the Norse god Finn Riss. That is actually a Marvel character. So weird. Who is based. Maybe there's some sort of copyright thing. I don't fucking know. But the character Finn Riss is based on a different character. So we're going to talk about who it's based on today. I'm not going to talk about a Marvel comic book character today. Good. Alright, here we go. You thought werewolf history was dramatic. Buckle up. Because Norse mythology decided regular wolves weren't scary enough and gave us Finrear, a wolf so big, he's basically an apocalypse with teeth. The family tree is a red flag. Fenrir is the son of Loki. Yes, the trickster menace. And a giantess named Angraboda, whose name essentially translates to she who brings grief. His siblings are the world serpent, Yorgomond, and Hell, ruler of the underworld. So really, Problem Child was the best case scenario here.

LA

I love that it's saying that the family tree itself is a red flag when in our episode that family was a big red flag.

Berly

Same. I didn't know my family was in a cult. Yeah. The gods tried to leash him twice. It did not go great. Finrear kept growing at an alarming rate, and the gods, spooked by prophecies that he'd bring them nothing but disaster, tried binding him with heavier and heavier chains. He snapped the first two like they were nothing, both apparently strong enough to become sayings for achieving something through great effort. Wow. Enter Glypnir, the ultimate trust exercise. Worried, the gods had dwarves forge a magical ribbon out of bizarre ingredients. Finrear, understandably suspicious, agreed to be bound only if a god put a hand in his mouth as a good faith pledge.

LA

Kinky.

Berly

Just an A god, Fin Rear. You didn't say multiple. You got one. You're good. Tyr loses the bet and his hand. Once Ben Rear realized he was actually stuck. And that's the mythological reason Tyr goes down in history as one-handed. The gods reportedly found this hilarious. Tyr notably. Not so much. Like everybody else is like laughing. Oh my god, this wolf that's gonna bring about the end of the world. We can't get it under control. But look, he bit off his hand. Alright, so he's still down there waiting, gagged with a sword and drooling an entire river called Vaughn. Fenrir stays bound until Ragnarok, the Norse Doomsday, when he finally breaks free. And depending on the version, either helps devour the sun or goes straight for Odin himself, swallowing the All Father whole before Odin's son kills him in revenge. So the vibe? Basically, the OG, we raised a monster, and now it's going to end the world story. Sam and Dean would have had feelings about this one. True. Sam would have had uh trauma triggered. Son born to end the world. He was born to be Lucifer's best.

LA

Whoops. Alright, well, quote to close it out is from Garth. After the guys came in and, you know, Bess attacked. Because what could she think when he says you two came busting in here like a house on fire, guns waving, the jawlines in the hair? It's very intimidating. The delivery was great.

Berly

Cheers.
