Ellie, welcome to denim wrapped nightmares, Tipsy Exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series, episode by episode,
LA:over drinks, we'll discuss the lore the gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.
Berly:I'm Burleigh, and I'm a new fan of the series. I'm
LA:LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get Tipsy.
Berly:Hello, LA, hey, Merle, today we have another bonus episode, an interview with someone who was involved in the makings of season six and season seven, or the gamble era. I'm very bummed that I didn't end up making it. I know you had a family emergency come up, but I was glad
LA:that you recorded the zoom so I could see all your interactions and everything.
Berly:It was a hoot. It was, yeah, I tell you I was not ready. I was not ready. I felt like I was on a first date. I had a blast, right? I know I
LA:was like, I'm bummed and kind of jealous. Like, I mean, granted, we know I don't necessarily talk that much in the interviews, but still, like, he was awesome. Well,
Berly:why don't you tell our listeners who we are talking to this week? Well,
LA:today we well, you interviewed Rick worthy and a little bit about him. He is a native Detroiter. I said that weird Detroiter graduated from Southfield Senior High in 1985 and then from the University of Miss Michigan in 1990 He then moved to Chicago, where he performed at several prestigious theaters, including Chicago dramatist workshop, the Goodman theater and Victory Gardens theater. He has played five different characters in the Star Trek franchise, appearing in 14 episodes of the various spin off series and in Star Trek Insurrection. His first TV appearance was break dancing on the dance contest TV show Dance Fever. In 1985 he and his brother Tim were billed as the floor masters. He was nominated for a 1995 Joseph Jefferson Award for actor in a review for the colored Museum at the Victory Gardens theater in Chicago, Illinois. Rick's trademark voice is distinctively rich and deep. Rick's father is a retired United Auto Workers executive, and his mother owns and operates Studio One, a photo restoration company. Rick lives in Los Angeles, California. Well,
Berly:here is my interview with Mr. Rick Warren, as I'm sure you heard on our podcast, our gimmick is that when we talk about the show, we focus on lore, gore and what we adore. Yes, I love that alpha vampire, of course, has made our door list for both of the episodes we've seen you in thus far. Oh,
Rick Worthy:bless you guys. Thank you so much. Yes,
Berly:we were very happy at the end of There will be blood whenever you said, See you next season. So we were like, is he coming back? And so we're gonna get to see him again. So we're looking forward to that.
Rick Worthy:Yes, exactly. I have you seen the entire 15 seasons? No,
Berly:well, I I've seen more of it than where we're at, but it was several years ago, I jumped into the show in the middle of the series. I was so confused as to what was going on, so I don't remember much. Got
Rick Worthy:you okay? I don't want to give any spoilers then, because, okay, there, there is another appearance on the alphabet. Yeah, good.
Berly:We figured, because you survived, you survived at the end of the episode. So we knew he's coming back. He's got to be coming back. So speaking of the Alpha vampire, so many intimidating villains come across as very grandiose and large, and you kind of took a more subtle approach to it, which we loved. Thank you. It was wonderful. How did you develop the Alpha vampires, demeanor, enunciation of the words, his mannerisms, right from where did you draw inspiration? Well, before
Rick Worthy:I answer your question, I'm going to take a quick drink of my favorite red wine in the world. One maybe one more.
Berly:You're our first guest to take us up on the suggestion of cocktails. Encouraged. Come on,
Rick Worthy:I'm hoping, I'm hoping that at some point we can creep in the word ratings, yeah,
Berly:you know, I will say you, you definitely will take the the trophy on that radio voice from Richard spay Jr. So every
Rick Worthy:now and then I will intermittently be saying rating, okay, and you can, you can say it too.
Berly:Oh, funny. I love that
Rick Worthy:so much. I um, it's one of the best questions I think I've ever received in terms of, how did you create the horror of the. For that. If you're given a I've said this so many times, if you're given the chance, the wonderful opportunity, to play a vampire, you should always say yes. And in this case, the first of all vampires, essentially, frippy said this essentially he's Dracula. And I love Dracula. The film on Bela Lugosi is wonderful. I've re watched it over the years, even before. Supernatural is one of my favorite horror performances ever. But I had to really sort of forget about all of these wonderful performances over the years, of wonderful actors who I love, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, you know, all these amazing actors who have played, they've stepped into the fangs, you know, and have played Dracula and sort of forget about it and sort of block it out of my head, and then really approach the key for me, and I've said this before, the key for me was asking myself one critical question, How old is he? And I've asked this at different Comic Cons, you know, here in Europe, and people always say, well, he's probably about 300 years old. And I said, No, he's way, way, way older than that, like, way older than that. Some of the clues are in the script, because he says, When your kind first huddled around the fire, I was the thing in the dark. I loved it. Oh, the same, same here. And when I read it, you know, it's like you get chills when you're reading something that's really good, you know. And I was like, oh, man, really fucking good man, you know, like, I like, you can, you know, they have thought about, the writers have thought about who this guy is, who the character is. And that was my way in, you know, really, that, that sort that one line. And I said, well, and I started doing all this research, I'm sure, you know, there's tons of research about monsters online. And I went straight to vampires. And the vampire character sort of appears in almost every culture, and is really an ancient sort of character, you know. And I said, Well, he's really old. He's not just a guy in a cool cape, you know, in fangs like he is, has been on the earth for hundreds of 1000s of years.
Berly:I couldn't help but think of you. Hope this is going to be a compliment that I intended to be when I went and saw nose for Ratu, yeah, I will say I'm happy they didn't have you like decomposing, even though you were so old. I'm happy that, yeah, they kept everything intact. I couldn't help but think of the Alpha vampire. Whenever I was watching that film, The look for the Alpha vamp. Did you have any input on that? Was that already kind of designed ahead of time?
Rick Worthy:I had zero input on the costume, but I was what I was sort of expecting was that he would probably be wearing a suit, and hopefully with a dash of red somewhere. And so they, they like, when I, when I went into for my fitting, I was like, yay. Like, the, you know, the red tie, just a bit of red on, maybe in the pocket square, I think it was, and I think they even folded the pocket square sort of, kind of looks like fire, like maybe flames or something. I think that's so critical to have the character that's assigned you dressed the right way. Yeah, you know, really has to, I think it's, it helps me get to where I need to be emotionally and mentally as the as the character.
Berly:And I love that even though he is ancient, he's still a modern man. Yes,
Rick Worthy:he's incredibly, exactly, he's incredibly up with the times, current, with the times. He's seen every he's he's seen literally, the rise of civilizations around the world, you know the oncoming of technology, and you know everything. He's a gentleman in terms of how he carries himself. He's very composed. Because he's so old he's seen it all. He like, nothing really scares him at all, like he's, you know, he's like, whatever. It just doesn't frighten him. And I think one of the things that was key for me was because I said, Well, he's really, really, really old, like, hundreds of 1000s of years old. He doesn't really have to move around a lot, you know, he's just, sort of just is very still often. But one thing I wanted to do was, I thought that would, one of the things that would be key to making him really scary was when you look at his fingers and the fingernails, which they they glued on to me, and it made it really hard to go to the bathroom. I just remember, like, I think guy guy B was Guy B, who I would love to chat about, if we can, is, you know, of course,
Berly:we just interviewed him on Friday. Oh, you
Rick Worthy:did. Oh, man, all right, tell him. I said, Hi, I love guys.
Berly:He spoke very highly of you. And when we told him we were actually interviewing you in a couple of days, he got very excited. So,
Rick Worthy:I mean, I have been in this town and in this industry for 30 years this month, so I moved to LA when I was 28 I'm now. I'll be 58 on Wednesday. Happy birthday to me, and I have worked with so many people, and Guy B is easily my top three directors I've ever worked with. Oh, awesome. He just knows how to talk to you and tell you just the right kernel of information to get you on that right. Code, you know, and, and it's critical, when you play a character like the alphabet, you're trying to find it the right level of fright for the character. And guy, I remember, we did one take, and then guy was like, Okay, that's good. Now, just just tone it back just a bit. And he was, he was spot on, you know. Then we did take two, and he was like, That's it.
Berly:Something I noticed about him in our interview is I would ask like, Was that directed? And he would always phrase it as there might have been a discussion. He never, he never said I directed it. I told him it was always we might have had a discussion. It was always that. And I thought that was that spoke to his character and how he sees working with actors, yeah,
Rick Worthy:for sure. You know, he is a super pro, you know. And I think it's hard to talk to actors because, you know, we by nature, we're just very sensitive people. We don't want to feel, you know, criticized and all these things. But at the same time, you have to be able to collaborate with a director and find the truth of what you're trying to do, you know? And that's the thing, you know, it's like, okay, you come to work and you on the show and it's successful and everybody, it's a smooth running machine, and then you're thrown into this episode, and you have to immediately be believable and frightening and get along with everybody. You know, it's not easy. I can't imagine. Yeah, yeah, exactly. But, you know, it's your job as an actor to get in there and establish character as quickly as you can. And I do a lot of homework before I even get to work. I know who the person is before I say the first word on camera. And that, for me, is critical, you know, like Muhammad Ali, who's one of my heroes, he said, he said, I've already won the fight before I got into the ring. You know, I just have to get in the ring and execute. That's how I feel about my work as an actor. And just to go back to the fingernails of the Alpha van, who does have a name, by the way, it's not just alphabet. I can, I can tell you what it is, but later, little bit later on, okay, okay, okay, I'll text you or something like that. I think I posted him once on Twitter when I had Twitter, I don't have Twitter anymore. I wanted him to be frightening and incredibly fiercely intelligent and regal. But also I wanted his fingers with those fingernails. I had this idea that they're constantly sort of moving like this, you know, like slightly moving like they're alive, like little snakes. They're sort of independent of each other and of him. They're part of him, but they're always moving, always sort of alive. And then the idea I had about him was he sort of the alphabet is sort of like a snake is frightening because it's coiled up in the corner or under a bush. You don't know it's there until you take a really good look, and then you realize it's looking at you, you know. And then it'll strike if it wants to or if it doesn't want to. I wanted to put that into who he is.
Berly:I'm gonna pat myself on the back that I totally caught, that you did. I loved that touch. Loved Thank you.
Rick Worthy:Thank you. Thank you. I think the I think the fingernails helped, because I remember when guy said, I can't wait for you to see these fingernails. Fingernails on I was like, these are some gnarly, nasty ass fingernails, man, you know, like an inch long, you know, and chipping and gray and dusty and, ah, you know, nasty, you know, but, but then that against this extremely well dressed character,
Berly:family matters, your introductory episode. Well, ish, right? The set looked amazing, this massive cage. How long did it take and what was the process like? Because it seemed I found out in behind the scenes discussions, things are a lot simpler than what I think they are in my head. But it seemed like there was a lot going on in that cage with you, like the long, giant IV tube and all the constraints. What was that like being in that set? I think
Rick Worthy:the props and effects departments did a brilliant job with that whole vampire in the cage scene. Everyone brings that scene up because it is really the first time you see the character, and it's really scary. I think their idea was like, well, we want you to think that we've got him caged, but he knows that it's just a matter of moments before he's out of there, and you can't really cage him down, you know, he's going to find a way out. It'll be fast and quick, and you won't even see him move. You know, I think that was probably my first day. Yes, that was my day one of filming in Vancouver on Supernatural. I was so excited, and a guy was just incredibly nice to me, as was everyone, you know, Jared, Jensen, everyone. So I was like, man, these guys are going to spoil the hell out of me, man, the crew was great. So guy said, Okay, we're going to, you're going to be sitting in the cage, and they're going to have this thing linked up to you. You know, and they're pumping you with dead man's blood. And like, you can't, you can't really get out of there, but maybe you can. You're like, you know, like, like, he's just your character is really sort of waiting for that moment for someone to make a mistake so we can get out. You know, it's sort of remind reminds you of um, Hannibal, Lecter, Tik Tok, planning, ace, tick tock. You know, you know the great Anthony Hopkins. I wanted to, well, we, I remember we were, it's a very elaborate scene. You have to shoot it from different angles. And, you know, everything get up close ups and wide shots and the whole thing, I'm a team player. I don't mind sitting down for if you need me to sit down in the chair for two and a half hours without going to the bathroom, I'll do it. I think. I said, Okay, we're gonna, we just need to take a 10 minutes so we need to reset a light or something. And he said, Rick, you want to get up? And I said, No, I'm good. I'm gonna, I'll just stay here, you know,
Berly:Yeah, cuz I thought it was gonna be like a whole process to have to get you in and out of there. So, yeah. So,
Rick Worthy:yeah, I thought, I thought they did a great job of really establishing the, you know, the first time you see the alpha map. Yeah,
Berly:I loved it. Yes. So another question, you scratch slowly away at one of your constraints. How did they do that? Did they just come up there every once in a while and file it down like, what my mom
Rick Worthy:that's, that's this. That's the one part which my mom told me. She said, the second I saw you scratching the leather things, she said, I turned the TV off because she said, You're my sweet boy. You're not, you're not a monster. I'm like, Mom, I'm an actor. That was that. That was Guy B, he said, he said, start doing this on the on the leather straps. Just make it creepy as hell. Every now and then he's like, you know, scrapping, he's, he's finding a way to get out of there. But the nails, I think, if my, if my memory serves, serves me correct, they glued on nails, and then they did something where they took one of them off. And then I think in that scene, you see, you see the nail grow? Yes, I think that was post production CGI, where you see that nail come out. But then we did another one where I'm just, I have the nail on, and then I'm just scratching, scratching away. Like every couple of seconds, he just scratches. And I thought that was really cool, because that's totally what the character would do. Just, he's always out thinking everyone that's his the key to him as well. He's 10 steps ahead of everyone.
Berly:My co host and i La, we decided from the get go that he went with them willingly because he was bored and he was curious what they were up to, and that that's why he was there. He was there to find out what they were doing, that he was never there against his will, and it was just when he was bored of being there, he was like, Okay, time to go. Well, that's
Rick Worthy:that is fascinating. Wow. You guys should write for supernatural. That's like, that's really, really, really good. I love. Like, in other words, you're saying is he will, he willingly allowed himself to get captured. Yeah,
Berly:he knows that these alphas are getting kidnapped. He knows that something's going on. I mean, think about it. How many hunters were dead outside the mansion and all that stuff. He could have taken on them all if he wanted to.
Rick Worthy:Ratings.
Berly:I But I think that goes with your 10 steps
Rick Worthy:ahead. Look, but wait exactly in fact, he's 40 steps ahead in his in terms of his strategy. That's how, that's how he's still here. He's, he's learned over all these 10s of 1000s of years what to do, what not to do. You can predict what you're going to do long before you can, you know. So I think that's his key, really is, not only is he supernatural, supernaturally fast and strong and all those things, but it's his intellect that is, I think, one of the key components of his survival. So in hindsight, I may have to rewrite my bio for this character and say, You know what? Maybe he kind of did this kind of espionage thing, where he's like, I'm gonna allow myself to be captured by the boys Sam and Dean and then so I can figure out what the fuck is going on. That's what we
Berly:said, like in our episode for family matters. I was like, it was a Sunday afternoon. He was bored. He was like, why not? Let's go see what's what's going on with these humans. I love it. Let's go see what this group is doing.
Rick Worthy:We need, we need to, like, write our own version of that episode and then shoot it and then put it on YouTube. That'd be amazing.
Berly:We already have a couple of ideas for a self enclosed Alpha Vamp episode. I'll pitch them to you, because we have a whole spin off idea that we would that we're hoping supernatural. Does I love it? I love it. I'm going to ask you a question that you may or may not have an answer to, but it's something that's been plaguing me in a previous episode live free or twi hard, the alpha vampire transmits like this psych psychic message to all the other vampires. And it's this montage outside this house, and there's these two little girl twins that are vampires, right? Who are they? What's, what's that about? They have not come back up. I don't know.
Rick Worthy:But when I when I saw that, when I was at home watching it on TV, I was like, Oh, shit, that's scary. You don't want to, you know, if you're in a hotel or your apartment building or wherever. Her, and you go out into the hallway, and you see two twin girls staring back at you, run. You should probably run. Yeah?
Berly:It's like they were like, okay, you know that scene in The Shining that's really scary, but how can we really fuck somebody up? I'll give them fangs, yeah,
Rick Worthy:that'll fucking make you right? That doesn't make you run. You're not from the planet. I'm out, yeah, I'm out. I was curious.
Berly:I was curious. If they explained it to you when they were filming it, what the story was, I'll
Rick Worthy:be very honest with you. Burley, I can't recall. I do know that I really love the look of it, because it was in black and white. Oh, I love it, yeah. And then you see the Alpha vamp, sort of, I know we're doing a podcast, but you see the alphabet, sort of, they kind of zoom in on his face like this, you know, like, very slowly, like a nice, tight, extreme close up, and it's like, whoa. You know, what is going on? He does send out some sort of psychic signal to every vampire in existence. You know, it's, it's something that he does. It just wasn't, it wasn't readily, fully explained to me, who these two little girls were are. But you know, I know it all connects to Dean. And you know what's what's about to come? Okay,
Berly:we'll, we'll keep waiting. What we decided in that episode was that we were seeing it from Dean's perspective, and Dean didn't complete his vampire onboarding, right? So Dean doesn't know how to interpret it, therefore we're left being like, yeah,
Rick Worthy:yeah, totally, exactly. You're right. You guys are right. It is from Dean's perspective. And you know what's going on. I'm trying to remember the dialog. I think the alphabet says to him, let's see they have the alphabet sitting down in the cage. And then he says, You have no soul. You were once my child. And I think he says that to to
Berly:Dean, right? Well, Dean was the vampire before Sam doesn't have a soul, right? And so, right, he tosses Dean aside, and is like, I'm more interested in this Sam
Rick Worthy:guy, another guy, right, exactly, right. You have no soul. Something, something different about here. We can, you know, you can. He can smell it. Can literally smell it and sense it. You know that it doesn't that Sam doesn't have a soul. It's really such a cool show. I've told Sam, and I've told Jared and Jensen this, you guys realize you do have, like, the coolest show in the world, right? And I've told them that, and they're like, Oh, yeah. Well, thanks. I think I, I mean, I think I've been around long enough where I've been on other TV shows and where I've been the regular on the show. I was recently on the show called The Magicians, and, you know, it was amazing experience. And we shot for five years up in Vancouver. I knew it was a terrific show. Sadly, we didn't make it past five seasons. But five seasons is great nowadays, right? You can make it past three seasons. That's awesome. If you can go to five, that's great. But supernatural has been on for, you know, what, a full 15 years, I think, yep, we have 15 seasons to get through. Yeah, not many people can say that, that they have been around that long. When you get into the mythology of what supernatural is about, it's so, freaking cool. And you realize this, they can kind of do anything on this show, man. They can do a Japanese game show. They can do, you know, they can do a Western, you know, like they can interweave the only sort of different genres into the series. Not many TV shows have that freedom.
Berly:We're having a lot of fun with it so far. Okay, so there will be blood. I had on here to ask you about the constantly moving, scratching and all that. We've already talked about that, but we got to see a little bit more action from alpha, and there will be blood and family matters. He was mostly in the chair, like you said. We didn't get to see him escape, right? And then he kind of had Sam up against a wall, but we didn't really get to see him do a whole lot, right? And this one we did, we got to see him fight Nido Martinez, who was playing Edgar levithan, and we got to see him toss Dean across the table like it was nothing. You had to look like it was effortless, but obviously the effect of what you were doing had to be big. So what was all that like? It was awesome.
Rick Worthy:You know, it's like, you know, you're on a cool show when the lead actors, Jared and Jensen, like they're excited to see the guest star me do some action, like they were so excited to they stood by. In fact, Jared pulled out his iPhone, stood off camera, and recorded it because he wanted to record it just for himself. He was like, came up to me, said, Man, this is going to be so fucking awesome. Do you want to you want me to record it for you? You know, like, and I was, I was like, Man, I love this guy. Just don't get that, you know, that genuine sort of kindness actors who have been on shows for a few years, sometimes it just gets very jaded. They kind of forget that there was a time when they didn't have anything. These guys, they are so humble, and their feet are on the ground. They still love it. And I'm older than them, and I love being around people like that. So So Jared took out his iPhone and recorded the scene where I throw Dean Jensen across the table, and he showed it to me after we did the first take, and he was like, man, it's so fucking awesome, you know? And I was like, Oh, no. Thanks, man. You know, I do love stunts. I do love any chance to do action. If I remember correctly, I believe Jensen, stunt double, stood in for most of the throwing stuff. And then they put in Jensen when you don't see his face, it's probably not him, okay, you know, safety first. But I thought it was cool. It's a very cool vampire thing to do again, I tell all actors this, or anyone, if you get a chance to throw someone across the table, you should probably do
Berly:it. Did they have him in a harness? Do you remember? I
Rick Worthy:think they had him wired and then with like a, like a underneath the, like his jacket, and then there's like a wire coming out, like in the back, if I remember correctly, and then they have, like a, like a crane, okay, that they can lift up a 200 pound human being, and then swing them with enough force, like they'll start to jump themselves. And then the crane takes it from there, okay, then swings them across the other side of it, because it's a standard size, massive Citizen Kane, kind of table you got to be on the other side of that table in two seconds, you know, two and a half seconds. So they did it, like, I think on the first take they got it. It looked amazing. Yeah, it looks amazing. And I thought that was such a great Dracula alphabet thing to do, which is just take one hand, take the motherfucker and toss my boss, baby, yeah,
Berly:like it was nothing like You're annoying me spotting the fly you are
Rick Worthy:exactly, exactly you are. A gnat, a fly in my realm. Get out of the way. You know,
Berly:yes, you may have already told me about it, but just in case, what is a favorite early memory from working on Supernatural? Oh, my God,
Rick Worthy:coming to Vancouver, which is a city that I love so much. And my dog buddy and I lived there for five years when I was working on Supernatural magicians, and also the Man in the High Castle. It seems like everything shoots in Vancouver. So you know supernatural X Files, you know Vancouver, Vancouver, Vancouver, the flash, all these different TV shows I fell in love with Canada and Vancouver, even when I wasn't working on something, I would put buddy, my dog buddy, who was my now my angel. I would put him in the back seat, and we would drive from LA to Vancouver and just hang out for a few days, you know, and go to dog parks and Petco and, you know, just kind of just just be just kind of get away. I've always loved working in Vancouver. A couple of times in Toronto as well. I would probably start with that, like just kind of being filming in Vancouver has always been great. And then probably the second thing was, Jared, I'll never forget this. Ever i remember i The last thing I did on Supernatural, which is coming up after There will be blood. It rains a lot in Vancouver. You probably knew this. I'm sure you know it's, you know, you're really in the Pacific Northwest. So, and I happen to love the rain. Being from Michigan, and then later, me and my brother and his wife, we moved to Chicago. So, like, we, you know, we know all the four seasons, you know. And I love rain myself. It was a rainy day in Vancouver. I just landed at the airport, and I had to, they wanted to bring me in to start my work like, I believe that same day, usually you get, like, a day or two to chill and get ready. I said, Hey, I have no problem with that. Let's do it, you know. So the van picks me up, takes me straight to set, and there's and it's raining in Vancouver, and there's nobody around except this one guy, and he's outside in the rain riding around on like a little mini bike, and it's Jared, six foot eight. Jared, six foot five. Jared, I'm like, six, two and a half, six foot three on a good day, Jared, I have to look up to Jared. That's how big. He's so handsome and kind. And he was out there. And then he approaches the van, and he's got this big ass smile on his face. And I'm like, this motherfucker. I love him. I get out of the I get out of the van, and he hugs me, and he says, Dude, welcome back, you know. Oh, man, you know. Like, who does that man, you know, you know, that's so sweet, so sweet, you know. And I think in some kind of other world, like he's my brother or something, you know, like we just, we just get, we're like, we kind of just connect, you know. And I think he's an awesome person, and I think Jensen is as well. It's just that most of the stuff I did was was with Jared, and you'll see in the next episode after There will be blood. It's mostly me and him,
Berly:yay. That's a wonderful memory. Where was everybody?
Rick Worthy:They were inside on the soundstage because it was raining. Got it
Berly:that makes sense. That makes sense. So is there anything about supernatural that I haven't asked and I should any other stories that you're wanting to share with us?
Rick Worthy:I think you have to mention the amazing conventions that supernatural. I didn't even know about all of this until someone when i. Again, when I had Twitter, I think it's x. Now it's called x. Years ago, when I, when I finally got on board with social media, I was getting a lot of hellos from fans from supernatural and, you know, you know. And I'm, you can probably tell I, I can. I love to meet people and chatty and all those things. And this is who I am as a person. Someone asked me, one day, Rick, are you going to come to a supernatural con one day? And I said, I would love to, but like, what is it like? I didn't really, honestly understand what it was, you know, and then later I understood, I understood that, oh, there are actually cons that are done where it's just for that TV show. And then, sure enough, one day, I got a phone call. I think creation entertainment. I don't know how they got my phone number, but they called me as I was driving on Sunset Boulevard one day, and they said, Would you like to come to New Jersey for for one of our events? And I said, Sure. What do I need to do? Oh, just, just get on the plane come, you know, and sign some pictures and things. I said, Sure. And I had no idea what was about to come that weekend, and I had so much fun and met all these wonderful people who love supernatural, and you discover that these fans, like a lot of them, are friends, and they've met at conventions and and then someone said, someone asked me, was I going to go to karaoke night? And I was like, Well, probably not. I mean, I don't really saying I probably, probably people think that I do. And then I did not go to karaoke night, but the next time that I did a supernatural con, I went to karaoke night. And I totally get it. It was so much fun. I totally, I'm sure you've been to these conventions we have Yes. So I cheers to the conventions, and it's you can't the fandom is amazing. And I think you can be literally anywhere in the world. And if you're wearing a t shirt that says supernatural, or it has a picture of the boys or or baby people like, Oh my God, that's like, my favorite show, and you have an instant friend, even if you only connect on social media. You know you met someone who was part of your huge, dysfunctional but yet still beautiful family. All right, so
Berly:our last question, are you familiar with the show American Horror Story? I am okay. Are you familiar with the spin off American horror stories? I am not what they've done with American horror stories. They've done this spin off called American horror stories, where it is a series of self enclosed episodes that go back and revisit a location from American Horror Story, or go back and tell a story about a character that was briefly in a season of American Horror Story. And we want very much for supernatural to do something like this, because we feel like, because it's so focused on Sam and Dean, right? We want to, we want to know more about all these other characters, though, or what happened to this one place that they went and visited, what have you, right? If they were to do a spin off like that, and alpha vampire was picked for his own episode. Well, what would you want that episode to be?
Rick Worthy:For sure, an origin story. I think it would be, I think, really awesome seeing him even 500 years ago, where he was, wherever he was, you know, in this world, kind of vampire he was, and all of that, you know, because everyone evolves. And I think it would be so cool to see him, like learning, learning adapting, learning, learning adapting, you know, like as the world changes itself, that would be so freaking, I think, insightful into the kind of person, direct vampire he is, and being the, being the first monster in the world. You know that there's so much there that needs to be explored. I think it would be pretty damn cool, for sure, pretty, pretty amazing, for sure. Yeah, I sort of had this idea just for a minute. I had one a friend of mine who I love dearly. He's a director and he's an artist and he's an animator, and he can if you have a concept for a commercial, for example, he can draw it all out for you by hand or his computer. Either one doesn't matter, and he's old school. He can pick up a pen and ink and create, you know, any graphic novel or anything that you just the idea that you have. So he, he came up to me, we work, collaborated on something I was producing a long time ago. And he did, did, just made this incredible trailer for me, uh, idea I was trying to pitch about an alien invasion, actually based upon a book that I read by Octavia Butler. He is a fan of supernatural himself. And He came, my friend Joe came up to me and he said, he said, Man, you know, that character that you do on Supernatural, he's so freaking cool, but there's so much more that needs to be done about this character, you know. And then I was like, Yeah, you're right, man, you know, he says, he says, he says, why don't you write something like, you know, like, create something and put it online, you know, and or pitch it or something, you know. But I haven't. I have not. I just. Totally agree with you and my friend Joe and other people I met as well. We
Berly:came up with multiple episode ideas,
Rick Worthy:321, ratings.
Berly:I'll never get tired. So similar to yours, something we thought of was taking Interview with the Vampire and Bram Stoker's Dracula and meshing them together. That Alpha vampire gets interviewed by Bram Stoker. Wow,
Rick Worthy:brilliant. I love it. Write it. Writes that. Write it right.
Berly:Write it. I just come up with the ideas. I'm not a script writer, okay? Tap Ben Edlund, get get Ed land on it. Okay,
Rick Worthy:then produce it. Produce it. Produce it. I would love
Berly:to and then at the beginning of There will be blood. We're told about how the Alpha vampire escaped Crowley's prison. So we were like, well, that could be an episode. How did, how did he get out? Is it the same thing, right? As Family Matters, where he just decided, okay, I'm over this. Let's go. And then the other one him getting to meet Eve, because we really liked Eve, yeah, and we never got to see the two of you interact. I
Rick Worthy:am the son of Eve. You know that the dialog that would have been great. Of course,
Berly:we wanted to see you two interact, and we never got it. So we would, we would like to see that in an
Rick Worthy:episode, you know. So we keep, we keep talking about it. Yeah, exactly, we, I think, I think me, you guy, B and LA, we all need to, like, you know, do another we should all collaborate on something and create, create this and really pitch it. You know,
Berly:I would love to, I would love to, do you have any other projects?
Rick Worthy:I did a movie with Paul Rudd. Sadly, most people know him as just Ant Man, but he's done so much. Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson, who is freaking hilarious, and he's actually from Detroit, my hometown. I know they were at Toronto International Film Festival, and it did really well. And I think they're going to be at South by Southwest this Sunday night. The movie is called Friendship. Friendship. Okay? It's about two guys who are neighbors. One guy has been in his neighborhood for years, and then this new guy moves in across the street for him, and he's like, the perfect guy, like they developed this wacky, crazy friendship, you know, and it's just fucking hilarious. And I, I'm in the movie, and it's, it comes out, I believe, nationwide, in May.
Berly:Oh, nice. Okay, I'm excited to see you in a comedy. Yeah, I'm
Rick Worthy:excited to see me in the comedy, you know, like, you know, I mostly do drama. That's the thing that I love. My agent said, there's this hilarious movie that's really, really smart and really good. Is this indie film, and it's a comedy, and it's got some good people in it. And, you know, I'll send, I'll send this. Send you the script. And I read it, and I said, shit, this is fucking hilarious. You know, nowadays we have to audition often. We have to audition by zoom. I don't know anybody who's actually walked into Warner Brothers or Fox for an audition. Most people audition, you know, via their laptops or their phones. And so I did this audition for the director via zoom, like, 10 days before Christmas of last year, and I'm sorry, of 2023 I was
Berly:about to say, when did you
Rick Worthy:Yeah, exactly, yeah. When did we filmed it? Yesterday. We filmed everything yesterday. It looks amazing. We filmed it. Yeah, we filmed it. I'm like, wait, it is 2025 it is 2025 we are living in the future. Yes, we filmed last February in New York, in the freezing cold, and but it was, it was, but it was great. And I was very, very happy to be there, very blessed to be there. And it was awesome. And so it takes about a year for a movie to come out. You know, they edit, they post, they may do a couple of reshoots, and then they figure out when they're going to release it. So it's so it's on time. I'm so excited to see it, and I just saw a little clip of it a couple of weeks ago, because I had to re record one little line, because there was someone dropped something in the on the stage when we were filming. So you have to go in and re record that line, you know. And I love doing that, because I get a chance to get a little peek. Believe me, it's hilarious. It's very dark comedy. But from what I've heard, it's going to be in the reviews that came in from people who've seen it in Toronto, Toronto International Film Festival. It's going to be great. So
Berly:we will keep an eye out for that. Anything else that you'd like to discuss? I'm
Rick Worthy:currently working on a show, but I signed away my rights to say anything I can tell you that it's about first responders. Okay, I'm so excited about that, Burley, because and LA, hi, LA, wherever you are, it's sort of really hits home. A. Lot as well. We shoot here in Los Angeles, as I'm sure, you know, as the world knows, we have the worst wildfire we've ever had, ever in the history of state of California. And I was here, you know, when the fires began, even though I was downtown, we were all affected. You know, I did not lose my home. I did not, you know, the fires didn't get that this far inland, but I was just about eight miles away from Altadena, Pasadena fires, and then probably about 1213, miles away from the west side, Palisades. And I know, I know the west side, I know Pasadena. I've been to Altadena probably a couple of times, but I know the area, these areas, and you looked up in the sky, like, right now, it's a beautiful, you know, sunny, blue day, but like, just two months ago, you know, at nine o'clock in the morning, there was no sunshine. There was the sky was cloud. It's covered in smoke and ash and ash falling from the sky, you know. And I was like, Man, this, this is totally surreal, man, I have a huge, huge, I've always had a huge love and respect for firefighters, police and military. And I feel truly blessed by God to have worked on a show that that talks about and the lives of these, of these wonderful heroes you know, these the real superheroes in the world you know. All
Berly:right. Well, looking forward to that. Okay, so, final, final, final question, I too, am a Pisces,
Unknown:oh, my God. What? Yes, when March 7, oh, my God. Well, happy birthday. Thank you.
Rick Worthy:Wow. So your birthday was two days ago. Yes, well, happy birthday, Berlin. Thank
Berly:you. Thank you. Now say it like the Alpha vampire.
Rick Worthy:Burly, happy birthday. Oh, one more thing, Burley, are you ready and three and two and one? Rating,
LA:well, I did love that. First up he set the mood with his San Francisco background. I like that he chose it just for the occasion, and that he was drinking wine. I loved it. And he's like, one of the, I feel like he's one of the first people we've interviewed that took us up on cussing, which, you know, I love,
Berly:yep. Oh, well, guy did too. Guy, really, yeah. Remember he said fucking something, and was like, Can I can I cuss?
LA:Yeah,
Berly:oh, oh, that reminds me. Mr. Austin basis actually did take us up on the happy hour. He had a cocktail in hand, and Steve Hein wanted to so Mr. Rick worthy was not the first to take us up on it, actually.
LA:But no, he, I mean, he seemed lovely. I mean, that voice, yeah, he was, he was funny. I was cracking up watching it. I was
Berly:even though guy told us that he was so kind and completely unlike the Alpha vampire I was. I wasn't expecting it. It still caught me off guard. He was just a joy. Yeah, My cheeks hurt after that interview, from laughing and smiling so much. I bet it was great. As I was watching
LA:it, I kept like, I said. I was like, I'm bummed that I couldn't make it, but then I'm also just jealous, because y'all, like, had such good rapport. And I was like, not that I would have given much to the conversation, you know, but, but, yeah, just to be there, he and I appreciated that he mentioned me a few times. That was nice. So, yeah, it was a really good interview.
Berly:You'll be there for the next one, though, we'll make sure true. Yes, if you're interested in donating to help with those affected by the Los Angeles fires. We do have links available on our link tree so that you can donate for Los Angeles Fire relief. And with that being said, quote, close it out. When Sam and Dean showed up at the Alpha vampires lair, the alpha said, I'm going to peel off your faces and drink you slowly.
LA:Sam said, just listen. You need us.
Berly:And alpha said, Oh yes, I am thirsty until next time. Cheers,
LA:cheers.
Berly:Thank you for listening to denim wrapped
LA:nightmares. Follow us on Twitter or Instagram, leave a review and let us know how we can get involved in the fandom. This was fun, jerk. It always is, bitch. You.
