Berly:

Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares tipsy exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.

LA:

over drinks, we'll discuss the lore of gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.

Berly:

I'm burly, and I'm a new fan of the series. I'm

LA:

LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get tipsy LA. Hello. Hey, hello

Berly:

sexy man, March. Daddy's in town. But before we talk about today's episode, why don't you remind us where we were on our last episode?

LA:

On the last episode, it was the real Ghostbusters, and our superfan Becky, she uses Chuck just use Chuck she uses Chuck's phone to trick Sam and Dean into attending a supernatural fan convention. Complete with fans dressed up as Sam and Dean. A lot of them dressed up as Sam and Dean. One of the activities is a live action roleplay game. But things quickly turned sour after a real ghost appears on the scene. And there are little ghost kids. Ghost woman scalping things. There's there's a lot

Berly:

there was a lot. Yeah, there was a lot going on. While today's episode is titled Abandon all hope. And it's the 10th episode, as well as the mid season finale of season five. Oh, I didn't know. It's weird that episode 10 It's been the mid season finale for season four and season five. Because odd pick like you'd think it'd be 11 Because there's 22 episodes, but it's been episode 10 The past two seasons. Anyhow, it aired originally, on November 19 2009. We open up on a limo parked underneath a Spaghetti Junction of freeway crossroads.

LA:

I was just reading that and I've never heard that mean either. Okay, I thought

Berly:

it was just me. I liked it though. So I decided to go with it. Yeah,

LA:

that's interesting.

Berly:

I didn't get that it was a crossroads until we saw him like burying the 10. And the

LA:

cross or same Yeah. When he was bearing it. I

Berly:

was like, okay, yeah. And then I was like, oh, that's clever. Yeah, it's across roads from the bridges. This dude steps out right into a puddle. He goes and buries attend. And then a man appears. We hear his voice say, Mr. Pendleton, I presume an LA and I both were like yay. It's Crowley, he is there to seal the deal. And at first, the man that he's there to meet is disappointed in who has shown up once he buried the tin. He was like, Um, excuse me. I started negotiations with a young, attractive woman. And Crowley is just like, Yeah, I know. But you, Mr. Banker, sir, are a big fish. And I'm here to close the deal. And the man is like, she's the deal would be sealed with a kiss. And crawl is like yeah, it is pucker up, buttercup. Mm hmm. The man's just like, oh, I don't know. I don't want to do it now. So Crowley calls him out on his homophobia. Yeah. You know, it only means something if you want it to grow. So why don't you chill out? You can hold on to your homophobic bullshit. Or kiss me. And what did you say have enormous, enormous wealth for 10 years. After some contemplation Crowley starts counting down like Going once. Going twice. And the man finally says okay, yes. And then Crowley like, reaches up and grabs him by the back of his Yeah, like nod your head? Yeah. He like reaches up and grabs him by the back of his head and like pulls them in. Oh, who's the lingering? It was hot. Yeah. And then the camera pans over their heads. See peeking out around the quarter, unfold. Castiel he's just like, glaring at Crowley just like I got him. Then it goes supernatural, bumble, Bumble. Bumble, as Castiel still talking on the phone. He's saying I'm not gonna lose them. And he's following Crowley and Dean is like, Okay, what did he call them? Huggy Bear. Yeah. All right. Huggy Bear, and Sam is in the background and like, looks over his shoulder like, hell, whatever Dean says. I love it. Castile doesn't react to it at all. So it's just like, I guess pet names are just the MO for them. From now on, Castile follows Crowley back to like this really fancy ass mansion. But he can't get in do anything about it because there's a Nokian wording all over the building. And they show us the symbols and everything which we saw in I can't remember the name of the episode but the one where the Grim Reapers were getting kidnapped and Pamela showed up and sacrificed her life and all of that. We saw that outside that funeral home those wordings in that blue.

LA:

Why are so many ladies sacrificing themselves for these boys? Right?

Berly:

Like you're hot but no, no. Anyway oh my god, I love it when they say stuff at the same time. Next, it's evening. It wasn't evening at first, but now it is. It's nighttime. And we see a girl walking up and we see her from the back. So at first I was going Who is this? They buzz the buzzer and then they say hey, my car broke down around the corner and I need some help. Please go help me. And then the girl turns around and it's Jo. She has been recruited to help them break into this compound or whatever it is to henchmen come and Buzz Jo n. And they tell her Yeah, come on. Pretty lady. Come on inside. What are you doing out here all by yourself? Giving very creepy vibes.

LA:

Oh, yeah. So the only hope you're ever going to

Berly:

need Yeah. Oh, so Joe says you know what? I'm actually gonna go wait by my car. Nevermind, I don't I don't need to use your phone anymore. And they're like, You're not going anywhere and their eyes turned black. So Joe starts kicking their ass. And then Sam and Dean come in out of nowhere with the demon knife and they just murder these henchmen to kill the demons inside we're done trying to exercise demons. That's not the that's not the game plan anymore. No, just kill. We're just gonna kill them. They break in. And Crowley knows they're coming. It shows him he's made himself a cocktail. He's relaxing, listening to some good tunes watching military propaganda or something on his television, and the lights and everything cut out which why they felt the need to cut the power. I don't know. Like I said These boys have been hanging out with angels for way too. Too much. They've gotten way dramatic with their stuff. They're like we got to make an entrance. He's a demon. He doesn't need electricity to do something to you. But whatever. So then power cuts out it shows Crowley and he just smirks because it sexy self to smokin, banal happy. I got company. Whoo. It turns out Crowley is the one who started the rumors that Castillo was talking about at the beginning of the end, where he was saying, I've heard the Colt is still around and I've heard the demons habit. He started that shit. He wanted Sam and Dean to come get the gun. So when Sam and Dean pop out, and he's walking toward them, and they're just like, ah, we got we got your two other henchmen. And we're holding them hostage. Carly's just like, Oh, hi. And he starts walking forward and CEOs like that there's a wrinkle in the carpet. So he leans over and he lifts it up and sees the devil's trap painted underneath it. Those Winchesters have fast, right? They cut the power broken, painted a devil's trap under the rug, put the rug back down captured the two henchmen. I mean, they did have Joe helping them out. But still was quick work between the three of them stealthy. Crowley was just like, do you fucking know how much this rope is? Love them immediately. He pulls out the Colt and he's just like, This is why you're here. Right? This is what it's all about. And he punts points the gun at them, not punts it. points the gun at them. And at first, Sam and Dean are just like a fuck because by now the henchmen have turned the tables. They're holding Sam and Dean. Right? They've got them held up against their chests squeezing their necks. But then Crowley adjusts his aim ever so slightly, and he takes out his own little minions. And then he says, we needed to talk privately boys. So he has them follow him into his study. And he explains that he wants the devil dead. He said, The Devil thinks that you are just a walking bag of pus. So imagine what he thinks of me who used to be a human 17 Or like, but he made you. And Crowley was like, yeah, he made us to be his henchmen in order to defeat you. So once he gets rid of all of you, what does he need us for? Just like oh, like, making sense. So Carly says so yeah, I fucking want you to kill him. So I'm gonna give you the gun. And they're just like, like, what if we get defeated? He's just like, how about you don't do that. He hands them the gun. And Sam like slowly pulls it up to his forehead and pulls the trigger was like he didn't even try to be fast.

LA:

This is happening right now.

Berly:

Probably of course, didn't even move at all because he knew the gun didn't have any bullets anymore. But I loved how he just kind of sat there and looked at them while they were like, and then he went, Oh, yeah, I guess you guys are gonna need ammunition. He walked around to the other side of the desk, got bullets, toss them the bullets and he pieced out before they were able to load the gun or do anything. And that was it for Crowley I thought we were gonna get to have a little bit more of him this episode, but that's what you Yeah, damn what? What an insurance.

LA:

It was good. Yeah,

Berly:

we cut to Bobby's place. And everybody is there pre partying for the last night on earth because Crowley also told them exactly when and where the devil was going to be the following like few days, they have recruited Ellen and Joe to come help them. So Ellen and Joe are in the kitchen doing shots with Castile Latisha. Lots of shots. So Castile does I want to say it was like five shots in a row. And then he said, I'm starting to feel something. And that reminded me of Lego loss. When they were drinking and Lord of the Rings. He was like, I think I'm starting to affect Oh, yeah. I don't know if that was an intentional thing. I honestly can't remember which came out first. That's funny. It was super cute. And Sam and Dean are drinking in Bobby's office study area, and they're talking about okay, he said Carthage, apocalyptic omens people are going missing. Like I don't think he's full of shit. I think he's probably right. We think that the devil is there. Dean at first is saying so here's what we're gonna do. You're staying here with Bobby. I'm gonna go if I fuck up. We lost a game piece. That sucks. But we can afford to do that. But I'm not going to deliver the devil. His vessel. Yeah. Like you've got to stay here. And Sam was just like, No. We're not going to do that. We're going to stick together. Dean pointed out Isn't that stupid? In st was just like, what have we ever done anything? Smart? Good. Good argument. So they cheers that okay, we're gonna stick together. We're all gonna go. And then dean peeks around Sam, and is watching Joe walk across the kitchen to go get another beer. And Sam is just like, speaking of dumb ideas. Yeah. Dean goes into the kitchen and starts trying to hit on Joe talking about how like, you know, we got we're going to battle tomorrow. A Joe says are you giving me your last night on Earth speech? And I immediately was like, Oh my god. So that is a move of his Well, Joe tells him that she'd rather keep herself respect. Yeah, no, thanks. I so wish they could have done the Luke and Leia surprise are related. Oh god storyline with them. Oh, why? I think that would have been fun. I mean, not after this episode. But if they'd done that earlier, yeah. You know, when there was still the mystery of what happened between John and her dad and like all that other stuff. Okay, I wouldn't have wanted that to happen like after this for him to find out. Not after this episode before this episode for that to have potentially been a thing but it turned out she was a Winchester. Gotcha. Okay. But obviously, that's not going to happen. After that. Bobby calls everybody back into his study living room area and insists on everyone getting a group picture. And he's making a joke about how he's going to need something to remember everybody sorry asses. But then Castiel very seriously is like Bobby's right. Tomorrow. We have the devil. This is our last night on Earth. And so by the time the camera goes off, everyone Looks somber as hell. Yeah. Picture. I mean, it was a cute picture, but you could just tell that everybody was kind of realizing like, okay, yeah, way to rally the troops Castiel

LA:

boost that morale.

Berly:

They pull into Carthage, Sam and Dean are in the Impala Jo Ellen and Cassiel are in I think it was like a Range Rover or something. Oh, it

LA:

was awesome.

Berly:

I kind of was surprised you didn't comment on the car.

Unknown:

What was the key it?

Berly:

I figure? Like, there's nobody around and they're driving down Main Street. So they all pull over. Sam and Dean are saying, Okay, we're gonna go to the sheriff's office. See if we can't find anybody there. Do some digging around about these missing people, whatever. So Joe and Ellen and Cass are like okay, we're going to look elsewhere. See if we can't just find some fucking people somewhere. I loved it. Ellen and Joe pull over. They get out of the car cast is still sitting in the backseat. And Joe knocks on the window and is like, hey, ever heard of a door handle? And CASAS teleported himself out of the car. He's just like, Of course I have like pans over that he's suddenly behind her. That was fun. It was then cast is looking around. He says this town isn't empty. It's full of Reapers. And it pans past casts and as the camera moves past cast yells body, we see that there are a lot of Reapers standing around say they were like 30 people need a 50 At least I mean, there are people standing on the rooftops of buildings standing in the streets, standing everywhere. I mean, they are everywhere and they're all just eerily just standing there staring in the same direction. not reacting, not moving. as creepy as hell. Hmm. So cast yells like, I'm gonna go check the shit out. I'm gonna see see why they're here. And I want to Joe asked him like, Why do you think they're here? And he said that they only gather like this, when there's like a disaster that's about to happen. He mentioned Pompeii. I don't remember the other disasters he mentioned, but Pompeii like a big deal. I mean, there's a lot of people that are about to die. He's walking around. None of the Reapers are reacting to him whatsoever. He looks up in a building and he sees a Reaper staring at him through a window. Well, that Reaper turns and starts to walk away. I loved this transition. So we see Castile from the street, watching the Reaper through the window, and then we transition to the window, where we see Cassiel in the street, and then it transitions to where Castile is suddenly, in the window where the Reaper had been standing. It was really cool. I loved the little teleportation things they did visually in this episode. I haven't seen those before. It was really cool. So now Casio is in the building where the Reaper was so he turns the same way the Reaper did and goes walking the only direction that the Reaper could have gone down this hallway. The opens this door and we see this bright light shine and we hear someone say, Hello, brother. Turns out that was Lucifer. And he has trapped Castile in a circle of holy fire Lucifers trying to convince Castile to join his side like both Fallen Angels brother. Like come on. If I die, who do you think they're gonna go after next is going to be you? And while this is happening Cassiel just because you do what's wrong with your vessel? What's going on there? And Lucifer says yeah, like Nick is wearing a bit thin. He can't contain me forever. He is not powerful enough to contain me forever because this isn't my true vessel. And Castile says you are not taking Sam Winchester. I won't let you Lucifer. It's just like, Oh, that's really sweet Castile. I have to say the holy fire lighting. I loved how that looked on Misha Collins face. Oh, yeah, the flame Yeah, it just made it made his eyes his features just so much more exaggerated. What do they call Chibby? Isn't that what they're called? Am I making that up? What

LA:

are you talking about?

Berly:

Chibby art, also known as Super deformation, or SD is a style of caricature, originating in Japan. So it's like anime manga and their eyes are super exaggerated. I thought it was making Misha Collins looked like a chimney it was making his eyes look so much bigger and darker. I liked it. Hmm. It was cute. But Castile does say whenever Lucifer is trying to tempt him still, that he will die before he helps Lucifer and Lucifer just kind of that same condescending vibe we got from the jarred pad of Lucky Lucifer a few episodes ago. He just kind of looks at him and just like, I suppose you will. Such a condescending little prick. Oh, yeah. After our season of us getting teased with the archangel, we finally got three like, bam, bam, bam, we got Raphael, Gabriel and Lucifer, all within the first half of this season. I love it. So in the meantime, while Lucifer is trying to tempt Castile into joining his side, or neutralize him, I guess is what he's really trying to do. Yeah. Ellen and Joe have met up with Sam and Dean, Sam and Diem. So there's nobody at the sheriff's station. Nobody's there. Elon and Joe fill them in that. Yeah. Well, Cass went after the Reapers. And they're like white, and they're like, yeah, sorry. He took off he went after the Reapers. We have no idea where he is what's going on. So while they're catching each other up on what the fuck has been happening, all of a sudden, good old faithful. Hard Damon Meg shows up and she's just like, hey, guys, long time no see. Sam and Dean are immediately like, oh, fuck you the second batch, right? It's been bothering us since the first season. We've had a nap. Yeah. And she's not alone. She has brought I think she said like eight hellhounds. I've for some reason I have the number eight in my head. She has a bunch of hellhounds with her. And she's just like, oh, Dean, it's your favorite. I brought these little babies with me so called back to end of season three when Dean got mauled by hellhounds. And she says that her daddy wants to see them now. So she's there to, you know, take them to Lucifer and they can make it easy or they can make it really hard. I bet you want them to make it really hard mag. Jean shoots one of the hellhounds which of course pisses them off, and they all turn to run Sam, Dean, Elena and Joe, as all the hellhounds chased them. Dean gets knocked down by one of the hellhounds Joe sees it turns around, starts going after it with her shotgun, which pisses off the other hellhounds and one of them attacks her from nowhere clause that her it wasn't as gory as when we saw Dean get mauled by the hellhounds. Back in season three. However, we did get our 24th Blood splooge of the supernatural series as the hell hounds clawed into Joe, we saw blood spray up onto her face and neck. Dean picked her up, got rid of the hellhound picked her up and they all ran to take shelter in the hardware store on Main Street immediately. Ellen is trying to attend to Joe, Sam and Dean are chaining close the doors salting all the doors because there's big bags of salt conveniently right there whenever they come in. So they're assaulting the door salting, when I would like giant rock salt to like, massive things of salt.

LA:

Well, like when I saw that they were going in a hardware store. I was like, perfect. There's gonna be so many things in there to Dr. Joe up, you know, seal whatever wounds she has. And then it's like, no, they didn't do any of that.

Berly:

Yeah, she said something about her guts being held in by an ace bandage. And I was like, really that's you didn't get some fire to characterize the wound? You

LA:

didn't I mean, staples, you could include it like, and like when they first showed her band aid. They showed her on the ground and it's like they're all just staring on we're like, nobody's putting pressure on that wound.

Berly:

Yeah, Joe was holding her own damn cuts in. I mean, come on. And then Ellen moved her hands to see the damage and we just saw blood gushing out. I mean, if they characterize it, if they've done this, if they've done that, I don't know that that would have saved her. But if I had been in that situation, I would have been trying anything. Oh, yeah. And I don't think that ace bandage would have been the number one thing I would have gone for only not. I boohoo cried in this episode. You did. Oh, man. It wasn't emotional episode. Let me get there. Let me get there. So at this point, like Elijah said, Sam and Dean are just standing there staring. Ellen is just like, oh, sweet baby girl like trying to take care of her daughter. They're frozen into not knowing what to do shot. Yeah, so what's Dean's immediate reaction? Bobby, I got it. I got a call daddy. They couldn't get a signal on their cell phones earlier. So he used he finds a CB radio. Thankfully, in the hardware store. I think it was a CB radio. I don't know. Yeah. Cuts to Bobby. He stayed home. He's in the living room. He had been trying to reach all of them on their cell phones. And so we see that he's not getting through, it's just due to the number. But then he hears the CB radio going off and he wheels over really quickly. He gets on there and it's Dean. Bobby, like, it's Joe. Not good. It's it's it's not good. I got choked up a little right. Well, he's panicking. He's like, I don't I don't think she's gonna make it and Bobby got him to switch into soldier mode. He was just like, what do we do next thing? What do we do next? I loved that scene. Just Bobby being his rock. You know, knowing understanding. I'm like tearing up right now. Just understanding the situation. And just trying to get Dean to focus like, focus on what you can do, right? Like that's, that's the only thing you can do in those situations. Focus on what you can do.

LA:

Give me you're gonna make it through. No,

Berly:

it's so sad. So the other thing Dean tells him is what's going on with the reapers and Bobby says the devils in the details how many Reapers are there? Allen comes around the corner and says from the way Castile looked the way his eyes were moving around I want to say it was least a dozen but probably more and Bobby goes for not good not good. He had been doing research Oh my drink blue stuff that went up my nose a little bit your math I know. So Bobby had been doing research on Carthage he was looking at the Holy Bible was like huge Bible by the massive and he did you see how many little how many posted flags he had in there, man Bobby's been busy re search. Yeah, he's been on top of it for this fucking apocalypse. i There are things that are said Add here and there that I wish they would emphasize just a little bit more like Bobby talking about how hunters are dying left and right. And all these apocalyptic ailments. Like, we don't think about what's happening to the characters we haven't met. Right? You know, Bobby's Hunter friends who are dying all around, apparently, and have been making him feel hopeless emphasizing a little bit more Bobby's doing a shit load of research to help these boys and try to help with the apocalypse stuff because they were so that Bible was flagged the fuckup

LA:

well, maybe he's also kind of overcompensating because he can't handle it. Right. You know, so he's like, overdoing it. He's like, I'm going to learn every fucking thing. Okay. Yeah.

Berly:

I mean, if they do a revival, I'm just saying there were so many more stories. I mean, we're only five seasons in. And I can think of gaps in the story where I would like to know what happened there. I would like to know what Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? I mean, when he slammed that book, I was just like, holy shit. Bobby's been busy. I meant

Unknown:

to be like, That is a huge Bible to you. There was just

Berly:

flags. Yeah. Like, you don't want to miss what's going to happen next. I don't spend a lot of time on it. But damn, so he had been researching Carthage and he looked into another book. And he said that based off of his research, there's this ritual, where you can raise death. And Dean at first is like, I mean, death has been here. I myself have died multiple times, like death has been here. Bobby's like, no, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the angel of death. The horsemen, they keep this guy locked up in a cage, like several didn't he say 600 feet below, John, like he's locked up in a cage to Lucifer was locked up in a cage death is locked up in a while locking them up. What a death do. It's a natural part of life. I mean, good is. In order for this ritual to be successful, it has to take place on a location where there was like, a bunch of death, not Pompeii. And it turns out that in Carthage, that is where William Jasper's farm is located. And here there was a brutal battle, where several soldiers fought and died in the Civil War, in something called the Battle of hellhole, and the ritual is going to take place at midnight here. So they have a place and a time now is exactly where they're going to be able to find the devil. Sam and Dean, go back to check on Joe and Ellen and are telling them, okay, we've got a plan. We know what we're doing next. We know where we're going, we know when we need to be there. So in the meantime, we got to get Joe out of here safely. So they're talking about a stretcher, they're talking about this talking about how they're going to get her out. And Joe just says, Hey, can we be realistic here. And this is when she said My guts are being held in place by an ace bandage, I can't feel my legs, which means I can't walk, walk, I can't do anything. I'm not gonna risk all of your lives trying to get me out of here. When there's hell hounds out there on our trail. They've got our sense, they're gonna come after us for life. I can't help fight anymore, but I can do something. And she looked at them and said, we've got everything we need. And they were just like, what? She listed off the ingredients. And they still were confused. And she was like, Sam, I'm talking about building a bomb. And I'm gonna I'm gonna set it off. Ellen at first is just like, No, no, you're not doing that baby girl. And Joe says, Mom, this is possibly the last chance you're gonna have to treat me like an adult. Let me make my own decision and support me in this. And so Ellen, of course, burst into tears. I burst into tears. And they agree like this is the plan. So Sam and Dean get to work, make it bombs. They make the trigger, and they hand it to Joe and then Ellen goes and squats next to Joe. And she's like, Okay, y'all, y'all get out of here. And like Joe at first is thinking her mom's just squatting down to say bye to her. But then she realizes her mom's not moving. And Ellen just makes a face and Joe realizes, I'm like tearing up again. Joe realizes, Mama's not going anywhere. And Ellen just like somebody you said, you can't move your legs like who's gonna let them in? Who's gonna go break the salt line? I'm staying here with you. I want to do this with you.

LA:

I feel like Joe Joe had to have been her life like her only daughter husband's gone like so. I mean, it doesn't surprise me she would have done that.

Berly:

Especially once the bar got blown out. Yeah, that was definitely her life. That's why she was out there hunting with her daughter was to make sure her daughter was safe. I mean, that was oh, just my heart and the performances. Oh, they did? Yeah. Oh, they did so well. A lot of towel and Samantha Ferris they both just ripped my fucking heart out in this episode. They did so good.

LA:

And Dean. Dean was really sweet when he went to say his goodbye to Joe to Oh yeah,

Berly:

he kissed her on the forehead. And then they just looked at each other and he went ahead and kissed her on the lips. That's what I was saying like Not after this episode I would hate it to find out after this episode by the way that was your sister like I met before this episode.

Unknown:

Really awkward episode.

Berly:

I want you to say that before this episode, I think that could have been a fun story. Explore Yeah, not after this episode of trees in honor because that goodbye would have been really awkward if that was the case. But if that's not the case, it was really sweet. And just Tinder and just kind of what could have been moment because they had amazing chemistry. And the fact that she had grown up now and she wasn't going to be just this little girl wanting to get the boys attention, like could hold her own against Dean that what could have been, what could have been, and understood the hunting life and all that stuff.

LA:

But yeah, but once again, just bringing them back, just a second column.

Berly:

In the meantime, we see Cassie Allegan and his jailer, so to speak, is Meg. You know, after she's sick to the hellhounds on them. She went to go do what daddy wanted and she is just giddy as can be. She's really excited. She's like, We're gonna win. We're gonna win clarity. I love that she called them Clarence. What was that? Every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings, Clarence. Okay, that smile was so big, so excited. And I felt bad for her because she genuinely believed they're gonna get to go to heaven. Lucifer is gonna win and will be in charge of heaven and everything. They're gonna get to go to heaven. Next, they aren't gonna have to go back to hell. Because as we know, Meg does not like hell. She does not want to be. Oh, Ruby didn't want to be there. Meg doesn't want to be there. They don't fucking like L Cassiel. is just like, Um, no, I heard a different theory from Crowley, which makes a lot more sense that after Lucifer takes care of the humans, you all are next, like you're just a means to an end. She says, you know, your God is absent and gone. But mine walks the earth. I mean, her

LA:

got her Gods looking like shit, right?

Unknown:

I think I asked you twice. I was like, why does he look like shit?

Berly:

That he finally explained like Nick's not holding up so well. All of us. Nick still had his wedding ring on. That I thought that was a nice touch. Why has Lucifer not like felt the need to keep the wedding ring on? Hmm, know what's going on there. Maybe he just hasn't even bathed as possible. Maybe he just really doesn't even care maybe like a little bling. Back at the hardware store, Sam and Dean have given Joe and Ellen everything they can and they've booked it, they've gone out onto the roof. And they're climbing over to another building and getting the hell out of dodge Island waits for them to have enough time to get some safe distance. And she goes and unchanged. The door breaks the salt line goes and sits down with Joe. And we see the doors like getting pushed open. And I counted three or four hellhounds came in the door. Yeah, but I think that they might have gotten all of them because Sam and Dean didn't have to deal with the rest of the episodes. She waited

LA:

like perfect timing. Like even if she didn't get them all in there. She got him

Berly:

because they were nearby looking through the window or something like she got they got all the hellhounds they were not a factor the rest of the episode. I loved loved the shot of the hellhound coming up from the hellhounds perspective that comes out up on Ellen. And we see that it like puffs like and it cuts to showing Ellen's face and we see her hair move. And she just her face goes from almost scared to just resolved. Oh yeah. Like in that moment. She was just like Fuck, yeah.

LA:

And I did like when she sat down with Joe she like put her arm around her and she was like always love you, baby. You're

Berly:

tearing up now? Yeah. Oh, it was so they killed it. This was this was a lot of tall and Samantha Ferriss episode. Like I'm crying. They did so good. They did so good. I also loved when Sam and Dean were leaving, and Ellen looked over her shoulder and said kick it in the ass. Manner manners. That was Kim manners, saying, which we learned that when we researched Kim manners, so that was a nice touch to like an ode to him. It was so good. Like, I fucking hate that they took them out. Oh, me too. But what a way to go.

Unknown:

Oh my god. Yeah.

Berly:

So Ellen is just like, What did she say? You can go back to hell, you son of a bitch.

Unknown:

You ugly bitch or something like that. Yeah.

Berly:

And she pushes the button and they blow that that place got blown up. I feel like so I know Sam and Dean were there when they set everything up. But after Sandy and left it showed Elon walking around like turning on more gas cans. I wonder if she did that. If she was like, let me I'm really gonna make sure

LA:

I think so because with the way they turned around when it blew they All

Berly:

right. Yeah, I think Ellen added to it. Yeah. I think she was like,

LA:

she's getting get these years. We're

Berly:

gonna. We're gonna go. We're gonna make sure we take out as much with us as we can. I feel like she added to it. Yeah, I just ah. Oh, and

LA:

then Joe actually so glad I didn't wear makeup today. Joe actually did die like right before too. Yeah. It just makes it all so much. Yeah. Like, like

Berly:

she she. She told her, like, Ellen told Joe, that she loves her. And like, Joe was trying to say I love you too. Back to her when she left when she died. Just Oh, God. Damn. You can go straight back to hell, you ugly bitches. Yeah. She said, Fuck, man. I hope they come back.

Unknown:

Right? We can get 17 back all the time they came back to

Berly:

Oh my God, I hope they come back. Okay. So Sam and Dean arrive at the farm. And there's a crowd of I want to say like 10 to 20 people standing around all dudes and Lucifer is diggin. And I was just like, why is he has all these minions standing around? Why is he doing all this? They're all just staring at him working? Why isn't he making them do it. But what we decided is that Lucifer had to perform the ritual himself, which included burying, which was apparently the whole rest of the town, women and children, women and children first. Yeah. So they get there and Sam kind of jumps out is like you wanted to see I know I need a tissue to

LA:

die. I did not expect this. Oh, just cry like teary eyed. In the episode I didn't cry

Berly:

was telling oh my god, I was bawling. I can't talk about it. Oh, I'm so sad. So Sam. Sam jumps out into the middle of the minions like, Hey, you wanted to see me.

LA:

And it was like, it was almost cute in a way like the bravado he came out with but like you can tell he's like terrified at the same time. And

Berly:

Lucifer just looks at him. It's like, oh, Sam, I would never hurt you. Slick. No, I would never hurt you. I just want to possess your body issue to start the apocalypse. No big deal. And then dean appears out of nowhere with the Colt while Lucifer is distracted, staring at this body that he wants so badly. It just like shoots Lucifer in the head. Just like bam. And Lucifer like falls down. And we both were like that was too easy. Yeah, I

LA:

was just like, what's, when's the other shoe gonna drop? Like what's happening here?

Berly:

And sure enough, Lucifer is just like, Oh, woah. That was rude. Team. He points out. You know, there's five things that the cult can't kill, and I just happen to be one of them.

LA:

Why do we not know that? I

Berly:

know. Why does Lucifer know there's exactly five things. What are the other four things? Exactly? I'm curious now. What are they? Yeah, so the devil. I'm guessing death. Oh, yeah. God, God. Yeah. Who knows? I don't know. Five things. I feel like I think he said five. I think he did too. Yeah. specifically said five. Yeah.

Unknown:

Dina, like, socket. Shot. Yeah, I know. I

Berly:

know. Of all the things to say to the devil right before you shoot him in the head. That's what you're gonna say.

LA:

He's not the most articulate, you know, he

Berly:

was talking to Crawley at the beginning. Oh my god.

Unknown:

Yeah, we call them look, what is it function functioning?

Berly:

functioning like you're functioning morons.

Unknown:

function. So good.

Berly:

Oh, man. blessum. So the devil is just like, I have a ritual to do here. Like he throws Dean Knox's ass out against a tree.

LA:

Unnecessary. Well, he

Berly:

did just shoot him in the head,

Unknown:

I guess. Okay, fair enough, you know.

Berly:

So Cassiel is in His holy fire, with Meg taunting him from the other side. And he remembered a little thing from your reel, but didn't even think about that. But yeah, you're totally right. Urial loosened up some pipes to drip some water in order to let Alastair out of his little double strap. And so Castiel is sitting there listening to Meg and he's just like, okay, how am I gonna get out of this? And he looks around. He's like pipes. Oh, you really? Yeah. He uses his angel power to unscrew some bolts. I thought the water was going to drip. That's what I did, too. I totally thought it was gonna be water. Yeah, wasn't water. He just loosened up a massive fucking pipe that fell and knocked Meg into the holy fire with him. I think Meg thought that some other stuff was Gonna go down?

LA:

I mean, how would that how would they I mean

Unknown:

if what she was thinking was gonna go down like,

Berly:

is there enough room? Oh, I would make room horizontally you would make some room. You wouldn't make the room make it happen. So she falls into Castillo's arms. And when she calm you inputted SAP because he tried to smoke her smile at her he put his hand on her forehead and nothing happened and she was like, Haha, you're it's embarrassing. You're cut off from the home office. Yeah. Like I said, she called them infinite. I was like, Oh, yeah. And he was just like, Yeah, okay, I might not be able to smite you, but I can still do this. And just the way she laid her head. I totally think she thought she was about to get like to make out with him or so. Oh, yeah.

LA:

Well, I mean, she was just the way she was talking to him and like in his face, and like, it just seemed like that's what she was. She was like, alright,

Berly:

that's what mags been after since season one. Somebody needs to D Meg down. She needs it. Now I feel for I Do I Do I get it. But no, he does not kiss her.

LA:

That was a little dramatic. Okay. Oh my god. She goes, she goes from like, All right, what's shits about to go down right here, okay, and then throws her in the fucking fire.

Berly:

throws her down, like stepped over cups. Or he walked over her because she was what was she was what was blocking the holy fire. So you just like steps in the middle of her back to like, walk over her to get out of the holy port mag.

Unknown:

I feel for her even more now.

Berly:

So Cassiel paces out. And of course, as soon as he's out of the holy fire, he transports to Dean and Sam boys and gets them the fuck out of there. Right before Lucifer continues his ritual. Now something that did happen during the ritual before Sam and Dean got buzzed out of there was he said something I don't even know what he said, Oh, he was like, I sacrificed myself I give myself over blah, blah, blah. Repeat after me. And so all the people that were standing around said the same thing. And then their heads like started short circuiting. Like, it was like, these bursts and it looked like what it looks like when they use the knife, or, you know, like the sparks, but it was just quit internal. Yeah. But, you know,

LA:

I feel like I like I'm so bad about that. When I'm doing recaps. I'm always using my hands and I'm like, why am I doing that we

Berly:

do we need to start videotaping ourselves. Because I when I'm editing sometimes, we're reacting to something the other person's doing not something we're saying well, and half the time I'm like looking.

LA:

Well, I'm looking at my notes and I'm doing like these gestures literally just for myself, because I'm not even looking at them to see sometimes that you're paying attention

Berly:

to me telling a story, man, we're telling a story. Yeah. Their heads are like short circuiting. And Sam is just like looking horrified. And Lucifer looks over at him and goes what? They're just demons. So Crowley is right. Yeah. Confirmation Crowley is right. Lucifer does not give a shit about the demons. He is using them as a means to an end. And then Castile comes and sweeps them out. We don't get to see him. But we see from his perspective, as something comes out of the ground. I guess I shouldn't say he, they we see some for their perspective as they come out of the ground. And Lucifer goes Oh, hello. Yeah. It cuts away. I thought we were gonna get to meet him. Yeah, I guess not this episode. Back at Bobby's place. Castillo's dropped off Sam and Dean with daddy. And they're listening to the television, radio, all this stuff. And they are talking about Carthage essentially. Staggering loss of life. Bad news. omens bad news. Oh, and they're just sitting there, devastated. Like, they aren't talking. They're just standing there. And Bobby takes the picture from when they from what they take in the night before and tosses it in the fire.

LA:

In a way I was like, Oh, my God, don't. Don't get rid of that. It's like the last little thing. You have them the last time you're with them, but at the same time, like I get it, but it was just

Berly:

it's so sad because Ellen and Joe I mean, Sam and Dean lived so I wouldn't I don't want to say the Ellen and Joe died for nothing. But Ellen and Joe sacrificed themselves because Sam and Dean were gonna get a shout at the devil. And they blew it. And it did nothing. Yeah,

LA:

I mean, they didn't blew it. They did what they did what

Berly:

they thought, but it didn't work. Like they didn't know the Colts not gonna kill Lucifer. What did they die for? Well,

LA:

hopefully in the end, they get him. I don't know. But

Berly:

yeah, that was the end of the episode. It was really good. It was really good. Well, I cried during the episode, and I cried talking about the episode. You teared up a little But during the episode cried while we were talking about the episode, it was written by Ben Edlund and directed by kitchen meet cute himself. Mr. Phil's secretion All right, Gore. glorious thing was obviously Joe. And it was done well. Yeah.

LA:

I do you want to monitor a little time so that like she didn't have that much blood loss, you know, because

Berly:

it was so fast whenever they whenever they showed like let us see how bad it is it was gushing out. I do wonder how they did that? Because I feel like that was practical. Like it was so quick. It was such a quick shot, but there was a lot of blood coming out in that quick shot. I'm curious how they did that. It was it was done. Well. I can't think of anything else gory, particularly. I mean, I guess Lucifer getting his head shot. I can't think of any I mean he just he looked kind of he looks gross the whole time. He had like lesions Yeah, went on. Skin was coming off. Yeah. Get it together Lucifer. He went from mismatched whites to just like not cleaning and taking care of his vessel like what is what is going on with you and I thought your case to be hot. Yeah. What did you adore about this episode?

LA:

I did it. Dean getting tripped up when Crowley called them functioning morons. More than anything just Joe. I think Joe and Ellen's relationship and just the mother daughter bond and then going together it was just

Berly:

Yeah, Joe and Alan. Yeah, Joan Allen definitely adored that. hated that they are gone. Yes. Yes. Hope they come back. They definitely made this episode. Oh my god. Yeah, that's what made this episode. I also adored Crowley's introduction. Oh, yes, of course. Yeah. Rallies introduction. At the beginning of the episode, I thought we were gonna get more of him. But for all we got in this episode, it was memorable. I loved the way he grabbed that man's head. Oh, the smirk the way he played the Winchesters to come get the call from him. Because he has other demons. They can't think that he's trying to help them. Right. You know, just all of that. It was very short. And yet, Davis a very good idea of who he is. Yeah, that's a that's a business man. He is He is there to make some deals. He has his own best interests at heart. And he's going to do what he needs to do to take care of him. Like I know that about him already. Just from this introduction. I'm excited to see more of him.

LA:

What about the lore? Well, this is a Screen Rant article on the real life influence behind Crowley. So names are very important within the realm of supernatural with many characters christened after figures from mythology or legend. The Winchesters themselves were named after both the famous gun and a haunted house attraction, while angels such as Michael Castile and Gabriel, all derived partially or wholly from genuine biblical figures. The same goes for supernatural as demonic contingent. Villains, such as Lilith and Azazel all take their titles from established demons or evil spirits in wider lore. While all of the above are appropriately ancient Crowley's name has much more recent inspiration. Supernaturals Crowley shared similarities with the Neil Gaiman character have the same name, but according to Mark Shepard himself, both characters trace back to a real life figure known as Aleister Crowley. The real life Crowley was born in 1875, England but achieved notoriety in the early part of the 20th century before his eventual death in 1945. raised within a strict Christian upbringing, Crowley rejected his parents beliefs at an early age and indulged in activities that were frowned upon during his day, although perhaps wouldn't raise an eyebrow in 2020. And the 20. What do we call these two?

Berly:

The 2020s? Is that what this is this one, I just want to get a right I don't know. Like, shouldn't we just be calling it the 20s? Yes. Okay. Well, that's

LA:

what I want. Yeah.

Berly:

We just feel weird calling it the 20s. Because we grew up in the 19 1900s. And so to us, the 20s was the 1920s. Right? But think about it like 50 years from now when they say the 20s people are going to be thinking about now. Oh, my God, like,

LA:

Oh, no. All right. Well as an adult Crowley began dabbling in occult literature while exploring free thinking philosophies that were considered taboo by his contemporaries. This interest rapidly developed as Crowley now the self proclaimed beast, studied of magic, published his own occult works and frequented secret societies such as Golden Dawn call themselves

Berly:

based guess Oh, base beast.

LA:

What's the movie? What's the trilogy with unbreakable? Split? Doesn't they call him the beast?

Berly:

Oh, James McAvoy. Yeah Oh yeah, I was thinking about what we do in the shadows. Wasn't the Jemaine Clement character known as like they would call he called his ex girlfriend the beast did he? Was it it? I

Unknown:

don't remember that.

Berly:

I'll have to Google it.

LA:

I need to watch the movie again. I watched the show. I ordered it. We should watch it.

Berly:

He called her the beast. His ex girlfriend was the base. Oh

LA:

my god. I love that movie. It's so good. Oh, the legend of Aleister Crowley became more wits widespread, widespread after he founded his own religion. De Lima Elma Philomela fell. What was it the Lima Lima? Yeah, the Lima Yeah. His own religion, the Lima, which instructed followers to live as they want it. As Crowley's influence spread in Britain and across the world, the mainstream, were quick to decry him as an evil follower of Satan, no doubt enhancing his reputation and eventual legacy. Although never confirmed, Crowley was routinely linked to the secret services and this only bolstered his shadowy reputation as a mystical but influential figure. Much of what Crowley did in his lifetime would likely be considered kooky or self destructive by today's standards. But his influence on pop culture arguably overreaches those achievements as Gothic and magic based subcultures with rapidly become mainstream. Still, Aleister Crowley was involved in several genuinely concerning scandals. Crowley open openly supported Germany during World War One, although later claimed he was operating undercover, and a dedicated follower died while living at the controversial cut down below my controversial feel of the limite Abbey and Sicily. But Crowley's own role in this tragedy remains unclear. Aleister Crowley was painted as a sinister evil cultist, whereas many modern scholars see him as a bisexual drug user who wrapped radically progressive political concepts in the guise of ritual and occult gatherings. In both cases, the reputation is more foreboding than the man. Suppose it embodiments of evil who, despite some undoubtedly wicked deeds, are something quite different in reality. In more recent years, Crowley has become a byword for the paranormal, something perpetrated by the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, a man with his own share of satanic accusations, who wrote a song about the infamous magician for his debut solo album. In truth, the only other worldly element, Aziz Mr. Crowley is the guitar solo. Nevertheless, Crowley's reputation helps bring the same mysticism and enigma to his supernatural counterpart.

Berly:

I wonder if this was also the inspiration for Alistair's name? Because whenever I tried to Google Alastair, there was nothing. Oh, really? This is Alistair Crowley quote to close it out with our daddy and Dean, the beginning of the episode. And

LA:

Dean says, oh, excuse me for asking but aren't you kind of signing your own death warrant? I mean, what happens to you if we go up against the devil and lose?

Berly:

I Crowley says number one, he's going to wipe us all out anyway, too. After you leave here. I go on an extended vacation to all points nowhere. And three. How about you don't miss Okay, morons. Cheers. Thank you for listening to denim wrapped nightmares.
