Oh, the battle that brought him down released hundreds of demons from hell went What was it? It was from the hills gate or devils gate, it was what it was the 7am Dean, daddy,

were all there. It cost Sam his life. But Dean wasn't gonna let his baby brother go. So he went and made a deal with a crossroad demon. And it gave him gave her his soul for Sam's resurrection. To seal the deal. She said you have one year to live one year to do whatever you need. And then say goodbye to your Sammy boy. And so this whole year that happened, Sam desperately was trying to find a way to save his brother. It didn't work out. But this I loved how they ended this. It says mind bending venture adventure awaits as the Winchester brothers continue their astonishing Odyssey into the supernatural and their personal Odyssey into dest. My recaps are never going to sound like that. If it was my personal.

Just you and I have talked about like our vocabulary that we we don't use all the words. Yeah. Yeah. So their destiny. So we know that. Sam was supposed to be like, what was it like the Demon King or whatever they were telling him. And then we found out a little bit more about Dean's apparent Destiny this episode that we do. I mean, we don't have all the bits and pieces just yet. I'm still not sure what's happening. But let's get into today's episode. Lazarus rising. It was the premiere of season four, and aerate originally on September 18 2008. So the episode opens up where we actually left off last season. It opens up in hell. We don't see full on the chains and everything that we saw at the end of season three. It's just really close up on Dean's beautiful face. It's just flashing and he's looking around. So we still don't know what was happening in hell. I assume he was still being tortured. Oh, yeah. But then it cuts to him waking up in his coffin. He lights his lighter and is looking around calling out for Sam trying to figure out what's going on, digs himself out of his own grave. When he surfaces, this grave site looks crazy. Like I love that they put a little cross there to marker, little marker in this small forested error, air area. But the trees are all blown down. Like it looks like a crop circle or something crazy,

like a bomb went off right there and everything was flattened in a circle,

which was that about. And then when Dean got out, his clothes aren't torn up anymore. And obviously, I guess his body is not torn up anymore, which fortunately, we get that verified here in a little bit. We'll talk about that more. So Dean just you know, pulls his britches up and starts walking. Luckily, there's like a gas and sip station. Within walking distance.

So it was in the middle of nowhere, but there's this gas in step. He breaks in, drink some water, probably the best tasting water of his life, at that point, checks out the newspaper and sees that it says September and we find out later on. It's been four months. So he's been buried for four months. It held for four months. He gets like some protein bars and puts himself like a little to go bag gets it ready. Make sure that he grabs the best two Asian beauties, because honestly

Good for you. And then he put his shirt down. To lift up the sleeve. You should just take the shirt off. If you needed to look at everything. Just take it off. Right

But he does lift up his sleeve and there's this red handprint on his shoulder. I thought it looks like a burn. What did you say it was like,

Clearly it's a handshake, very raised and raised off the skin and read. And I couldn't tell the way he lifted up his sleeve if maybe it kind of hurt a little bit,

He felt something we all felt something eventually Oh my. So that after he checks himself out, that's when he makes his little to go bag and goes to and then he goes to the register to get some cash. As he's getting cash out of the register the TV turns on. He's just like, What the fuck and he turns it off, continues getting what he needs. And then the radio comes on and the TV comes on right again,

True, true. Hey, he was desperate man. I know. He's in the middle of nowhere, right? What do you want the boy to do? As this stuff is going on electronics are going crazy. There's this high pitched noise that's coming in. It's irritating. It's loud. He runs out he grabs assault. He's trying to salt the door, the window at the door. This whole place is full of windows. I mean, he was gonna have to do a lot of salting to really get real fast. But you know he runs out of time the Windows Start bursting out. There's glass everywhere. He's ducking and covering trying to find some place to hide from everywhere. No luck, like all the windows in this place blow out, so he bails and goes to a telephone booth.

I'm surprised there wasn't like a fancy hotel. bellhop taking them inside.

Do you know? Well, he was touched by an angel like not caressed. Hello, like whatever. Okay, not yet not. Yeah. He calls Bobby. Well, actually, first he calls Sam. But then he gets that little dude. This number has been disconnected. So then he calls Bobby. And Bobby hangs up on him. And it's like, whoever this is, I'm gonna kill you if call here again. Because of course he doesn't believe it's Dean. He's been buried for four months. Well, he bet he helped bury him. Exactly. Yeah, we find that out in a little bit. Dean hot wires, a car that's just sitting out in front of this gas and sip that was closed that no one was at? It was an old car. I'll give it I'll give it back. Yeah, it was it was an old one. And he takes off. I have to say the scene. Like there was no dialogue. Other than him calling out for Sam whenever he first woke up in the coffin, and him calling Bobby and trying to be like, it's me, Dean. There was no dialogue in this first, this opener to the season. I loved it. This episode was directed by Kim manners. So we had some really nice close ups and everything but I just I really loved the opening. Like this immediately was just having me like, rubbing my hands together like Okay, let's go.

It was a good starter. Yeah. Oh, yeah, it set the tone for sure. Yeah,

really excited. So he goes to Bobby's, and Bobby answers the door. Dean just looks at him being all fucking adorable.

like that whenever they pulled themselves out of a grave. I mean, even though he was filthy, his fingernails were dirty and all the other stuff like it's still just freakin gorgeous. Oh, like I don't

It'd be a challenge. Yeah, for sure. Jim Beaver. I also really loved him in this scene. I loved his facial expressions that man can tell a story with his facial expressions alone. Yeah, so good. And I love that Bobby was able to hold his own with Dean.

Uh, well, I feel like that's I mean, muscle. What is it? Muscle memory? Yeah, like I bet that just like same thing kicks in. If somebody attacks somebody from your back back in the day, you know,

and I don't think Dean was actually trying to obviously he was more trying to restrain and blend. Yeah, he wasn't really trying to fight Bobby. But Bobby, he can hold his own and a tussle. Yeah, I think so. So I enjoyed that little scene because whenever Bobby answers the door, of course, he assumes this isn't Dean, this is something else. In order to prove he's not a shapeshifter. He's not a revenant. He's not all these things that Bobby is claiming him to be, like, in the midst of all the fights.

So deep. Finally, he's like, hold on, dude. Like, look, and he takes a silver blade and he cuts his arm to prove to Bobby that he is him. So Bobby holds him and like the tightest squishiest dad hug ever. It's so cute. And then after they separate and they started trying to talk he just splashes holy water on dead space.

I like that like they're standing face each other Dean's talk to him. And like you don't even see it. It's off camera. But like just goes and Dean space. And Bobby's like sorry.

So of course, the first thing Dean asks is where Sam, Bobby explains, you know, we buried you. It's been rough. Sam insisted we bury you that he was gonna you were gonna need your body whenever he figured out how to get you back. And then he was real quiet.

before that, remember he scolds Bobby. Oh, yes. You were upset about I was like, No, I liked it. Like he was like, you were supposed to look after him. Bobby, like, you were supposed take over my job. You failed. And Bobby's like I mean, come on, man. I tried.

Dean calls the phone company. He knows what alias Sam is using. He knows the fake social security number. He figures it out. I guess they'll just turn on the GPS. You know, this is an old school Winchester method we've seen done before, and immediately finds out where Sam is. I did pull up my heartstrings during this moment is when Dean commented on all the bottles. Oh my god. I know. Bobby was just like, like I said, it's been a rough four months. Well,

I thought it was funny. Well, not funny, but like Dean's like making a joke out of it. Like, oh, you know what's going on with all these bottles Bobby parents out of town. You had a party. And like it just cuts the tone of him with Bobby like reiterating Diem. Been a rough couple of months since I had put you in the ground.

Not just put them into the ground. We notice whenever Dean came out of his grave, his clothes weren't shredded anymore. Oh, and see that? Yeah, right. So we were like, oh my god, they put him in new clothing. Well, I think even when they buried him

They are immediately like this motherfucker. summoned to demon. He repeated the cycle that we were telling him not to do. And he really didn't learn shit from the trickster. He's just he's just gone and done it again. So they say okay, well, let's go let's go meet up with Sam. They find Sam and like a no hotel Hotel. kind of situation where there's like hearts on the doors, mirrors on the ceiling

But I I just expected further the amount of romanticism of their brotherly love and I don't mean that in like a sexual way. Right? Just for that we've seen all these moments over all like these last three seasons, and just obsessed with each other. They're literally everything to each other. And to just be like a good hug. Bobby And Dean confront Sam about like, okay, so how much did it cost is what they asked, and Sam was like, the girl, I don't pay. Or he said something like,

I tried, I shopped around. I went to every dealer in town, no one would deal. I knew you were down there suffering being tortured for months. And I couldn't do shit. Not a tear during that conversation. But it was still a little Sammy. It was like it was the more it was more Sammy than what we'd seen so far. At least, you know, like, come on. Bobby And Dean believe him and ask him like, what the fuck have you been doing since then? Sam said, Well, when I realized I couldn't save you. I decided the next best thing was revenge. I've been trying to hunt down Lilith. I tailed some demons here in town. And I thought maybe Lilith was around here too. So I'm just basically like, vengeful Sammy running around. I think he said, Didn't he say something about getting a little payback? Yeah. So it's kind of that Mystery Spot, Sammy a little bit. Yeah, it was intense. Because at the end of season three, Ruby was saying, Hey, Sam, you're still psychic. It's just dormant right now. If you give me time I can teach you how to use that shit. What did she call them like a supernatural bomb or something like that? Oh, yeah. So Dean's asking, like, have you been playing around with that? And Sam says, No, it was basic. You're like you're dying wish that I not do that. Which we find out by the end of this. So another lie? Oh my goodness, what's happening to her boys?

And Dean says his loss and she says might be your game. Ooh, wink wink.

I have to say like the smooth the positioning of this whole conversation that transpires right here is cute, because she's like, she was bending down. He saw it she looks over it. It was like maybe your your gain and she walks off screen. Yes. And then what does Sam say? She'd eat you alive right? And then she walks back on the screen. Like does a little cute shoulder to Sam. You're invited to grumpy

And you can tell Sam is pissed that he's just now seeing that.

Pamela is doing her chanting and doing all her stuff. And she hears that this entity is cast yell. So she's got her hand on Cassie yells handprint on Dean shoulder, and it's talking to him. And he's warning her to go back and shit shaken around. Things are getting intense.

Well did Bobby say like, maybe we should stop like he did. He knew something. This wasn't right.

She was like, I've almost got it though. And so she kept going. Got a peek at KCL, who was apparently so brilliant and bright, that he burned her eyes out of her school.

It was like, I don't know how to explain the flame that came out of her eyes. It was just so white and bright. And then as they're going out, like you can see the drips of blood underneath.

Not only that, but the candles on the seance table, lighting up into torches, kudos, special effects department. It was so well done. Bobby immediately grabs Pamela because she's falling to the floor and she opens her eyes even is like I can't see oh my god. And Bobby's like call 911. So Sam runs a call. 911 Things didn't end well for Pamela. She's still alive. We do. Yeah, we do find that out. She's in the ICU. She's alive. But she doesn't have her eyes. Yeah. Bobby goes with Pamela to ICU. That's how they're getting their updates and whatnot about how she's doing. And in the meantime, Dean and Sam, go to a diner. Dean is feeling really guilty because this happened to Pamela because they asked for her help. Not feeling really great about what just went down. And he kind of says, You know what, we should summon this Cassiel thing ourselves. Sam points out, dude. Pamela's eyes literally just got burned out of her skull because she took a peek at this guy. Like, I don't think we should be summoning it. We don't even know what it is.

So Dan's like, well, then what should we be doing? And Sam says, I followed a group of demons here. Like, let's hunt those fuckers down and find out what they know. As they're saying this as they're having this conversation, the waitress comes over and sits down some pie and just like pulls up a seat and sits at the table with them. Like she was supposed to be there. Exactly. And then Dean says, um, are you trying to get like a better tip? What's going on here? She's like, Oh, I thought I just heard you say that. You wanted to talk to us. And she blinks her eyes and they go black. Everybody in the diner kind of circles around them. And their eyes are all black. So they're in a diner with a shitload of demons.

Yeah. And one of the one of the one of the guys, one of one of the I can't, you'll get it out. One of them goes over to the front door unlocks it. Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, god, they're trapped in here with these demons little intimidating

situation going on here where they're trying to scare the Winchesters. But Dean clocks this game. So as they're talking, and she's trying to be like, What the fuck do you want to know? I'll drag you back to hell did it it it it a dean reads it and figures out that they're just as scared as Sam and Dean, are they they don't know anything either. Right?

Okay, after Sam and Dean kind of confirmed these demons aren't going to be able to help them with their quest to find out who pulled Dean out of hell. They leave. As they're leaving. Sam is kind of insisting. We need to go back and take care of those demons. And Dean says, Fuck no, we're not doing that. We've got one demon killing knife between the two of us. And that was a diner full of demons. Were leaving. They go back to their hotel. I guess Dean falls asleep on like the pullout couch. And Sam like being all shady. It's like sneaking out into the night. goes and gets in the Impala and goes back to the diner. After Sam leaves the room, Dean is woken up because the TV's switching on like all the electronic shit is going on. The windows are getting blasted out the mirrors on the ceiling are getting broken. And there's that high pitched screech going on. See what the fuck is this? Fortunately, Bobby shows up at just the right time, opens the door and get steam out of there before he gets hurt. Which I think Didn't you say that can manners insisted on them using real glass? Yeah. Was it something? Yeah, I

think one of the things about Jensen was that I read was he got injured from one of the episodes

And Sam, again, is sitting outside the diner where all the demons were says that he was hungry and just went to get a burger or something. And he's like in my car, sounds like force a habit. Liars, liars, liars, liars pants on fire all over the place, man. Like it's just insane. So Sam's at the diner, he's decided he's gonna go take care of these fucking demons himself. Dean also lies and says he's going to just get a beer with Bobby. But his actual plan is let's go summon this Casio thing. So they're both doing the idea that the other one said was a bad idea. So there's like a real big disconnect between our brothers right now. Our brothers Sam goes into the diner and the demons are already fucked. Like most of them are dead. Except for the waitress. She's just had her eyes burned out. Sam's like Okay, so you saw what this thing is? And she's like, Yeah, I saw it. But she doesn't say what it was.

She said it remember she said it was the end she was like shut up all of us now by us. We don't know if she means just the demon everybody what?

She's obviously freaked the fuck out. Oh, yeah. But she could smelled Sam's soul. So she's still attacked him. And then Sam like, holds his hand out and telepathically exercises the demon from this body.

That's when it's revealed that this chick from the hotel earlier is in fact Ruby, because when she walks through the door, Sam recognizes her immediately as being Ruby. And also while all this is going on, Dean talks Bobby into just let's go summon this thing. You've got an arsenal in your trunk. I took Ruby's knife. You know, we're good. Let's go do it. What can go wrong? Let's go to a random barn in the middle of nowhere, and paint some sigils and do some shit. And let some in this Castile thing. Sam and Ruby are at the diner having a discussion and she's actually telling him you need to tell your brother because he's going to be pissed if he finds out what's happening. And you didn't tell him back in this random barn that Dean and Bobby happened to find a big barn. It was huge. It was huge. And they painted every sigil and protection spell that they could think of they painted this shit up. They've got all of the weapons and everything from Bobby's car all set out. You know, Sam and Ruby are back in the diner still talking about Dean and whether to tell Dean and whatever, their wires. We know that much. We've got the liars in the diner. Of course Dean has been lying to us about say I shouldn't be so harsh on Sam.

But he's the only honest one. Yeah,

sweet Bobby. So Bobby pulls out some books and does whatever in order to summon Cassiel to them. And at first nothing's happening. To the point that Dean like asks like, did you say the ritual right, like what's going on here? But then the roof is start to shaken and there's wind. It's getting very dramatic. like very high, very vibrational, who something's come and the lights start popping. And the barn doors slide open and let me tell you all you can call my thighs barn doors from now on because the way they would open as he comes walking through, and his tie is like loose and his top buttons on done floppy loved it the eyes the sex hair, the loose tie. It was sloppy sex hair. Come on. Oh, you saw what I saw. He looked real good.

Gotta love it. And they're shooting him. Nothing. He's flinching. Because, like, who wouldn't? But no slowing down whatsoever just continues walking forward. As he walks up, Dean straight up stabs him in the heart with Ruby's knife.

Well, after he told him he's the one that took them from Hell yeah. And I think did Dean said thank you. But let me just stab you.

And he just looks at it in pulls it out. No problem. And then Bobby is about to come up behind him and hit him with a crowbar or something. And he just turns around and grabs it puts his fingers on Bobby's forehead and Bobby just falls down and go to sleep. And I loved the facial expressions.

I was gonna say I loved after he stabbed him. And like it was nothing to him. He looks over a Bobby was like such a weird look. That somebody came up with a crowbar and it was like, it was just too funny. I thought it was cute.

I liked the eyebrow raise as as Bobby fell to the floor, just like yeah, pitch. Yeah, yeah. Just after Bobby's been put to sleep, he lets him know like Bobby's still alive. He's fine. And he talks to Dean and lets him know, I'm an angel of the Lord. Dean doesn't believe him. Cassiel is like criticizing him being like, do you have no faith, like good things happen? Sometimes. that broke my heart when Dean was like, not in my experience. Oh, so sad. So they kind of go back and forth. We did watch the extended scene of this where Dean is asking, like, what Vistage is this? And he says, Well, this is a vessel. He's like, What is it like a holy tax accountant. And then they extended seen he says, you know, it takes time for me to find a vessel that's durable enough to handle me. And he's like, Yeah, I have that problem with women. Oh, my God. Kudos for cutting that out guys. Decision Paciello is explaining like I tried to talk to you, I tried to come see you beforehand. Like a lot of people can't handle my true form I thought you'd be able to, but obviously you couldn't. And that's when we find out at the beginning of the episode. And in the hotel, the high pitch screaming the glass breaking all that that was Cassie l trying to talk to Dean. But he had to find a vessel in order to communicate with Dean Dean couldn't perceive his true form for whatever reason. So he found this vessel, which is apparently a man who prayed for it and is a very devout man. So maybe we'll find out more about that later. Who knows? After they have this conversation. That is when Casio lets him know, you know, I saved you from how because God commanded it. You have work to do this. Basically,

I mean, the eyeballs, I guess, for Pamela's eyeballs getting burned out the demons eyeballs getting burned out. That was a glorious thing that happened. And even that I wouldn't say was bad. It was good special effects. I thought they did well. So what did you adore about this episode LA.

I think I adored that. Cuz we've seen Dean throughout the seasons, just like not really have much care for himself. And so I think when he saw Bobby with all the liquor bottles and seeing that he had a hard time after he left and then probably also seeing Sam and how He's changed to know how much he affected them and what he meant to them. I thought that was like, kind of a nice touch. Because Dean's not the person kind of person that's ever going to think that unless he sees it right in front of it.

Right. That's a good point. I liked the book ends of this episode. I really liked the introduction and the gas station and all that like I said, like no dialogue. I love that. And then cast yells interest in the end.

There was lightning that flash from outside and you could see Castillo's wings shot the shadow of his wings on the barn behind it. And they were huge.

It was really cool. Yeah, this was my favorite character introduction we've seen so far. Def i Yeah, it was so cool. And we were excited for Cassiel. And I'll admit, like when we got like, halfway through the episode, I was kind of being like, the fact like, where is he right? But it was worth it. It was worth it that this didn't happen until the end. I loved that last scene, just edge of the seat. What's going to happen next? Why did God command that Dean be brought back from hell? Like what the hell like what is this work they need to do? What is happening? So very excited to get into the rest of the season and figure out what's going on? Yes. Nice. So what about law?

So we're going to clear up a few things about these angels that are appearing in pop culture. And thank goodness, I know we've all been waiting. Yeah, you're welcome. So angels are not comforting. They're scary. There's a reason nearly every time an angel appears to humans in Scripture, the angel begins by saying Be not afraid. Aside from a thing appearing out of nowhere, their appearance is not what you might think. Angels do not look like that. babies are cute wing people

Yeah, no. Oh, no, I'm sorry. They're described as having loads of eyes. fucking terrifying. Oh, my God and multiple faces. I don't think that's going to be on a Hallmark card. And if it is, take it back. I don't want it. Angels are not dead people who got a promotion. You hear sometimes that when so and so died? I'm sure they became an angel. But no. Angels are beings in the created order, which is quite different from humans. Angels are much like people as people are like dolphins. Okay, so super similar. Sure, we're all made by God. But angels are heavenly beings with different tasks than those given to humans. The Bible does not talk about guardian angels. Angels sometimes help out humans. But they're doing this God's bidding. And God is the real guardian angel. There is nothing in the Bible, which would suggest that angels are assigned a one to one to watch over a particular person. Hmm. cherub him and Sarah femme are plural words. I know cherub. Right? I'm not that familiar with Sara. Sara. Sara. Has it spelled s e r a p h. im Sarafem. Yeah. But I know cherub is like, it's a chair of but this is Anywho.

the will? That's what I think I want to think of a cherub same, right? So these creatures may or may not be angels. Oh, the Bible lists a whole plenitude of orders of created beings. And some people would maintain that the chair bone and Sarafem are kinds of angels. But it's also possible to make the case that there's different from angels as humans are. But in any case, if you're going to talk about them, it's cherub or saref. So it is saref. Okay, and given the uncertainty of the cosmic order, we could at least get grammar right in this round. Oh my god. I like whoever wrote this. Honestly, angels don't sing. They probably don't sing. It says there are scores of hints about angels singing but there's not much in the biblical sense to warrant it. They seem to shout a lot the Shatter in windows and mirrors shout.

Muslim say Gabriel appeared to Muhammad and revealed and he was revealed in the Quran. And legend has it that Gabriel appeared to Joan of Arc as well. Oh, Gabriel is important to all three Abrahamic faiths. This, this last one is angels are awesome. Literally. Next time you have a few minutes read about angels Jeroboam and Sarafem. You'll find yourself in Genesis, Isaiah, the psalter, Ezekiel, Daniel, the Gospels, and Revelation among other places where what other ones are there sounds like
