Dean Winchester had a whole secret life, and Sam had absolutely no idea.
A call from the past drags the boys to Hurleyville, New York, where a ghost is terrorizing a home for troubled kids. Routine enough, except Dean spent two months at this exact farm as a teenager. He joined the wrestling team, got his first kiss, was going to go to the school dance... and then vanished without a trace. The story John told Sam? A complete lie.
The case itself delivers: a lawnmower, a housekeeper named Ruth with all the tea about the farm's murderous history (meat cleaver, corn liquor, jealous husband), and the ghost makeup in this episode is genuinely some of the best of the series.
But the heart of this one is Dean. The flashbacks hit hard, the feelings are very much not talked about, and by the end, Sam just says "thank you" while Dean pretends not to know what he means. Classic.
Also in this episode: can a person be literally haunted? The lore this week says yes, and it reframes everything you just watched.

LAOver drinks, we'll discuss the lore, the gore, and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.
BerlyI'm Burley, and I'm a new fan of the series.
LAI'm Ellie, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get tipsy. We're recording.
BerlyOh, I don't even have my headphones on. I'm definitely gonna keep that sound effect in there, though.
LAOkay.
BerlyHello LA.
LAHey Burley. Last episode was titled Heaven Can Wait. Can't. God, can't wait. It's just it just can't wait. It just can't. Anyway, uh Cass is living his best human life as Steve at the gas station attendant. When a rogue angel starts exploding sad people into pink mists, a Dean swoops in to drag Cass back into action, and they figure out it's a hands of mercy angel who's basically misreading human emotions as unbearable suffering. Meanwhile, Sam's wrangling Crowley into translating some dead language, and Crowley, the messy queen that he is, uses Kevin's blood to call Abaddon, who's collecting souls. Cass almost gets got by the rogue angel, but slides in the blade just in time. And then Sam sees Crowley secretly injecting Kevin's blood into himself at the end. Like, what does it do to him?
BerlyI don't know.
LAIt makes him want to rewatch HBO's Girls. But like, why did he need like so he said he just already had Sam's and he so he wanted to try a different flavor?
BerlyYeah, so what's what's Kevin's blood gonna make him want to watch? Right Six Feet Under that's my guess.
LAReally?
BerlyThat's a good show.
LAOh, it is. But I just don't correlate that back to Kevin.
BerlyIt was a smart show. Maybe the newsroom, but there wasn't that many seasons of it. So my next guest Six Feet Under.
LAOkay, I see.
BerlyToday's episode is titled Bad Boys, Bad Boys. I'm just kidding, it's just the one. It's the seventh episode of season nine, and originally aired on November 19th, 2013. The episode opens up in Hurleyville, New York. We see a few boys playing hide and seek. They run off into a barn, and little Timmy fell down the well. No? No. Okay. No, Timmy runs to the barn. He's like, oh my god, guys. Did you say the bar? Barn. Barn. He runs into the barn. He's like, oh my god, guys, this is off limits during hide and seek. Y'all know that. But then he runs in, shuts the door, and goes because Jack is coming. Jack opens the door and is like, Alright, y'all aren't done with your shit. Supper time's coming. Get this stuff wrapped up. Like, let's go, or you're gonna get the belt. Yeah. And the boys are just like, hee hee hee hee hee hee he.
LAHe he he he.
BerlyWhich why they were laughing at that.
LALike, uh yeah.
BerlyLike it does he like never actually spank them? Is he is he just like threatening it and they know that he's full of shit? Like, I don't know, but it like said laughing at the bottom, too. I was like, what? Well, you know who didn't think it was funny? The old busted up tractor that was in the barn. Yeah. And so it turned itself on and vroom vroom. But first, I forgot, like, it did show Jack like start breathing cold air. Oh, yeah. And it was so subtle. They did it so subtly at first. Actually, I don't know if they did it so subtly at first. It might have just been Canada, because that's what I thought at first. Because you could see the you could see the air very lightly, and then it started getting more and more obvious that there was cold air. Anyway, he gets got by the tractor. And you know what? I'm sorry, Jack. I don't mean to victim Blaine here, but I just feel like you could have dodged a little bit something more than what you did there.
LAYeah, I could see it. I mean, he was older.
BerlyMaybe he's just not so he tripped on that rock, flexible, you know. But I just I feel like I would have at least turned sideways and sucked in as much as I could and hoped for the best rather than just letting it straight up penetrate me up against the you know? Yeah. Well, anyway. Then we get supernatural. We're not in Hurleville anymore. Now we're in Lebanon, Kansas, in the bunker. Sam's walking around like, hello? Oh, Kevin. Kevin. And so he decides, you know what? I'm gonna snuggle up here with a good little book. And I love that he picked up uh Wizard of Oz. Because I was like, Aww, he's probably thinking about Charlie. I know. Then he hears vibration, and of course it's Sam Winchester. He's like, I'm gonna go and investigate what that is. Well, it's just a phone, it wasn't something fun. He answers it and he's like, Um, you have the wrong number. I don't know, a D-Dog. Well, Dean had come walking in right behind him right before he answered the phone, just takes the phone from Sam. It was kind of rude. I thought it was a little rude. And it's just like, oh, it's me, Sonny, what's going on? And so Sam was just sitting here being like, What the f he hangs up the phone. Sam's like, okay, D-Dog, like, what's the deal? What what did you hear? Who's Sonny? And Dean says, Oh, well, you remember that one time 10 years ago, 10 12, however many years ago it was, where I disappeared for a little bit, and Sam was like, Oh, yeah, like you got lost on a hunt or something, like whatever. No, I wasn't lost. I lost our lunch money on a card game, and then I had to steal food to feed us, and I got caught and arrested, and ended up at this school for boys. And dad was pissed off at me, so he just like left me there.
LAIt's a boys' home. I don't think there's school. School for boys. I didn't think it was a school, though. Not that oh, you're right.
BerlyHe was they were going to public school. Whatever. Okay, so whatever. They were in this farmhouse, okay, and John found out and left him there. And Sam was very confused as to why they lied to him about it. Same, Sam, because I still don't understand why.
LAYeah, he wasn't letting it go.
BerlyHe but I I understand, like, why did they not tell him either? That's that's a silly thing to not tell him. Yeah, Dean got in trouble and he's gonna stay there for a little bit. End of story. Why are you lying and saying that he went missing or whatever? Like, that seems like a worse story to tell a little boy. Your brother's missing. Well, maybe it's worry.
LAMaybe it's because he enjoyed it so much. So he didn't want to be like, hey, I was gone and loved life for like two months, and then I had to come back to you. Oh, I didn't think about that.
BerlyBut anyway, I understood why it bothered Sam. It would have bothered me too, because it just would have been like, why lie about this? Right. So I get it. I loved when they were leaving and Dean was like, So are you too tired? Are you gonna be okay to travel? And Sam's like, yeah, like I'm tired, but we're good. We're good. I want to go. I want to go to Hurleville. And then Dean like leans on the table and is like, So everyone's okay with us going to the cat skills?
LAAt first, when he did that, I was like, what? And then I was like, oh, oh yeah. Ezekiel.
BerlyCracks me up. Whatever Dean is like making sure Ezekiel knows he's talking to him. And poor Sam just like, yeah.
LAUh yeah, I'm everybody who are you talking to?
BerlyThey arrive at Sonny's farmhouse, and it is beautiful. The house is gorgeous, the land is beautiful. Like it wasn't out in the middle of nowhere, but just not in the city, country enough. Yeah, out in the country. And whenever they first walk up to the door, Ruth, who is, I guess, like the housekeeper, maybe, I don't know. She answers the door. She is not impressed with Sam and Dean. She immediately assumes that they're convicts, also. Because they're like, We're here to see Sunny. We're friends of Sunny. And she's like, from jail. Prison buddies. Prison buddies. Which is none of your business, Rude. Judge Judy, goodness. And then she tells them, take off your shoes. I freshly mopped the floor. What'd she call them? Roach stompers. Yeah, roach stompers, yeah. And I have to say, I don't know why, but I I was tickled just thinking about the Winchesters walking around in their socks only. Their bear socks. And their little bear sockies just walking around ghost hunting. Then we get a flashback.
LAYou're doing so good.
BerlyAnd I have to admit, when I first saw this episode, it was gonna have flashbacks. I was like, oh god, like Amelia has traumatized me. But they weren't that bad in this episode. No, well, and they were memorable for a certain reason, too. Oh, yeah. We'll get there. Oh my goodness. So we flash back, and there's a cop, and I thought the cop was gonna end up being a monster because he just he was very, very pale and with the sunglasses on. Oh no, he just he looked like oh, he's gonna be a bad guy. But then there was the big reveal that he took the sunglasses off and he had the shiner, and I was like, oh, okay. And like you bruise up quick too. How long ago did you arrest this little teenager boy, this little middle school boy?
LAHe's just got that strong of a punch.
BerlyThe cop leaves him and we meet sunny LA and I liked us some sunny. We were hot for sunny, like a Josh Brolin like country. I like when I see cowboy sunny. Yeah, yeah.
LAYeah, which I'm not usually into.
BerlyI liked the stash.
LASee, I didn't. It was it was definite handlebar mustache, too.
BerlyI'll ride that. But hold on to those handlebars. Oh my god. He used that ponytail like a guiding stick.
LAYeah, okay.
BerlyYou know, following me?
LAI get I get where you're going.
BerlyUh young Sonny though, his his his stash and hair were a little too just for men for me. Like a little too sharp contrast there, like too clearly dyed. Okay. I feel like it could have been a little softer on that. But otherwise, yes, I I enjoyed it.
LAAnd that he had a the gravelly voice.
BerlyThat gravelly voice was really nice.
LAYeah.
BerlyWho is he? I don't know. I was th I was thinking we need to look up who the actor was. Let's see here. I'm like wondering, like, maybe he's a musician guest spot. Oh, yeah, I can see that.
LABut he definitely looked like he could be Josh Brolin's younger brother.
BerlyRight. So that's why I'm thinking, like, if he were an actor, actor, like we would have seen him before here. Blake Gibbons. Hmm. Oh, he is an actor actor. We're just assholes. He was in Seinfeld, General Hospital. Dexter. Oh. Cowboy Sonny. Elvis Sonny. Disco Sonny. Yeah, it looks like he mostly does just like one-off episodes.
LAStars or whatever.
BerlyMm-hmm. Anyway, Sonny. He's like, oh my god, you just stole peanut butter and bread. You're a good kid. Oh my god, you said that werewolves beat you up. We're just gonna move right past that.
LAYeah, those bruises on his arm. They looked awful.
BerlyThey looked awful. And who knows if it was really the werewolf, like he, like, or if he was just covering for the deputy because he was trying to be a tough guy. I bet it was the werewolf. We'll see. We don't see though. We don't. One day, one day we will. That mystery will be solved. But anyway, Sonny explains, you know, some kids might belong in juvie, but you know, kids like you, come on. Like, you're gonna stay here, you're gonna work at the farm, you're gonna get some more discipline, put in your time. It's gonna be better than jail. Like, you don't, you don't need to be in jail.
LAYeah.
BerlyWe come back to the present and we get to see Sonny without the Just for Man mustache. So if you got confused between whether it was past or present, just look at Sonny's mustache. That's all you need to do. And Dean was so happy to see him, and he was happy to see Dean too. It was really cute. Oh, Ruth Ruth came in the room. I forgot about that because I thought that was funny, the way she was like looking at them and staring at them. Well, she's cleaning the table. While she's cleaning the table. And LA jumped to the logical and correct conclusion of, oh, well, I bet you she has some information that she wants to give them. And I was like, no, I don't think so. I think she just wants to see what's going on. Like, I know I would come up with a reason to be up in that room. Same, but but I feel like maybe a bit of both, you know? I would have been like with the feather duster, like, huh?
LAOr like from behind.
BerlyYeah. Oh, I've dropped my I dropped it. Let me bend over and get it. But no, LA was right. She did have something to share with them. Eventually, yeah.
LAWell, and and uh Sonny tells them about Jack.
BerlyRight. He tells them, Oh my god, Jack. But Ruth's story about Jack was way more interesting.
LATrue. True.
BerlyI'm excited to get to that.
LAJack and the drama with a married couple, or Jack died by the random tractor accident.
BerlyRandom tractor that Dean, you remember that tractor. It didn't work for shit, and it suddenly came to life on its own and ran a man over. Weird thing. Yeah. There's also been scratchy noises in the wall. Like, shit's weird, Dean. Shit's weird. Doors and windows slamming. Cold. Sonny's not happy. You know what? It doesn't matter. He's there was cold. Yeah, there you go. A lot of cold going on up in there. Just a lot of cold. Dean goes out to check out the barn, and Sam stays around without his shoes on, walking around through the house. And none of the boys are there. There's only three boys who are there because they're on break. Like they've got to go home for break, see their families, whatever. And I'm like, what break is it? Is it spring break?
LASure.
BerlyThat they didn't have school because it wasn't snowing and it's New York. So that would have been the holidays.
LAYeah, so yeah, I guess spring break.
BerlyBut I don't know. But I wouldn't think I wasn't getting a summer vibe.
LANo.
BerlyYou wouldn't think they'd get to go home for the whole summer.
LAWell, I also like it if it's like an alternative to jail, I don't know. Like, how do they get to go home?
BerlyWell, they get to go to school because Dean was gonna get to go to that business.
LAThat's true, that's true. Okay, okay. So yeah, maybe maybe spring break.
BerlySpring break. We'll say spring break. This is important. It is very important to this story plot line. I mean So Dean's out in the barn and Sam finds Dean's old bed because of the sigils that are like carved into the bedposts. And I thought that was cute. I thought it was really cute Sam just wanting to learn more about his brother.
LAYeah.
BerlyThat was really sweet.
LAI just thought it was cute. Like when he noticed the sigils, there was a big stack of tape on the edge of the bed that had names on it. And so he was tearing away at each piece of tape until he got to Dean W.
BerlyLike he knew it was Dean's, but he wanted that confirmation. Right. He wanted to see it. Well, he sees something out of the corner of his eye. So he pulls out this massive knife.
LAYeah.
BerlyAs one I would have been scared too if I was a poor rude big man coming at me with that knife. He likes throws open the door and she's on her knees with her rosary praying and is like, Jesus. She's gonna scared the shit out of her. And he's just like, Oh, I'm sorry. He's like, I'm so sorry. So, so sorry. I thought I saw something, and she was like, Yeah, the ghost, right? And then Sam was like, Oh, she explains, Oh, I've got the tea. I've got the tea, Sam. So Jack, yeah, he has worked here ever since this farm has existed, essentially. And there was this married couple who owned it before Summy. And back then, they were not on good terms. Howard and Doreen. I mean, they're still not on good terms. Well yeah. Well, Howard was convinced that Doreen was hooking up with Jack because he was on the good uh corn alcohol.
LAThe good corn syrup. What is it? What would Jack?
BerlyCorn syrup count corn liquor?
LACorn liquor?
BerlyCorn alcohol?
LAYeah, something. He was doing too much of that corn something.
BerlyBut Jack was not hitting it, he was not tapping it. And they tried to tell him we're not, but Howard was like, He's hopped up on that corn liquor. I don't think I believe you, so I'm just gonna murder y'all instead. Well, Jack got away, but Doreen did not. And then Sam was like, Oh yeah, he killed her. And Ruth was like, meat cleaver, girl. Meat cleaver. Meat cleaver. Important point here. Meat cleaver. Like, fuck. That was your wife, man. Ow. Yeah. Like that.
LAOof.
BerlyDoreen got pounded and not in the good way. Not at all. Not at all. And not by Jack. Right. And Jack got penetrated, not in a good way. I hope Howard pleased her before he killed her. I don't think he did.
LABut she was she wasn't fucking Jack, so maybe she was fucking Ruth. I don't know. How did Ruth have all this tea, girl? Well, and he had the probably had the corn dick. The corn liquor dick.
BerlyMaybe Doreen had the corn hole.
LAOh my god.
BerlyShe didn't drink it.
LAOh my god. Okay.
BerlyOkay, well, back in the barn. Okay, we're in the barn with Dean. He's looking around and he pulls out his old EMF detector, which was fun. That's always fun when that stuff makes an appearance. It does not make an appearance like it did back in the day.
LAIt looked like it got a little upgraded since last time we saw it, I feel like.
BerlyI don't remember the last time we saw it, so I can't re I cannot comment on that. But I like anytime they pull it out. Well, it's a walkman. They made it out of a Walkman. Like they just adapted props, like took a Walkman and put stuff on it to make it look like an EMF thing.
LAThe boys did or the prop department? No, the prop department did. Okay.
BerlyYeah, it's not supposed to be a Walkman in the show. Right, okay. And I always I think that's a fun fact because every time they pull it out, just the way they hold it, you can tell they're still holding it like a Walkman. Like how we did back in the day, right? So he turns it on, it's all red. So no ghost is up in this bitch right now. She's she's chilling. And then he hears a noise, and so he goes and throws open the door and sees this light bulb swinging around. So he's like, okay, who's in here? It's little Timmy. He's taking a break from his chores. He's in there playing with his clobber in time. What was it?
LAHe said he was fighting monsters with uh I forget the name of the figurine he had or the figure.
BerlyYeah, it he stops evil. He's got, you know, all this kind of stuff.
LADidn't he like he says I clobber evil?
BerlyYeah, that's why I said clobber in time, because that's all I could remember. But I loved whenever Dean was like, you know, decides this kid's not a threat or whatever. And so he goes, I'm Dean, and sticks his hand out.
LAOh my god. And little Timmy just grabs the tips of Dean's hand. And Dean is like, uh, we both commented on it too. I thought I was I said, what just a little fingertip shake, little fingertip shake. It was hilarious.
BerlyIt was my favorite thing Timmy did in this entire episode. It was the best. And so Dean teaches him how to do a proper handshake.
LAWell, and I like that he got like down on his level to do it. Yeah. You know, he's like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
BerlySo we already know, oh, okay, this is definitely like the Dean Dad episode, where it's like the kid, I gotta protect the kid. We haven't had one of those in a while. Yeah, like it's been a good minute. Even when we had the Prometheus kid, Dean didn't seem to give a shit about that kid. Granted, it was little children of the corn. He didn't talk a whole lot, not a lot to get attached to there. But I'm just saying, it's been a while. Sam and Dean end up deciding, okay, so it's gotta be Howard. It's gotta be corn liquor, meat cleaver, Howard, corn dick, whatever it was. So we're gonna go to that grave, easy peasy, salt and burn. We're done. No problem. So before they leave town, Dean takes Sam to this little diner for them to go and get some dinner real quick. The waitress comes up to the table, and Dean is clearly very excited to see her. Oh my god, huge fucking grin. And it says Robin, and she introduces herself, and he's just like, Bet you never see me again. Totally thinking she's gonna be thrilled to see him. And good for her because she did not show the slightest bit of emotion on her face. I'm imagining that she must have seen him come in and get seated, and she was able to take a minute and compose herself. She was probably like this motherfucker and decided I'm gonna act like I don't even fucking know who he is. And so she was able to stick with it because you would have remembered Dean fucking winches. Right.
LAThat's what I when she's all oh, I'm sorry. I was like, I don't think I would have forgotten that face.
BerlyYeah, a lot, a lot of boys come in and out of there, you know, just whatever. Well, Dean is so upset by this, so embarrassed that but like you said, Sam's face. Oh my god, Sam was so entertained, like, what is going on? And then when she had to step away, Dean immediately throws down the menu and is like, let's go. Like he's so upset about it. Sam is just like, what the fuck is happening?
LAI was I was actually shocked Dean was so affected by it. Because you know he tried to keep calm and cool all the time, but he was so embarrassed and upset. And we'd find out it makes sense later on what we find out, but right.
BerlyIt was Winchesters get attached to women very quickly, apparently.
LAWell, and she yeah, yeah.
BerlyWell, unfortunately, while Sam and Dean are at the diner, poor Ruth is trying to take a bath and just relax and just wash her troubles away.
LAAll these boys she's gotta deal with.
BerlyOh, can you imagine? And a ghost. Like she knows the place is haunted.
LAAnd cleaning and cooking.
BerlyWell, the ghost comes in and uses the shower curtain to suffocate her to death. It was a good scene. It was a good scene. The only thing that bothered me is that what the way they had the shower curtain stretched, it looked phenomenal, stretched against her face like that. But I was like, why can't she just slide down underneath it?
LAYou made a good point. Yeah. But it was like her face masked sliding down.
BerlyI mean, it looked cool. Yeah. I'll give them that. I'll give them that. That totally wouldn't have killed her, but it looked cool. It looked cool. And the way they filmed it with the cutting to her face and the cutting to her feet kicking. And it was even the close they did all the psycho type up close of the shower curtain getting pulled off the thing. It was a good scene.
LAYeah.
BerlyAnd like it that oh, I forgot about that. Sunny hears her screaming and is trying to break down the door. And then the ghost just to like fucking her turns up the radio so that he can't hear her anymore and she can't hear him trying to get in there. And whenever the boys come back to the house and he's like, there's no fucking locks. Yeah. So why couldn't I get the door open? Like Sunny, poor man.
LAI thought for sh for a second there, I was like, surely he's gonna knock that door down and save her, but do you think Ruth ever got her some Sunny? Maybe.
BerlyI would have.
LAI mean, uh yeah, I would have too.
BerlyI hope she did. We'll say she did.
LAYes. I mean, like we were saying, she's pretty lady, so she got herself dolled up a couple times. Glass of wine sitting there with Sunny after the boys went to bed.
BerlyWhen all the kids were on break?
LAOh, there you go. Yeah.
BerlyYeah. She loved breaks. Right? I would too. I would too. Well, then we get a flashback. Speaking of Sunny, we've got the Just for Men mustache back, but we've also got the shirt open. Oh, yeah. You were like unbutton it a little more. And then we then they did. They showed that it was actually unbuttoned all the way, and he had a white tank top on underneath it. And I was like, oh man. And we see Robin is working at the restaurant. Dean's very happy to meet her for the first time. And Sonny is just talking with Dean more and talking to him about wanting to be somebody that he can be proud of and asks him about the occult symbols on the bed. He's like, Surely, like a devil worshipper? Like, what's what's going on here? But it's it's just a really cute little bonding conversation where you see how Sonny really did take Dean kind of under his wing and try to help him make the most of his time while he was there. It was sweet. And we got to see them meet Robin. Her her mom apparently teaches guitar lessons to the boys in the flashback. Yeah. Robin takes over teaching the guitar lessons in the present. So back to the present, the EMTs are taking Ruth's body away, and Sonny is telling them about everything that happened, but he also tells them that Ruth had these rosary beads with her all the time. And he can't find them. He's like, they are nowhere to be found. I have no idea where they are. So Sam and Dean are like, well, fuck. Okay, it wasn't this Howard guy. So it's got to be something else. Let's split up. Sam, you go with Sonny and look through like old files about Howard and other people on the property. Maybe it's somebody else. And I'm gonna go find the boys who are here and see if they can't tell me something else that weird has happened or something. So Dean goes and turns the corner, and there's only three boys who have been left behind on break, and two of them are picking on Timmy. So Dean breaks that up right away. And those kids, whenever he was like, Tell me, have y'all seen anything weird going on? I'm not telling you nothing unless you're the cop. He was very eager to whip out that badge. He was so happy. I mean, it was right in their faces. There's no way those kids were able to actually read what was on it.
LABut man, they they immediately started spilling the beans after that.
BerlyI mean, they didn't tell him a whole whole lot. True.
LAWell about Ruth and all that.
BerlyYeah, like you know, that they didn't give him a lot of uh new information, so to speak. And Dean took another moment to kind of like mentor Timmy. Like, okay, now you know how to shake hands. Now I'm gonna tell you kids like that, you need to stand up to them, or they're just gonna keep bullying you, or they're gonna keep running you over. Well, Sam's inside with Sonny, and then he walks past the Wall of Fame and sees that Dean had made it like a got a ribbon at the championship or whatever. And then I'm like, man, these boys accomplished a lot a lot of stuff in a very little amount of time. Dean, two months. Two months, joined the wrestling team, trained, went to a championship, won a ribbon, got a girlfriend, was gonna go. He's gonna go to school dance, you know, completely turned his life around. And then, you know, Sam in that one year that Dean was in purgatory, just completely different person. The two bullies are doing their chores, which involve a lawnmower, one of those old ones. I had a feeling the second I saw it, I had a feeling something's gonna happen with it.
LAYeah, you said that.
BerlyAnd Robin pulls up to come give Timmy his guitar lesson. So of course Robin's there. And while the boys are mowing, it starts making this crazy ass noise. It was the fucking rosary. I didn't see that coming.
LAI didn't either.
BerlyAnd sure enough, they flip it over, and one of the boys sticks his hand in there to get everything loose from the blades, and it turns back on, and we get our 78th blood splooge. Oh wow. Oh, I don't think I counted. We had 76 and 77 with the pink mist. I can't remember if I said that in the last episode. But 78th blood sploog as the lawn mower turns on. It's just a spray. Yeah. It's not a massive chunky splooge or anything, but we decided it should count of the supernatural series.
LAIt it splooged onto the other kid.
BerlyIt splooged on the other kid. Yes, it definitely did. Like all over his arm. Yeah. It got him good. Timmy is watching all of this from the window, doesn't react at all. And so I'm totally thinking, oh, it's Timmy doing it. He's a he's a telekinetic, like that um the demon child Max back in season two that could do the telekinesis stuff like crazy. And it's like, oh, it's Timmy. It's Timmy. But then they pull back and there's this creepy fucking hand on Timmy's shoulder. So I'm like, what the fuck is that? And that this ghost makeup was the rock star of the episode to me. It was phenomenal. So after they get the kids to the hospital, they survive, they're good. Traumatized, but they're okay. They figure out, okay, yeah, so these were bullies picking on them. And Sam shows Dean that he had found in a file that Timmy had actually been abandoned a few years ago. That they like found him in an abandoned building. They're like, parents never showed up. Timmy kept running away from orphanages. So Sonny took him in like three months ago, and that's when everything started happening. So they split up. They're like, we need to find Timmy. Like, we need to talk to Timmy more. It's connected to him. Sam goes to the barn and finds some creepy fucking kid drawings in there of this car crash, the mom in the car like on fire. I thought she was like shaking the kid or something, but it was Timmy's picture of his mom throwing him from the car before it exploded, which is so sad. And then we find out later that Timmy ran away from the car explosion into that abandoned building and cried for his mom. And so she came back.
LAHer ghost.
BerlySeems sweet, but now this ghost is attached to Timmy. We don't know this yet, but that's that's the gig. That's what's happening here. As we know, they start to lose their shit whenever they've been here for too long. So apparently a year was this ghosty ghost's timeline as to Yeah, because she's going crazy. Start losing it. Well, then we get another flashback to Robin and Dean. Because he he walks in and sees Robin playing the guitar with Timmy. And so he gets his flashback to him and her on the couch. And we find out she was his first kiss.
LAAnd she went for it.
BerlyShe did. And it was like a random like, what do you want to be when you grow up? Oh, uh a rock star. Oh, I want to travel the world as a photographer. Cool. Like, just let's go for it. Just go for it. Just making out. I love whenever she was like, Was that your first kiss? He's like, No, I've kissed like a lot. Kissed lots. Yeah. Like, okay, sure guy. And so then she's like, well, we'll have to keep practicing. And then like making out some more. And then we find out that Dean asked her to go to the school dance and promises that he's not going anywhere, that he's definitely going to be there. So yeah, Robin has trust issues already, decides to trust him and be with him. And uh apparently he just up and left town the night of the dance. He no showed her. She had no idea what happened. So that sucks.
LAWhich makes so much more sense for like the dynamic of them being older and the reaction she had and he had. It all made sense once we saw those flashbacks.
BerlyYeah, it all clicked together. So back in the present, Robin looks up and sees Dean, and Dean is like, I'm just gonna need y'all to trust me that I need us to all get together, like shit's about to go down, some some crazy stuff is happening. And she straight up is like, Why would I trust you again? And of course, his takeaway was, I knew you'd remember me. So she is not happy to see that he is still there. But you know, good thing that they got a chance to make up because she got to find out what the family business is and now understands why he just kind of had to leave suddenly in the dead of night. So I'm I'm sure that kind of helped her ease some wounds too. But Dean is just like, we have to get out. And so they try to go to the farmhouse to take off. Door slam shut, y'all are stuck inside. Sorry. Shit starts flying around the house. Robin is going, What the fuck? Because she doesn't know anything yet.
LARight.
BerlyThey take off into the kitchen, and Sam comes in. He hasn't had a chance to tell them about the creepy fucking kid drawings that he saw in the barn just yet. But he's kind of put two and two together, like, oh, this is what's going on now.
LAI will say, like, this whole, like, a lot of shit goes down in this scene. Very fast. In the kitchen scene.
BerlyVery fast. It's like she's just done a murder here, a murder there, and then all of a sudden she was just like, fuck this. I'm done. Like, I am over. Taking everybody out. I don't know who these two hot dudes are that keep showing up, and it's just too much. I'm overstimulated.
LASeriously.
BerlyI mean, she just loses it.
LADoesn't she go after almost she does? All three of them.
BerlyBut I like start saying she she's losing her shit. She doesn't understand what's an actual threat anymore and what is. Like, so she's just lost all comprehension of anything. Yeah. I think she's just overstimulated and needs a nap. Dean asks Timmy, Oh, your little clobbering toy. Like, did your mom give you that before all this stuff happens? Because Dean Sam has now exposed to everybody. It was very cute the way I love Jerry Pavelecki's face whenever he was talking to Timmy. Just very, I'm listening to you like you're a little boy and I'm listening to your story. Yeah. So we get the story out, and then they're like, oh my god, the little clobbering toy. Like that's gotta be it. They throw it on that beautiful stove with like the thing, you know. I was like, oh, that's gonna take forever to get off that stove. Right.
LACould we not have put that in the sink?
BerlyThat nasty plastic smell, too. I bet that was disgusting. So they start burning the toy, but it's not working. So then they're like, fuck, it's the ghost is attached to Timmy. And so I went, burn Timmy. You were like, kill the burn the kid. Burn the kid. LA did not know. You gotta burn the kid. Poor little Timmy. He was so cute. So then they start telling Timmy, like, dude, like, you've gotta tell your mom to let you go and move on. Like, she's not ever going to get back to who she was before. That's not how this works. And also, whenever she flickered into existence on the screen, LA and I were talking to each other and not looking at the screen when that happened. And then we both looked at the screen just in time for it to all of a sudden be her, like throwing Sam up against the wall. We got someone Chester Tension up against the wall. And we both screamed.
LAIt was so startled.
BerlyStartled the fuck out of me. Like we both screamed. And it wasn't just the makeup, it was that very blonde hair against the very blue, deteriorating, gross flesh-looking stuff. Like I literally screamed.
LAOh yeah. Well, and like the kitchen itself was so bright and light.
BerlyYeah.
LAAnd then just her being there.
BerlyAnd the lighting was amazing on her, too. Like normally it's very dark whenever they like we got to see a lot of that. But you're right, it was very bright and light. Shit's flying around everywhere, very poltergeisty vibes, very um, what am I thinking of? Amityville horror, like just shit flying around. And then Timmy finally is like, stop. And Dean is like, firm, like, like the handship.
LAWhen he say kung fu, yeah, kung fu grip.
BerlyKung Fu grip. Yeah. And then he was like, seriously, mommy, fucking stop it.
LAI don't think that's exactly what he said.
BerlyQuit hurting people. I don't fucking want you to do this anymore. Like, I need you to just go. Okay. I will be back. Don't come back. Never come back. Get the fuck out of here. He's you get out of here. I thought you better get mom. I had to explain to somebody. Somebody said, Why do you always say that? And I like made them watch the Kristen Wig Will Farrell awards show skit where you get you get out of here. And she just like burst off all her. It was the cra it looked like her like the fire. Burning the burning and like the char. Yes. Like it was very cool. So cool. I liked it. I liked it a lot.
LAMe too.
BerlyAnd she she doesn't get a speaking role. Not for you, lady. No. But you looked great. You looked phenomenal. And she just sat there with her arms open like she wanted to hug her boy, but at the same time, Timmy was like, mm-mm. I'm gonna wait until you dissipate and go away. And then I'm gonna run to the furthest Winchester to get a hug.
LAWell, he did tell her he said, I love you too, which I thought was sweet. Oh, yeah. She didn't say it, but yeah, you know.
BerlyHe did say that. Yeah. And then she just like poof. Yeah. And that was a cool effect too. Her like dissipating to finally move on. And then Timmy just runs right through her ghost cloud into Dean Winchester's arms. And I was like, Sam was right there. I would have been really offended if I was Sam.
LAUh Sam didn't teach him how to handshake. You're right, you're right, you're right.
BerlySo Robin is just like, okay, so I dodged a bullet. Like I'm really happy in this small town. I'm just like loving my life.
LAShe's like, talk about closure.
BerlyRight. Because I I thought I wanted to see the world, but I actually love just running this diner stadium right here where I'm at. And um, yeah, I didn't need none of that bullshit in my life. So I might like give you a sloppy toppy when you're in town, but otherwise, good riddance, Dean Winchester. And Sonny is just like, oh my god, thank God. Are y'all gonna clean all this shit up before you go? Or that was such a like I don't have Ruth or Jack anymore, and those two boys are in the hospital. Like you just leave me here with Timmy gonna help help me out. Because Timmy can't clean it all. And then we do get a flashback where Sam is they're like leaving. And so Sam asked Steen, like, basically, why'd you why would you ever leave? Like, I've learned a lot about what was happening here while you were here. Why would you go?
LAYou weren't thriving, yeah.
BerlyAnd LA literally went, because of you.
LAI did.
BerlyWhich when I said it, I was like, maybe not though, but no, I did not hear a single doubt in your voice when you yelled that at some point I shouted it out and then I was like, oh no, I don't know. But we get the flashback to Dean getting ready for the dance, and he's a little nervous about it. And Sunny comes up and it's just like, yeah, so your dad's out here and he's a lot. But I'm willing to go to bat for you if you want to stay.
LAI thought that was sweet of him.
BerlyYeah, like I will convince him that you need to go because obviously John coming there and saying, I have a job. What I'm assuming that means is I can't hang out in this area anymore and wait for you to grow up a little bit and get a little bit more discipline that I can't provide you. I'm about to have to drive out to California or Wyoming Wyoming, wherever he has this next job. So it's like I have to go get Dean now, is what I'm imagining the scenario to be. Right. So for Sonny to say, like, I'll talk to him and see about you staying here while he goes and does that job and like he can come back or whatever. But Dean looks out the window and he sees little Sammy playing with his little airplane.
LAYeah.
BerlyAnd he's like, No, I'm gonna go.
LAAnd the smile, like he was so happy to see about having to leave. But then when he saw Sam and that smile, oh my god.
BerlyHe missed his baby brother.
LAYeah. And he thanked and it was sweet. He like thanked Sonny and was like, nah, I've gotta go.
BerlyAnd so they get in the episode, and of course, Dean does what he does and deflects. Like, no, it was fine. I didn't care. But Sammy knows how to read behind between the lines at this point. So he just says, Thank you. Mm-hmm. And Dean was like, I don't know what you're talking about. But he did.
LAAnd I was like, God, they love each other so much.
BerlyWe're so codependent. Yeah. This episode was written by Adam Glass. I think he's a New Yorker. New Yorker? I think he's a New Yorker. And directed by Kevin Parks. So gore. I know the goriest thing in the episode was the lawnmower. Yeah. But the MVP of that episode was the ghost makeup. For sure. Holy shit. That startled the fuck out of me.
LAWe were not prepared. It was so good. And then like the dissipating of it, too.
BerlyMm-hmm. And also, even though I wouldn't classify it as gore, Ruth's death scene, phenomenally shocked.
LAYeah, yeah.
BerlyThat was like an ode to horror, that entire scene. That was that was phenomenal. I I really enjoyed that. Did you adore anything?
LAWell, I mean, we talked about so many things we liked.
BerlyUm Yeah, I was gonna say, I feel like we've covered it for the most part.
LAI guess the that little time in Dean's life was nice to see that he had kind of like a little reprieve for a little bit to just be a kid, kind of like a teenager. Yep. So that was kind of nice, I guess.
BerlyI agree. I would I would say this this was damn near a perfect episode, in my opinion. Like I said, the only thing that bothers me is this did not seem like the story of a 16-year-old boy to me. It seemed like it should have been a little bit younger. And the fact that it was only two months. Well, those two things bother me just a little bit. But otherwise, such a good story.
LABut think about it though, like he's he's never like really gone to school, been around kids his own age like that. That's true. So may he probably is a little more behind in his age and and experience around what those kids might have been. Okay, you know? So but but that I I'm my point in saying that is that's probably why you're thinking that. But like, yeah, he's 16, but he's never gone to school consistently, like, never had a girlfriend, or like been in one like one house, you know, for so long and responsibilities with that. So maybe he's that's why it seems like he's younger.
BerlyAnd then he hits that major growth spurt before growing into that guy that had jeans old leather jacket. What what episode was that? Hang on. After school special.
LAYes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
BerlyYeah. He has that huge growth spurt in two years.
LAHey, it happens.
BerlyFacial structure completely changes. It does happen. It happened for Sam too, right? Right. The actor did a good job, uh like emulating Dean, I feel like.
LAYeah.
BerlySo what about the lore?
LAWell, for today's lore, we asked, can a person be literally haunted? And the short answer is yes. Just maybe not in the way the ghost hunters think. The haunted people syndrome is a real thing. Researchers coin the term haunted people syndrome or uh HP S. HP dash S HP to describe individuals who recurrently report supernatural encounters driven by heightened sensory sensitivity to stress, reinforced by paranormal beliefs and the kicker, these uh anomalous experiences often appear to be idioms of stress or trauma. That's not surprising. Dean Winchester, king of repressed trauma, and I'm fine energy, same, same, is a textbook case. But so is Timmy, a grieving kid whose emotional distress was so intense it literally tethered a ghost to his person. Your brain can literally conjure a ghost when you're overwhelmed. A Baylor College of Medicine researcher noted that a sensed presence can be a reaction to extreme or unusual environments that we are unprepared to process, and that the ghosts we see or feel may actually be personifications of our attempts to situate ourselves among deep uncertainties. We can become haunted by our own insecurity, in effect, ghosting ourselves. Dean doing that every single episode. Timmy doing that, he cried out for his mother in an abandoned building and she showed up. So sad. PTSD is basically a haunting when someone Has PTSD, the ghosts follow them everywhere they go, popping up at unexpected times. Even when you know the house is haunted, the jump scare still works. We saw that today.
BerlyOh god.
LATrauma is unfinished business that hasn't been healed, which makes it a challenge to move on. That's Dean carrying 18 years of silence about his time at Sonny's, and Timmy carrying a mother's death he never got to grieve properly. Except Timmy's version had the audacity to also be literally true. And some ghosts really do haunt people, not places. Poltergeist activity often centers around one specific person, with most activity failing to occur unless that person is present. Usually someone who is highly stressed or has gone through some type of extreme emotional situation. Timmy is the walking, breathing definition of this. The haunting didn't come with the farm, it came with him. So this episode gives us haunting and stereo. Timmy dragging a ghost behind him, like an overly protective carry-on bag, and Dean psychologically reliving a life he buried decades ago the moment he walks back through Sonny's door. Science, the paranormal community, and a mental health therapist's essay all agree being haunted by a person is deeply, uncomfortably real. These two just happen to be proof of both of these kinds simultaneously.
BerlyQuote to close it out was from Robin. She said, You look pretty rocking to me, Teen Winchester.
LAOh.
