Hosts Berly and LA tackle "Southern Comfort" Season 8, Episode 6 of Supernatural, and they're absolutely living for DJ Qualls' GARTH in full Texas Ranger cosplay!

The episode starts with a garage murder (blood splooge #61!) and introduces everyone's favorite lanky hunter as the new Bobby Singer hopeful - complete with multiple cell phones and a disturbing habit of licking mysterious green goo to identify it.

While Sam and Dean continue their ongoing spat about Benny vs. Sam's year-long disappearance, a Confederate soldier's desecrated grave unleashes a specter that makes people act on their deepest grudges. Cue Dean getting possessed and finally letting Sam have it about everything, until Garth saves the day with a heroic punch.

Hello , la hey Burleigh . On our last episode , blood Brother , after Benny gets brutally beat up by some vampires , he calls Dean for help . Dean abruptly packs up and tells Sam he needs a personal day . He's going to go help a friend and Sam's , like all your friends , are dead . What the fuck are you talking about ? But Dean said peace and left and he went and helped Benny and they just killed all of Benny's old friends , including the old man who was not old .

Oh yeah , that guy , that guy . We also got to see some flashbacks of Sam and Amelia . Get a little bit more story there . It was my favorite episode so far . I liked today's , but I would say that last episode was still my favorite so far of the season . Yeah , same , but today's was cute . So when I saw , when I saw Garth , I was like I'm so happy LA is recapping this one .

I know that that's her fave . He's just so sweet , but yeah , so this episode . It's titled southern comfort . It's the sixth episode of season eight and it aired on november 7th 2012 . And we start out in kearney , missouri , is that how you say it ?

I think that's right , kearney okay and uh , we see this car pulling up , which I was like what's this shack ? When I was watching it and then I realized it was this couple's garage and I felt really bad it was really dark , though it was hard to see .

Yeah , because I felt kind of , I literally put my my notes it was some shack looking place and then I was like , oh okay , inside the not shack the garage , uh , there's an older gentleman well , you know , mid , mid life , what am I , who cares about his age , I don't know ? Uh , he's underneath the car . You know , they jack it up with the jack a little bit so he can get under there , and he's working with his little socket wrench , the car that we , we originally saw pulling up . This woman is there all of a sudden , which you would you assume it's his wife , which it ends up being , and he's like , hey , hon , you know , can you go get me a cold one ? And she is not in the mood to get him a cold one she's in the mood to make him a cold one .

Yeah , oh that was good , right . I mean she just like walks up and then like he asks her for the beer and she says , why don't you ask sarah alcott to get it for you ? And he looks very confused and she just kicks that jack out of the way and the car falls on the man . The poor guy I was . I thought that was it . But no , mary had more plans . Mary's the wife we learned . And mary decides to get in the car and just drive right over her husband we got our 61st blood splooge of the supernatural series .

As she , she apparently decapitated him I know , but you know I don't keep up with the blood splooges like you do . So it was like this was the first time since we're separated that I actually wrote it in there . I was like oh nice , I know she'll remember , but I'm gonna put it in there . I was like oh nice , I know she'll remember , but I'm going to put it in there , just in case .

I like the name of the barbecue place the the fat max barbecue the sign was really cute , yeah , yeah dean has caught wind of something , um on the police scanner that they have , and sam had just walked out and handed him some food . And sam is shocked that dean found something . He he , I think he even mentions I was only gone about 10 minutes . How did you find us a case in that amount of time ? He also mentioned that deacon hadn't said a word to him since , um , what was the ?

Yeah , you could very obviously see Sam's upset . And so Dean reluctantly asks him if he wants to talk about Benny . And Sam sure does . He says for starters he's a vampire . And Dean kindly mentions you know , I wouldn't be topside . If it weren't for Benny , I wouldn't be here . Sam's all oh , I get , you had to do what you had to do , but why is Benny still around ? And Dean's all oh well , he's my friend . And then Sam throws it in his face Well , guess who was my friend that you went and just killed

valid point . Is it though ? Is it , though , that was his friend because they spent one day together and she killed one monster to save sam ? Dean and benny were together for a year , and how many monsters did benny kill to help save dean ? Yeah , granted , benny got something out of it , don't get me wrong , but he didn't have to help dean escape purgatory I mean , you know , we don't know what happened to amy .

Maybe they remained pen pals , I don't know anyway . So then here we go again with this . You know old argument where dean's all oh yeah , so what ? I got a vampire buddy and you turned your phone off for a year oh my god , we're never gonna get to the end of this it's like it's bad enough that we're bringing up amy again after that got dragged on for so long , but now it's like let's have them both happen .

Let's keep bringing up that dean's mad about the year thing and let's return to amy we really aren't moving .

We're making a lot of progress here , boy no , and then the other thing that sam brought up , or dean brought it up that if benny fucks up and actually kills somebody and a hunter takes him out , like that's on benny , like right , you know , kind of thing , and sam gets so mad about it later in the episode and is like well , I just might be the one to do it , blah , blah , blah , but it won't be you , it won't be you , right , dean getting so mad at Dean and it's just like hi , hi guys . It was literally just last season , sam , that you told Dean that you understood why he did what he did with Amy and that you were kind of happy it wasn't you , because you couldn't do it .

Dean is essentially confessing that he's in the same boat , that he wouldn't be able to do it , but he'll understand if another hunter does .

You're literally like they refuse to see eye to eye , even though they're literally saying the exact same stuff to each other between the two seasons . You just want to shake them sometimes , I know yeah .

So they have their whole little argument and then they head out and it shows them pulling up to a house and there's an ambulance arriving which we know is the house from earlier which I was sitting there thinking an ambulance , maybe just the coroner would do .

But you know , whatever dean explains why this is like because sam is skeptical that this is like a real job for them , but dean kind of just ends up telling him no , listen , this is , this is a kind of our gig . Kevin's in the wind , you're sulking around like a what is it ? A eunuch , a eunuch , a eunuch , a eunuch in a whorehouse , lovely beautiful so yeah , they flashed their fbi that is .

And uh , there is a cop there , a local cop that tries to stop them and he's like , oh , that's interesting , you know , first a texas ranger , now the fbi , which I think one of them mentions , like seriously , texas ranger in missouri . I mean , how did you think that was a good idea ? But I mean , hey , it worked for him , it worked right . And uh , so , yeah , they turn around and it's garth , who is absolutely not in a proper texas ranger uniform . I will let you know . Oh , he's all in a fringe suede jacket , cowboy hat .

But he takes off his hat and like fans oh my god , I said in my notes .

I said , oh guard had a sexy windblown moment with his hat like it was .

I was glad to see him , though I'm actually curious if dj qualls didn't used to model before he was doing acting , because whenever he was striking those poses and stuff just that unique look to , I could totally have seen him being a model . I'll have to google that so I wondered , but not that hard that I googled it , you know well , he's got the height and everything for it too . Exactly , but yeah so we get garth . How excited were you when you saw him I was .

I was like oh yeah , but then I thought it was really cute how excited he was to see the guys .

I think it was Dean said oh , I forgot , he was a hugger . So he's giving them both hugs . Garth mentions that he heard chatter that the boys were back at it after everything that happened last year , and he gets a call while he's standing there chatting with them , from Earl , and Earl is out there hunting a revenant . So Garth just starts rattling off all this advice telling him what to do , how to take care of it , how to hunt him , how to catch him , and the boys both are kind of looking at him suspicious , which I did not get this at all . It did not even cross my mind . I just like , oh , he's just being helpful .

Sam asks if he's the new uh , bobby , and then as soon as he said it I was like oh , okay oh , I see I liked when he opened his jacket and there were like the multiple cell phones in there too that was kind of a call back to bobby's wall with all the yeah I know .

but dean is like shut your mouth about it , like he just can't believe he's there . He's like absolutely not . And Garth says , well , yeah , bobby's gone . You guys were at M&A M&A , yeah , mia , mia , and somebody had to step up and take care of things and kind of take Bobby's place . So they turned to the guy that Garth had been interviewing . We learned that that is Scott Liu and it was his two parents that were in the unfortunate car incident that happened in the shack garage .

Sam goes and finds out there's no EMF , no sulfur , as he expected , because he's skeptical . This has anything to do with what they do . But Garth , the new Bobby , is so insightful and he's like hold up up . I mean , this happened last night , so that means the EMF may be cold by now , and forensics was in here , you know , all over the place . They might have , you know , washed away the sulfur or gotten rid of it . When he was saying that , I kept thinking , well , what about all their other cases ? When they showed up the next day ? And then there was the EMF for sulfur . But anyway , oh .

But as they're standing there chatting about this , garth steps in something with his cowboy boots on and it's a green goo . The guys are asking what is this ? Ectoplasm gum , what , what , what could it be ?

and garth reaches down , takes a swipe with his finger and licks it , and I was disgusted I was also very confused , because we got a very good look at it and I'm like where the fuck did y'all get gum that doesn't look like gum . Yeah , that's a big old piece of what is that ? Who would have had that in their mouth ?

and then I found out garth garth would garth would have I I mean who would swipe something off the ground or their shoe , and like I mean , come on and then here's the thing it's not the first time he's done that , because as soon as he licked it he was like yep , it's ectoplasm so that means he's knowingly tasted ectoplasm before in order to be able to identify it yeah , gross , and not just on my part .

The boys were pretty disgusted by it . And while he's standing there he gets another call . Chester had a name carved in his chest that , uh , spelled out alcott , and the corner's best guess was that mary's fingernails carved it into his chest after she killed him . Yeah , so they go to question mary and she is handcuffed to the bed in the hospital and she tells them you know she did . All she remembers is she went to get groceries . The next thing she knew scott had found her . I think she was on the ground of the driveway and chester was dead . And I think sam

Jeff's Bloody End at the Store

asks you know , is there anything , anything else that you remember ? And she says there's bits and pieces , but for the most part , oh , I have to say that Garth's kind of snickered when she said bits and pieces . Not , not cool , garth , I missed that . I missed that . Oh my God , yeah , he kind of like softly chuckled and I think it was . Who was it ? Dean like gave him a curt little yeah .

Shut up man dean , like gave him a curt little . Yeah , like shut up man .

Oh my gosh , oh , I noticed dean do that , but I didn't connect all the dots .

Oh my god , that's funny that's funny .

So she remembers uh , the smell of burt rubber and an uncontrollable rage , just like she wasn't herself at all . And so g , g I keep putting garth in my notes as g , so I'm like . So g says g , asks her if alcott means anything to her and dean very much notices there's this shift in like her arm , kind of pulls on the handcuff that she's connected to and almost like puts her hand in a fist almost . She asked first what she had it to do with any of it and she tells them that mary and chester were steady in high school for a few years but then they had this one big fight and he took uh sarah alcock to prom instead of her . Which , wow , chester , yeah . And she tells , tells him that uh , sarah had one night with him , she had 37 years with chester . You know it can't compare , although she shouldn't have anything to do with it .

But sam ends up asking if she knows if alcott sarah is still alive . Alcott , sarah , sarah , alcott and mary says as far as she knows . So after they talk to mary , the three boys go to a bar to kind of regroup and make a plan . And garth asks dean where he was in the last year and dean says oh , we'll save that for another time . Garth is like not letting him . He's like no , no , what happened ? And dean finally says okay , you know , I was in purgatory . Garth immediately asks well , how'd you get out of there ? And sam drops .

He's very dramatic , drops his fort and turns his whole body toward dean I was like man sam sassy sam again , yeah , and uh , dean perfectly deflects and starts asking what was up with all the hillbillies around . And don't they know the civil war is over . But garth says it's kind of a tricky subject in these parts . It's missouri . They were a border town at that time where it was half union , half confederate . Sam asks , uh , garth , how he knows all of this . I love garth's like I went to college . And they both just look up at him like that's , oh , that's it , that's how you know . Sam thought he was the only hunter who had gone to college and they both just look up at him like that's , oh , that's it .

Right , yeah , sorry , sam , but he also did go to dental school and I like that . He said that's where he got his first job . Dean jokingly says let me guess the tooth fairy and Garth's face . Yeah , when he said , I thought oh he's , he's very upset about something . Didn't think it was really going to be the tooth fairy , but sure enough , uh , garth's first uh job was the tooth fairy and he said he felt really bad after he ganked him because he kept calling the tooth fairy him .

It was making me think of that episode with jesse , where there was the tooth fairy in all pink with the big beard and all that yeah yep , yep , yep .

I , as I was watching it , I feel like I kept trying to think of that , but I couldn't quite remember it but now now I do , yeah .

So then in the next scene we see got drive up to this little grocery store and he's on the phone with his wife and says he's getting his mom's stuff to take to her to the hospital . And we see this guy walking into the grocery store and he kind of half waves it at Scott timidly and then walks in and Scott's all oh crap , jeff's here and he sinks down in his seat so he won't see him , hangs up with her digs in his mom's purse and pulls out an inhaler and uses that before he goes in hang on , did you say ?

that guy waved at him timidly yeah I felt like he was like oh , was he ?

yeah , well , I think at first . I , I think he was at first , but then he was like , and then it got like really awkward . Maybe I don't .

He seemed real eager to talk to him , and so whenever he came running up to him in the store , I was just like dude , take a fucking hint . He didn't wave back at you really like come on also . Just fyi la . If I ever like , if you ever come walking up to me and you have green stuff coming out of your ear , I'm gonna , I'm gonna comment on it , I'm gonna be like , what the what's going on there ?

I would expect you to no one's same no one acknowledged it a single time during this entire episode yeah , but there was this massive green fluid coming out of people's ears .

Yeah , yeah , it was a little odd . After scott walks in , he goes straight to the coffee pot , which is a full coffee pot that you see

Sarah's Sweet Tea and Flashbacks

LA 18:05

at the gas stations , the little glass ones and jeff just pops out of fucking nowhere and he's all oh hey , man , I heard about your parents . I'm really sorry . You know , if there's anything you need , anything I can do , just ask . And scott proceeds to take the coffee pot , throw it in jeff's face , while yelling at him to give him his money back , and jeff is just burning and falls to the floor where scott grabs a shovel he just starts to go at , or jeff on the ground just stabbing him with a shovel , and guess what ?

guess what guys ? 62 , we've got 62 blood splooges . I was shocked , there was two in one .

I was happy . I was like hell , yeah , I figured you would be . We got blood splooges . We got a rock song , an actual rock song in this episode . I was like , okay , I thought it was hilarious though that in . I don't know if it's the next scene or not , but whenever Sam and Dean like show up to this crime scene and they're looking at this bloodied body on the floor , it like shows the bloody body and like pans up to Sam and Dean and the music and background is like , like , like , like .

Bloody , bloody clothing , all this blood everywhere . I was like what is happening ?

I'm gonna have to go back and look at that . So scott throws the shovel aside and looks into kind of this . I guess it's like a security mirror , one of those big ones that are always in the corners , and he sees into kind of this . And so the boys show up , of course , as fbi , to this location and they find out , or they see that the word Sussex is written in blood on the one of the freezer windows out the outside of it . Garth is there . He says he's talked to the cops . Lo and behold , he steps in some goo again and they go and talk to Scott , or I think Garth went and talked to Scott and told him that he just felt red hot rage and he doesn't remember anything else . So the guys step aside after questioning him , and that's when dean asks if garth is wearing bobby's hat , which he was , and as garth is saying yes , uh , that they worked on a ruger case a few years back and he left it in the back of his car , so he took it as a memento , dean just snatches it off his head yeah , right off guard's head , and I say that's not how you wear it and I'm like how ?

yes it's not like he was wearing it all crooked or something like he was , it was a little to the side .

I think so , yeah , I could be wrong , but I think somebody's just being emotional .

Oh for sure yeah , uh , but the local cops come over and say that the surveillance video is ready , but it's kind of screwy and it shows scott , but it's like where his head is , it's just a bright light kind of . It's not doing the weird flashy thing and all that . Garth suggests from here they should go talk to sarah alcott , who goes by sarah brown now and sam says great , I'll go talk to sarah . You two go see what you can find on sussex , and dean is very visibly not happy about this plan sam very visibly is happy about this plan .

Oh my god , yeah he just kind of walks off with a little his little smart step .

Yeah , his hair was looking good in this episode . I thought he looked real good .

He looked real good in this episode . In fact , I had it paused at one point and my uncle came in and was like what's this show about these ? What just beautiful boys like ?

yeah , pretty much all right , sarah alcott , I have some uh commentary on that . Oh okay , good , she was all like this , like oh , like chilling , yeah , like uh-huh and then she was like so I know , you didn't just come here for my sweet tea .

Oh my god , I did not realize . I knew she was being kind of like I did not catch that that's exactly how it happened .

I will not be releasing this video , guys , that show was only for you , la , it was good , it was good , it was a good reenactment I'm just saying I understand why , when sam left this place , that he had a flashback to that night , that he got some real good sex from amelia .

Anyway , back to you well uh , in the conversation sam has with sarah , uh , she said she heard about what happened to chester , so sad and that , um , yes , they did it in high school and that they went to prom , or when she went to prom with that tom cat , as she called him she also was like I wasn't a good girl , if that's what you mean .

Oh , I think that sam , that's when sam is like that's it . And she tells him that after prom she thought her and chester were going to be hot and heavy . But it just wasn't meant to be , because a week later he and america , he and mary , eloped and over the years she saw them at picnics or gatherings around the neighborhood . But mary apparently kept chester on a pretty short leash and sarah moved on , but apparently mary never did from this little lover's trying right , holding a grudge that long , yeah , and never learning that that anger was actually towards her husband .

Sarah didn't really do anything , actually yeah I mean damn .

Sam ends up asking sarah why she thinks that mary did this . Sarah says I guess in mary's mind sarah was a reminder of chester's betrayal so that yeah , so , like you said , sam leaves and has this flashback to when , uh , he's in bed with amelia and she admits to him about her husband who died in Afghanistan , and thought they were going to be together forever .

But then one day he just went and enlisted , didn't talk to her about it , nothing , and he took off and she got the call . You know that he had passed , and then all she saw around her was pity and and there were reminders of him everywhere , so she just had to get out of there .

That's how she ended up at the same hotel as sam I'm liking the continuous thread of you know that dean is very much demonstrating ptsd from essentially being at war for a year and him and benny's relationship which we learned is very representative of brothers in arms . And now we have amelia demonstrating , you know , the wife who's still at home and having her having to deal with grief and and all of that other kind of stuff . I'm liking this continuous theme yeah , I agree , it's good .

So after the flashback we are back at the other motel with garth and dean , and dean stops garth from grabbing for another beer and reminds him that the last time he drank a beer he had to pick him up off the floor . Garth like happily , giddily , calls him an idiot and dean dean is like no , no , no , bro , you don't say it that way , you say it in anger , not happy , not happy . And garth asks uh , if any of this kind of animosity has anything to do with him . And sam , of course dean tells him it's none of his business . But garth , so sweetly , is just saying you know , you seem a little tense around each other . Dean says we're fine , can we get back to work , let's ? He's just completely deflecting her use . And garth starts to speak that on that bobby was their person . But dean slams his beard down dramatically and tells garth that he's never going to be bobby . So he just needs to stop . Just stop doing it . It and Garth .

I loved it His face . I mean it went from like sad to mad . And he tells him you know , bobby belonged to all of us , not just you and Sam . He said I'm just talking , I'm just taking what he showed me and trying to do something with it . That's all Just trying to do good with it .

That's all just trying to do good yep , I love that garth had his journal . I like imagine how many of his books garth went and got , because garth was not this knowledgeable about monsters when we last saw him right . So he's been studying like he's been going to work I love all the implied context there with what garth has been doing .

Loved it dj and dean both did really well in this episode , just relaying their emotions just with their faces , especially Garth . But I think Dean in this moment kind of softened a little bit , even though he was pissed like a minute before , but softened and I think what he tells Garth to look in the bourbon drenched book of Bobby's and see if he can find something else that can get them the hell out of there . And Garth was just like , oh , all of a sudden happy-go-lucky , he's like I'm on it , yeah , Like even though he was really pissed at him a second ago .

There was an unspoken apology there and I think Garth got that , yeah yeah .

And Dean dean , out of nowhere on his computer , finds out that sussex isn't a who but it's a what , and it's this business that went bust a year ago and that the guy that scott had killed , who was jeff , was his old business partner that ran the company into the ground . Sam calls to say sarah was clean , besides sleeping with uh chester on prom night she gave me some sweet tea , don't you slut .

The Specter and Confederate Penny

it seems like people who are holding grudges are the ones , or the people who are holding grudges are the ones , doing these murders . But dean asks how that adds up to being a ghost , and Garth searches in Bobby's book and finds out that the green goo that he so eagerly tasted equals a specter , and a specter is an avenging ghost . It possesses you , finds whatever betrayals you feel and then forces you to act upon them . To act upon them . Bobby put in there that the last vector he encountered rose shortly after someone desecrated a nearby grave . So garth quickly googles it up .

LA 28:28

It wasn't google , but I didn't know what it was that he was using for search bar at that time and he finds out that three days ago there was a local grave that had been desecrated . And then garth says this could get a little awkward , and everyone's confused by how that could be awkward , going to the cemetery , to a desecrated grave .

represent all of them , all the confederate unknown soldiers , dean kind of like , gives them a little shit about how , oh , you learned all about all of this in college , huh ? But garth tells him , no , he actually learned about it in civil war reenactments . And I love that for guards , I do too . But there's a guard that is standing at this tomb and garth says that he's just ceremonial , he'll be gone by dusk , so they return after . After the sun goes down , garth gets them to help him open the tomb and the body is still there , very much intact . The clothes have deteriorated but you can still see it , and especially the buckles and the buttons and everything are still there the vintage guns and everything the vintage weapons yeah , garth is mentioning how valuable some of those are , so it's strange that these people didn't take it .

LA 30:02

They just proceed to burn the body , think that you know .

Berly 30:05

Job's done sam did find that string in there . That does end up being important later , was it ?

LA 30:10

oh it was a string , I thought it was a hair . No , that's when they go to the library and the redhead lady was there . I was like , oh , it's her , she's got something to do I can totally see how you got there okay , and then , and then I was like , well , what an idiot . I mean , she had nothing to do with it it was a string .

Yeah , it was a string , okay , well , that makes a lot more sense now .

LA 30:33

So once that scene's over , we flip to uh at the sheriff state or the police station . This sheriff kind of tosses this folder onto another guy's desk I'm guessing it's his deputy , I can't remember . He just asks him to write it up for him , doesn't say please , thank you nothing , just tosses it on his desk and walks off yeah and you can see that this cop , uh with it on his desk , doesn't appreciate it and he kind of leans over and sees Scott in his cell and he's gasping for breath and saying he needs his inhaler it's an evidence .

LA 31:09

So this guy goes and gets the package that the inhalers in the keys and just pours it into his hand , grabs the inhaler . We don't see him touch the thing , do we Not ?

Berly 31:20

until the flashbacks , feel like I saw the penny fall into his hand , but I can't remember if that happened here or whenever they did the flashback of showing us the path of the penny .

LA 31:31

Yeah , because I don't , I don't think I saw it , I , but I do remember the flashback , but anywho , not a big deal . My whole question in this episode is did scott make it ?

right I think he was I think he was at the hospital , I think they , I think there was a conversation about him being at the hospital whenever they , whenever they were all at the station .

Good , because I was worried about yeah because the cop clearly didn't run over to give him his inhaler instead he went to the gun room , got a shotgun , went over the sheriff's desk and told him to uh , why don't you go write your own reports ?

And then just shot him in the head which there was a blood splooge , because we saw the after effects of it all over the wall from that . But because we didn't see it happen . We're not counting it .

Okay , good point , good point . Boys show up to the cop station and Dean immediately notices there's some green goo on the tape dispenser of the sheriff's desk , notices there's some green goo on the tape dispenser of the sheriff's desk and sam thinks okay , there must be an object that must have been taken from the body . You know that it's still connected to . Once again , the deputy doesn't remember anything , but he does remember that the cop who found him on the floor , carl , took his gun and walked away and said something about going to the hospital uh-oh , maybe that's who went to the hospital .

Maybe it wasn't scott see I okay .

Now I'm worried again . I think they just dropped the ball on scott . Poor , poor scott . Dean gets a little revenge of his own here and says that garth and sam can go look into the unknown soldier and dean's going to the hospital .

Berly 33:02

I was like okay , dean I see , I see you .

LA 33:05

So carl is in fact at the hospital . We see him roll up in his big old truck and , sure enough , he's got the green goo coming out of his ears . He sees his , uh , the little reflection , like scott did , in his uh , rear view mirror of his car , same flash of the dead soldier . Once again , garth being the nice guy he is , he and sam are walking up to , uh , where are they walking ? Oh , to the library . And garth goes and tells him that you know , he's here for him for anything he might need . And it seems like you know , these boys are just talking to each other but nobody is listening , right , which very observant there . Garth , very good on on you . And so , in this moment , sam has another flashback to abigail , who can't abigail amelia .

LA 33:53

Oh my god , I knew I wrote that wrong at some point in my notes . Oh my god , okay , not abigail amelia amelia is trying to break things off with Sam , which dumbass .

Berly 34:06

Yeah , real angry , Like after all that rough sex that we had . Whenever I told you my story and you looked at me , I'm choosing to see pity instead of sympathy and I'm out of here .

Yeah , and I like that . She like he's still in bed . He's still in bed and she's like grabbing her . He's like I've got to go . This isn't working . And she leaves and sam's like in the bed , just hovers up to his waist , just still looking after her like what just happened oh , going back to the first flashback , real nice how she didn't have a shirt on , but sam did are you kidding ?

I was like I guess it's because I was trying I was trying my best to take all these notes and I I missed the most important right now .

I do love my sammy in some white . I do love my sammy in some white , but like that was not the scene for it and we didn't get a good look at amelia . So maybe she didn't have her clothes on , but the way she was laid it looked like she didn't have a top on yeah , but he had on a white t-shirt stupid .

After this whole flashback and garth , you know , trying to be a buddy they go into the library . Then it shoots back to carl and he is after one of the nurses at the nurse station with his big old shotgun

Possessed Dean Confronts Sam

LA 35:16

and he's he is very angry and asking this nurse calling him up and that he stole second , why'd you call me out ? And he shoots him but thankfully there are no bullets in the gun . Dean is right there , takes the gun , punches carl . They have a little bit of a tussle where carl is super strong and just throws dean across some desk or something . Then they're at . We're back at the library and this librarian has told the boys that Corporal Collins of the Union shot and killed his brother Vance , who was a Confederate . They were local boys and Vance , like on his dying breath , ended up swearing revenge , vengeance , I'm sorry , vengeance on his brother .

Berly 36:06

It was like the only book in this whole library that had any information about this and even that they were saying it was a theory , that it wasn't necessarily for certain , it was just a theory , correct ?

LA 36:16

then we go back to the hospital and dean tries asking for carl , for the object he's trying to get to Carl through this specter . But Carl , like , has a hold of Dean and smells him , sniffs him , scents him , and Dean's face is just what the fuck ?

Berly 36:41

I rewound it and watched that a couple of times . It was cracking my ass .

LA 36:46

It was so good , oh yeah . So he like sniffs him and he says , oh , the specter likes him , right , like he can smell the revenge on him . Back in the library they notice in the picture of this book that they're talking to the librarian about that Vance is wearing a necklace . Picture of this book that they're talking to the librarian about that vance is wearing a necklace and she tells them that it's a penny on a string , that a lot of times when the families or when someone was going off to war or to fight , that they would give them a penny for luck , for food or a drink , so they would never be needing anything . And sure enough , carl has this penny and decides that well , I guess it's not carl decides it , but the specter decides it's Dean's turn and Carl presses the penny into Dean's hand . So and we know who he's got a lot of built up things against .

Berly 37:38

Really who ? He never talks about it . You didn't notice .

LA 37:43

I thought it was so obvious . Sam and Garth show up at the motel and Dean's already sitting there , his phone's ringing , goo in the ears , gun next to him , and he cocks the gun at Sam and says he should have looked for him while he was in purgatory Kind of listing off all the stuff we've been hearing for a while . Then it flashes back to three days ago and I did like this whole montage of how they did did this whole kind of quick storyline .

LA 38:13

I really liked how they filmed it . But it starts in the tomb with the teenage boys . One of them takes the penny , then goes to use it at the local convenience store , where then we see it's passed on to mary from change from her transaction , to where we then see scott in the truck before he goes to kill jeff reaches into his mom's purse and then , of course , then we know that the evidence bag everything fell into carl's hand , and then we know that carl presses it into dean's hand . And then we're back at the motel and dean's still bitching at Sam Garth goes to grab for his gun , but Dean sees it , points the gun at him it's like no , bro , like back off .

LA 38:52

He tells Sam that you know he never wanted this life . He's deceived Dean ever since he got in the car . And then Dean starts listing off deceit after deceit and sam says , hey , you know , we all make mistakes , buddy . And dean says , oh , no , no , no , not mistakes . Those were choices . Those were choices that you made they kind of get in a fight , but will garth block sam first right ?

well , he kicked sam's ass . Sam was like bleeding from his nose and everything .

And that's whenever Garth finally decided like fuck this , I'm stepping in between Because he realized that Dean wasn't going to shoot him because he wasn't the one that the vengeance spirit was trying to get after Dean is about to like shoot Sam anyway . Like push Garth aside and shoot Sam anyway and Garth punches Dean . Oh , that's right .

I forgot about that , yeah , which I love . It was awesome .

And I loved that he was like ow afterwards , like that he stayed in character . But like how badass of Garth and that made Dean finally drop the penny and then come to his senses .

Yes , yeah , yeah , yeah , okay , yeah , because I love that garth was able to pick up the penny , because he doesn't hold grudges , oh my god , I loved , I was gonna yeah , I was gonna get to that part yeah oh , I'm sorry , no , no , no , no , um , but once again , after you know , dean's back to normal .

Sam , once again is throwing benny at dean's face . Dean tries to tell him you know , benny was more than just a friend , he was a brother to Dean . So after all that , they're kind of walking back to the motel or at least Garth is and he's telling him he took a while to melt down the penny , but he got it taken care of , it's gone now . It's not going to cause any problems . And I think I can't remember who asks him how he did it . But Garth just says that he lets things go with his yogi and his , uh , sega Genesis . Yeah , you know , he's just cool cucumber . He lets things go , doesn't hold a grudge . And he tells Dean that maybe he should try it out , right ?

LA 40:58

Garth tells Dean to stop being , uh , an idgit and that Sam and Dean are all they have . That's all they have . I don't know why . I said it so easily . But then Garth I loved , he was like I'm coming in .

LA 41:15

Coming in for any hugs . I was like , oh my god , dean very sweetly gives Bobby's hat back to Garth and puts it on him . While Garth is about to drive off , he gets a call about a Wendigo and he starts listing off what he needs to do and then , just , you know , takes off . And then Sam has another flashback . He approaches not Abigail , it's Amelia , okay , and that he doesn't pity her . And you know , he tells her about how he's lost . Dean , they're , they're so similar , they're going through stuff . He still wants to this to work and she lets him back in .

Good job , good idea she already had that second glass sitting out there on the table oh my god , yeah , just waiting , so she she already agrees , she , yeah , she's good , she knew .

LA 42:04

But yeah , they both agree that they're going to talk about their loss . And so sam um tells about dean and she says you know he was .

Or sam says he was up front , but dean had secrets , of course , benny I have a theory why sam was so mad what I think that , even though he hasn't been verbalizing it very much , I think that Sam has sincerely been feeling super fucking guilty , thinking that Dean was all by himself and maybe actually feeling like , oh fuck , did I abandon my brother by himself to die and all this other stuff . And then it turns out that he wasn't alone . He actually had somebody by his side basically the whole time , somebody who he's now calling like a brother and all this other stuff . I think that's why sam's so mad , that that's why sam's feeling like fuck you , because he's probably been beating himself up , even though he hasn't really been demonstrating that . That's my theory anyways . That's my theory .

Oh , I think you're definitely right but yeah , when the boys are back together , that's when sam is like saying he was up front , dean , but Dean had secrets and that Dean needs to just get over it or Sam's going to be gone and Dean admits that he hears him and Sam . That's when , like you were saying , sam mentions he might be that hunter one day that comes across Benny , and Dean says you know , we'll cross that bridge when we get to it and Sam's all yeah , you keep saying that .

And then it ends yeah , okay , this episode was written by adam glass and directed by tim andrew , so gore .

We got the two blood splooges . Yes , those are . Those are definitely the goriest of things , I will say . Um , I also liked the zombie makeup on the confederate soldier me too . Yes , yes , it was looked nice , that looked good , so not super gory and , like I said , I still I I have . You have to go back and watch that scene where they're showing the bloodied body and it's just like okay , I will , I will it cracked me up .

I think it was new kids on the block , and so whenever the second one went off and dean made the joke of you know , if hammer starts going off , I'm gonna I don't know what he said , but he like made some joke about like if I hear hammer , I'm gonna do something yeah and then at the end , whenever he gets the call for the wendigo , sure enough it's mc hammer .

Oh , and I tried to do like avenging specter , avenging ghosts , and it kept trying to tell me about vengeful ghosts and this and that , and I'm like no , we've already fucking covered vengeful ghosts , we've already covered . It was trying to get me to do revenant and so I thought that was weird , that garth actually had a call telling somebody about a revenant and then this was trying to tell me revenant , and I'm like no .

So I had to fucking dig deep to find something that specifically talked about specters . I went all the way to Sinister Coffee and Creamery blog . Oh , you heard that right .

It means frightening ghost from french specter , an image figure ghost 16th century from latin spectrum appearance vision or apparition okay , so that's why I kept getting ghost , because that's basically what it fucking is .

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of specters is how they are described in different cultures around the world . In ancient Mesopotamia , it was believed that ghosts yeah , they use those words interchangeably because it turns out they're basically the same thing , but still , we're just going to keep pushing through could appear to people on Earth if it was thought that they needed to right some kind of wrong . In ancient Egypt , Egyptians believed that if individuals were properly buried with adequate rights and continually remembered , the spirits of the dead could be of great benefit to the living and watch over them throughout their lives . Greek and Romans believed spirits appeared either in dreams or physically , usually having to do with some problem surrounding their death . So I kind of liked that with Mesopotamia to right some wrongs , that's where we're bringing in the avenging aspect , and then from Egypt , properly buried , that's when we're

Specters have been connected with specific places , sometimes for a variety of reasons . Modern day ghost hunters typically explore places that are suspected of ghost hauntings to try to make a visually documented connection to what oftentimes is experienced through physical senses . Recently there has been amateur video footage collected of an area where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought , Long thought to be haunted . The area in and around Gettysburg , Pennsylvania , saw the largest amount of casualties during the American Civil War . Along with outdoor areas , houses , brothels and hotels are also sometimes haunted . Specters have long been a part of human history . As we have evolved , so has our understanding and views of these supernatural entities . It has only been a recent undertaking of trying to find evidence of the paranormal . With the evolution of scientific discovery and technological advancement , is it really any wonder that we have ended up here ? People aren't expected to just believe . They are challenged to through recorded investigations and evidence collected through a variety of mediums and that's what I got on Spectres .
